I was listening to Larry Burkett yesterday and a guy called in with a question. He said that he has been talking to some members in he church about the importance of tithing and that his Pastor had taken him to task. His Pastor told him he was preaching leagalism and that we are no longer under the Old Testament law. He wanted to know Larry's thoughts on it.

Larry acknowledged that we are under grace and not under the Old Testament law, but he followed up by asking if the Pastor would say that the ten commandments are no longer binding. The caller responded that the Pastor said they are not binding on New Testament Christians. Larry responded that he thinks hte Pastor is making a distinction that is not supported by scripture. He said that some of the law had ritual aspects which are no longer required, but that God doesn't change and therefore He requires the same of us now as he did of the Children of Israel. He said the tithe (a tenth) is the minimum that God ever asked of anyone and that the Children of Israel (orthodox Jews) actually gave 23 1/3 percent. He went on to say that our tithe can be less than a tenth or more than a tent--because God is not an accountant. He quoted two familiar verses to support his position, Malachi 3:10, and Proverbs 3 (I think) where it says to honr the Lord with first fruit of all of our increase. He closed by saying that he thought the Pastor was wrong by trying to make a distinction between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Me thinks that Larry would make a good SDA. He is good at doublespeak. Seems like he contradicted himself about three different times in this one conversation. What do you think?

Okay, maybe "doublespeak" is a little harsh, but he certainly is a master at convoluted logic and theoogy by conjecture (in spite of the written Word).

I agree Doug. Doublespeak isn't too harsh.

Burkett uses the Law to support his work in helping Christians reach financial stability.

Apparently he has not been able to distinguish between good financial practices and poor theological positions.

Yep, send him to Sabbath School.

I am always a little amused by those who, at the same time, say that ìonly the ceremonial aspectsî of the law were nailed to the Cross, and say that the tithe is ìstill in force.î

Well, what could be more ìceremonialî than the tithe? It was specifically instituted to maintain the Levitical priesthood so that the ceremonies and sacrifices could be reliably occur.

If you think that only the Levitical system is abolished, you have, by definition, abolished the tithe.

Along with ìdoublespeakî Iíll suggest ìhalfthink.î

Christian giving and support is an entirely different concept.

OK, just as soon as I start farming or growing produce for a living, I'll look around for the nearest Tribe of Levi headquarters... ;>)

Nope . . . no turtle doves, but I can find a couple of psychotic robins, a suicidal sparrow, or a whole gang of marauding Canadian geese . . . But then, youíd have to eat them.

(P.S. Iím not kidding about these birds where I live. They are very strange!!)
