There is a quote from Ellen White that every time I come accross it I can't believe she could say this and get away with it.

"In ancient times God spoke through the mouths of prophets and apostles. In these days he speaks to them by the Testimonies of his Spirit". Test. vol. 4 pg 148, vol. 5 pg. 661.
Compare to the Bible:
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by his SON, whom he has appointed heir of all things.
Hebrews 1:1,2

"All who believe that the lord has spoken through Sister White, and has given her a message, will be safe from the many delusions that will come in these last days".3SM84.

I think Ellen White was a little mixed up in whom we should follow and put our trust in.

Cas, Thanks for sharing that. I was totally unaware of those EGW quotes. They're egregious! I'm coming to believe more and more that she had an extremely inadequate idea of who Jesus Christ was and is. I still do not want to judge her too harshly, though, because her understanding did grow a great deal during her lifetime. --Jude

Now here's a quote for you! It could be headlined:

WIGS CAUSE "RECKLESSNESS IN MORALS," BALDNESS, "HOPELESS INSANITY," SAYS PROPHET ELLEN G. WHITE

ìThe artificial hair [wigs] and pads covering the base of the brain, heat and excite the spinal nerves centering in the brain. The head should ever be kept cool. The heat caused by these artificials induces the blood to the brain. The action of the blood upon the lower or animal organs of the brain, causes unnatural activity, tends to recklessness in morals, and the mind and heart is in danger of being corrupted. As the animal organs are excited and strengthened, the morals are enfeebled. The moral and intellectual powers of the mind become servants to the animal.

ìIn consequence of the brain being congested its nerves lose their healthy action, and take on morbid conditions, making it almost impossible to arouse the moral sensibilities. Such lose their power to discern sacred things. The unnatural heat caused by these artificial deformities about the head, induces the blood to the brain, producing congestion, and causing the natural hair to fall off, producing baldness. Thus the natural is sacrificed to the artificial.

ìMany have lost their reason, and become hopelessly insane, by following this deforming fashion.î

Ellen G. White, ìWords to Christian Mothers on the Subject of Life, Health, and Happiness ñ No. 2î [pamphlet], p. 121. Quoted by Ronald L. Numbers in Prophetess of Health: A Study of Ellen G. White [book] (New York: Harper & Row, 1976), p.148.

Comments, anyone?

You bet I have a comment. Ellen White claimed that every single vision of hers and all her messages came straight from God. You said:

"I still do not want to judge her too harshly, though, because her understanding did grow a great deal during her lifetime."

So, if much of what she had to say was bogus, unscientific, egocentric, and contrary to scripture, then tell me, was God also growing?

Sorry to come across as harsh, but I've heard this excuse till it makes me sick. It's a cop-out for her every mistake. If I say stupid things & give God the "credit," shall I be excused years from now when I "mature"?

I hope my message didn't come across as harsh to you specifically, but we must all be careful not to fall into the trap of parroting the typical SDA excuses for Ellen White's lies.

You're doing a great job, keep it up.

Lynn, thanks. No, I didn't think you were too harsh. I do think, though, that if we want to "win the Jews" -- i.e., "win the Adventists" -- we have to behave toward them as Paul did:

"Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offence either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved." 1 Corinthians 10:31-33, NAS.

Grace and peace,

Jude
