Leigh,
That is a "whoa" moment for me. I had always heard it as a story of the Israelites getting manna and when I read it to day I realize that Jesus is the bread of life. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I was surprised sto receive an email from Mr. Jones of V.O.P. on the email I wrote to him, (above) ..

Thom:

Thanks for your letter. And praise God you now have a saving relationship with Jesus. I too grew up amid the old legalism of the church. I didn't find Jesus until I was 30 & on a business trip to New York City and also desperate to quit smoking cigarettes.

My life goal now is to help the church focus on Jesus Who is my life! I hope we can meet one of these days in His kingdom and swap stories of how wonderfully He led in our lives.

Blessings on you,

Mike

I hope he is seriously making an effort, as he describes. If he is, I pray for success in his efforts.

I too am

In His Service

Thomas

Thomas,
His letter sounds sincere and Christ-centered...perhaps he should look closer into the New Covenant's fulfillment in Jesus and how that reality just doesn't mesh with Adventisms' core doctrines.

I don't see how one can (honestly) believe in the sufficiency of Christ alone and yet remain under the Adventist doctrinal structure (remnant theology, EGW=true prophet, 1844, clean/unclean, tithing, Saturday/Sabbath as a sign/testing truth).

There are just too many Jesus "plus" doctrines in Adventism to say they want to just focus on Jesus. It really can't be done with the doctrinal statements the church is founded on!

Unless there is a complete change and repentance of these doctrines, those either coming back to the SDA church or joining it for the first time will still be living under a shadow...not the glory of the unveiled Christ.

grace always,
cindy

Cindy, I completely agree with you. Thomas, your letter was so clear and powerful; I pray God will use it to cause Mike Jones to think deeply into his beliefs and assumptions.

Cindy you said, "There are just too many Jesus "plus" doctrines in Adventism to say they want to just focus on Jesus.". That is SO true!

SDA's offer a "new improved Jesus" but all they are really marketing is some mythical power to enable us to magically begin keeping the law. They are not marketing Jesus as the personal, individual payment to God for our breaking of the law. When a person discovers that they still cannot keep the law after becoming SDA, desperation and despair (and deception about their own true condition) eventually sets in. Since it is not the true gospel, it is just jumping from the frying pan into the fire. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" (THE LAW).

Won't get fooled again...

ROTFLOL! What a great quote. I don't usually make the connection between classic rock and the Gospel, but that was great. Thanks for brightening my evening.

Cindy,
Wow you expressed it perfectly. I absolutely agree with you. Thomas, I agree with what Colleen said above. Your letter was clear and powerful; Hopefully Mike Jones will come the conclusion he will have to make the difficult decision to act on his convictions. There's been too many fine folks in the SDA denom that have tried to change the church from within. They eventually had to make the break, just as Mike Jones will have to do, if he truly believes in the "unveiled Christ" that Cindy mentioned.

Freeatlast, great quote! I like your comments about the marketing of a "new improved Jesus".

Leigh,
I just got home from a week away. Thanks for resharing your manna story. I have yet to unpack my Bible and journal so I have written it out for referencing John 6:32-36 by the Exodus story.

To all my dear FAF friends,
I can see you have all been busy while I was away. I can hardly wait to read all your thoughts!!

What a nice letter. I had to throw out the bathwater(EGW) but not the baby. It took a long time to finally discover basic truths: Jesus is the only means for salvation, not grace plus works(eg. sabbath keeping, dietary laws, egw, etc). It was wonderful to discover that the sabbath command pointed towards a permanent rest in Jesus Christ which is continuous, not just for one day out of seven. I even did not understand the Old vs. New covenants and am still learning.

I just noticed Greg Taylor's book is now available on LAM. It is about discovering the New Covenant. I have only just ordered it, but I know his letter to friends was certainly moving. I can't wait to read his book!
