So, I was scooting around the web looking for articles on the stone tables, book of the Covenant, Ten Commandments, and related topics. I was curious what Jewish Scholars considered to be the contents of the words on the tables of stone.

I found this link by Chaim Brovender.

I do not know if this is a widespread view, but notice these words:

quote:

ì . . . This refers to the six hundred thirteen mitzvot which are included in the Ten commandments." In some manner, the Ten Commandments include the entire Torah and that is what Hashem is going to explain to Moshe.

It looks to me that this person is saying that more than just the traditional short list of Exodus 20 is on the stones.

Interesting! He mentions 613 commandments (mitzvot) and includes them in the Ten Commandments (dabar).
There is more about what was in the ìbook besideî and other interesting things.
I wonder if this is the majority theological view in Judaism. What do you think?

Jerry, I have heard the same general idea. Jews believe that all 613 laws in the Torah ARE God's commandments. The ten are not separated out as God's eternal, special, central law. In fact, Jews believe that when Messiah comes, the law (all of it including the 10) will have a different function.

I think what you have found is exactly what believing Jews believe. The Ten are inseparable from the 613--or vice versa!

OK, but I wonder if this scholar also means that the ì613î are actually on the stone tables and are the contents of the words of the Covenant. It looks that way to me, as this article reads. If that is what this scholar (and the other quoted scholar) means, then it would follow that, at the very least the words on the tables include the words from Exodus 20 through 31.

In fact, I was beginning to suspect this as I have been studying the Old Covenant.

Of course, if this is a well founded Scriptural view, this would flat out destroy the olí ìSee, the Ten Commandments were on stone signifying permanence but the ëceremonial' stuff was in the book beside the ark on paper, so that means we were supposed to drop them but keep the ëBig Ten.íî

Hmm. Interesting.

Jerry, that IS interesting! I haven't studied this question, but the Jews' understanding certainly lends credence to the idea. How fascinating!
