Hello everyone,

Here is something that I discovered while reading a commentary on the book of Romans.

First, let's start with the verses, how they appear in my NIV version.

1. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

2. because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

3. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,

4. in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit."

This all looks good and sounds good but here is my finding in the 4th verse. It should read as such:

4. "in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us."

This part~~~~>"who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit." was added.

It is not in the original manuscript.

Any comments as to who might have added it or why? I would like to know.

God Bless,
Denise

Okay, did I read this right? I'm putting up what I read so all can read and correct me or concur. I don't know what verse this David is referring to now...

David Guzik Study Guide
for Romans Chapter 8

Romans 8 - Life In the Spirit

A. Life in the Spirit contrasted with life in the flesh

1. (1) No condemnation

a. The simple declaration of no condemnation comes to those who are in Christ Jesus; since Christ is not condemned by the Father, those who are in Him are not, will not, and cannot be condemned

i. The chapter begins with no condemnation; it ends with no separation, and in between there is no defeat

b. This confidence and peace comes after the confusion and conflict that marked chapter 7; now Paul is looking to Jesus and is finding his standing in Him

i. But this chapter is more than just the answer to chapter 7; it ties together thoughts from the very beginning of the book

c. The words who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit are not found in the earliest manuscripts and do not agree with the flow of Paul's context here

i. There were probably added by a copyist who either through a mistake or through a desire to "help" Paul here imported the words from verse 4
ii. While it is true that those who are in Christ should not and do not consistently walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit, this is not a condition for their status of "no condemnation," rather their position in Christ is the reason

Okay, here is another one to review..I'm seeing that it may not be pertaining to verse 4 so much as it may be coming from verse 4. Yes? No?
Help me see or understand this better please.

THE EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE
ROMANS
Commentary by DAVID BROWN
CHAPTER 8

Rom 8:1-39 . CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE ARGUMENT--THE GLORIOUS COMPLETENESS OF THEM THAT ARE IN CHRIST JESUS.

In this surpassing chapter the several streams of the preceding argument meet and flow in one "river of the water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb," until it seems to lose itself in the ocean of a blissful eternity.

FIRST: The Sanctification of Believers ( Rom 8:1-13 ).

1. There is therefore now, &c.--referring to the immediately preceding context [OLSHAUSEN, PHILIPPI, MEYER, ALFORD, &c.]. The subject with which the seventh chapter concludes is still under consideration. The scope of Rom 8:1-4 is to show how "the law of sin and death" is deprived of its power to bring believers again into bondage, and how the holy law of God receives in them the homage of a living obedience [CALVIN, FRASER, PHILIPPI, MEYER, ALFORD, &c.].
no condemnation: to them which are in Christ Jesus--As Christ, who "knew no sin," was, to all legal effects, "made sin for us," so are we, who believe in Him, to all legal effects, "made the righteousness of God in Him" ( 2Cr 5:21 ); and thus, one with Him in the divine reckoning. there is to such "NO CONDEMNATION." (Compare Jhn 3:18 5:24 Rom 5:18, 19 ). But this is no mere legal arrangement: it is a union in life; believers, through the indwelling of Christ's Spirit in them, having one life with Him, as truly as the head and the members of the same body have one life.
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit--The evidence of manuscripts seems to show that this clause formed no part of the original text of this verse, but that the first part of it was early introduced, and the second later, from Rom 8:4 , probably as an explanatory comment, and to make the transition to Rom 8:2 easier.

Here is Chuck Smith's commentary in part:

CHAPTER 8: LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

v. 1 Because in our hearts we desire to serve God, He doesn't condemn us when we fail.

v. 2 The law of sin and death is still in effect, but the new law of life in Christ Jesus supersedes the old law.

v. 3-4 The law of sin and death couldn't make us righteous, but the new law of life is fulfilled in us by Christ (not by us) as we walk after the Spirit. Through Him we're accounted righteous.

God Bless you all for your patience,
Denise

Okay, so I answered my own question. It is NOT verse 4 that has been added to.

But don't you all find this interesting anyway?? :)

God Bless everyone and forgive me my mistakes,
