Welcome Magpie,
It is good to have you here. You say you have relatives who have become SDA? Who? When?
We really would like to know more about you and your relatives.
God is awesome.

Magpie,

Welcome!

Generally, when promoting their doctrinal heresies, Seventh-day Adventists like to use the King James Version. This is because the KJV is mistranslated in many key "proof-texts" that they use to defend their false teachings. The newer Bible translations are based on more manuscript evidence--some not yet discovered or available when the KJV was first published in 1611.

Also, many Adventists dismiss certain words and passages in modern translations because the members of the Bible translation team were comprised largely Evangelical scholars. Thus, they feel these translators are biased and unreliable in many key areas. Indeed, the old adage that "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still" is akin to the Adventist deception of being "settled in the truth."

Sorry for the delayed reply, but yes, I'm using the NIV version for the Isaiah scripture. Dennis is right about Adventist using the KJV. That's the one I was issued when I joined them in 1985. They even had a special section printed in the back of the book that took the scriptures out of context and applied them to a question & answer survey regarding all their popular topics from Sabbath keeping to state of the dead.

Short version of my story is this. Son met girl, fell in love and married, bothe were backsliden at the time. She from SDA and he from Full Gospel. When they decided to start going back to church, she got him to try hers, he went to do bible studies with the pastor, and well you know the rest.

Son said it just all sounded so right when the pastor explained it. However, he did a study on EGW and discovered that she took about half of her material from other authors so she is no linger "one of his favorite authors".

I love this board and Im learning a lot!!

Thanks, Magpie! So, you and your husband are both on the road that leads out of Adventism?

Praise God for the way He brings us truth at the just the right time!

Husband?? Well no, I don't have one of those anymore. It's my SON that married into SDA and he is seeing the error now, but his wife is still entrenched and will not listen to anything else. She is afraid of she leaves "the church" she will be deceived and wind up going to hell.

So I need things to show her to get the scales to fall from her eyes.

Hi Magpie,
Your son and daughter-in-law's situation sounds very similar to mine. I was the non-SDA who fell in love with an SDA, and was baptized into the SDA church in order for us to marry.

I too wish there were things I could do to get the scales off my husband's eyes. The more I try to show him things I've read about the errors of the church, the more defensive he gets.

I end up biting my tongue a lot and praying a lot!!

Oh, I'm sorry, Magpie! My mistake!

Madelia's solution, actually, is probably the most powerful unless your daughter-in-law has a desire to see the problems. I'm sure your son has a good share of suffering over this division between them--and for that matter, so does your daughter-in-law.

With prayers for them and for her willingness to discover truth,

Colleen

Thanks for affirming my "solution". It's hard to not lash out and say something when I have to listen to those SDA arguments.

BTW, Susan2, my husband had 3ABN on last night and Doug Batchelor (or Botchelor as someone has posted!) was on. Your term "annoying fiction" just kept running through my head! :-)

Madelia,

The only thing I have ever found that works sometimes, is to say: I can see where that makes sense to you, but my problem is, if that is true, and I'm not saying you're wrong, but what about this scripture that says this!

It works sometimes. However, I always pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show them.

I have used this method on Mormons, and Jehovahs witnesses, and they eventually came out of the error.

But I have to tell you, the SDA are a hard nut to crack. However I plan on keeping on until I see them out of that mess!

Please pray for them.

Magpie
