Speakeasy, This is the new thread I promised to start where we could discuss the great truths that God has revealed, through scripture, about His Being.

The first great truth that I would like to deal with is the truth of how many "gods" there are. I strongly believe that God has revealed to us that there is only ONE true God. There are not many gods. There are not three gods. There are not greater and lesser gods. There is *ONLY* **ONE** God, and that one God is YHWH. I have listed below a few of the texts that teach this great truth that God has revealed. Please note that all instances of "LORD" in all quotes are an English representation of the tetragramatton "YHWH" from the Hebrew.

"To you it was shown that you might know that the LORD (YHWH), He is God; there is no other besides, Him.

Deut 4:35 (NASB)

"Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD (YHWH), He is God in heaven above, and on the earth below,; there is no other.

Deut 4:39 (NASB)

'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

Deut 32:39 (NASB)

"For who is God, besides the LORD? And who is a rock, besides our God?

2 Sam 22:32 (NASB)

"Now, O LORD (YHWH) our God, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, LORD (YWHW), are God."
Isaiah 37:20 (NASB)

"You are My witnesses," declares the LORD (YHWH), "And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.

Isaiah 43:10 (NASB)

6 "Thus says the LORD (YHWH), the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD (YHWH) of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides, Me.
7 'Who is like Me? Let him proclaim and declare it; Yes, let him recount it to Me in order, From the time that I established the ancient nation. And let them declare to them the things that are coming And the events that are going to take place.
8 'Do not tremble and do not be afraid; Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it? And you are My witnesses. Is there any God besides, Me, Or is there any other Rock? I know of none.' "
Isaiah 44:6-8 (NASB)

"I am the LORD (YHWH), and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me;

Isaiah 45:5 (NASB)

14 Thus says the LORD (YHWH), "The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush And the Sabeans, men of stature, Will come over to you and will be yours; They will walk behind you, they will come over in chains And will bow down to you; They will make supplication to you: 'Surely, God is with you, and there is none else, No other God.' "

Isaiah 45:14 (NASB)

21 "Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD (YHWH)? And there is no other God besides, Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.
22 "Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.

Isaiah 45:21-22 (NASB)

"Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me,

Isaiah 46:9 (NASB)

44 "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

John 5:44 (NASB)

30 since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.

Romans 3:30 (NASB)

27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.
Romans 16:27 (NASB)

4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one.
5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,
6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

1 Cor 8:4-6 (NASB)

20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.

Gal 3:20 (NASB)

6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Eph 4:6 (NASB)

17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

1 Tim 1:17 (NASB)

5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Tim 2:5 (NASB)

19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

James 2:19 (NASB)

25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
Jude 1:25 (NASB)

Speakeasy, before moving on to any other points of discussion, I would like to establish if you and I agree or disagree, based on the scripture given, that there is only one God, that one God is the LORD (YHWH), and there is no other.

Speakeasy, do you agree or disagree that according to these scripture, there is only one God (YHWH)?

Clarification/Correction: This line should read-

Please note that the instances of "LORD" (in all caps) are English representations of the Hebrew Tetragramatton "YHWH" as found in the extant manuscripts.

Well, I had truly hoped that this thread would be an interesting interactive discussion, but that may not happen at this time. Since I started the thread, I guess I'll finish it. Over the course of the next few evenings I'll post on more of the cardinal truths God has revealed to us about His being.

So far we have learned from scripture that:

1) There is only one God, that one God is YWHW, and there are no other gods.

The next truth I would like to present from scripture is that:

2) The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are eternally personally distinct.

That is to say that, God the Father is not Jesus, and Jesus is not God the Father, nor are either one the Holy Spirit. God is not sometimes the Father, at other times the Son, and at still other times the Spirit. God the Father is always the Father, The Son is always the Son, and the Spirit is always the spirit. There are eternal subject/object distinctions between the Father, Son, and Spirit. There are eternal relationships between between the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.

The fact that the Father is not the Son and the Son is not the Father may seem self evident to most people on this board, but there are a few groups who erroneously teach just the opposite. They falsely teach that God goes into different modes where at certain times He is in the Father mode while at other times He is the Son mode, while at other times He is in the Spirit mode. The way you will most often hear this heresy today is that God was the Father before the incarnation, but during the incarnation He was the Son, and after the acension He became the Spirit.

So let's see what scripture has to say about all this. Do to the many scriptures that deal with these personal distinctions, I'll have to spread this out over a few evenings.

I'll start first by listing some scripture that reference the Father and Son as two persons:

7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 1:7 (NASB)

3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 1:3 (NASB)

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Cor 1:2 (NASB)

3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
Gal 1:3-4 (NASB)

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eph 1:2 (NASB)

23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eph 6:23 (NASB)

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Phil 1:2 (NASB)

1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.
1 Thess 1:1 (NASB)

1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Thess 1:1 (NASB)

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Tim 1:1-2 (NASB)

2 To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Tim 1:2 (NASB)

4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Titus 1:4 (NASB)

3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philem 1:3 (NASB)

James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings.

James 1:1 (NASB)

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

2 Peter 1:2 (NASB)

3 Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

2 John 1:3 (NASB)

Next, please note that in making an argument for the authenticity of who He was and of His ministry, Jesus appealed to the OT madate for two or three witnesses to testify to truth (see Num. 35:30, Deut. 17:6, & Deut 19:15). Christ's argument in the following versus is clearly dependent on Jesus and the Father being *two* distinct witnesses:

31 "If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.
32 "There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
John 5:31-32 (NASB)

16 "But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17 "Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.
18 "I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me."

John 8:16-18 (NASB)

Also note the relationships between the Father and the Son. For instance, the Father sent the Son:

17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

John 3:17 (NASB)

4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,

Gal 4:4 (NASB)

10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 4:10 (NASB)

18 "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world
John 17:18 (NASB)

21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

John 20:21 (NASB)

The Father and the Son love each other:

35 "The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.

John 3:35 (NASB)

31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.
John 14:31 (NASB)

23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.
24 "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
25 "O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me;
26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."
John 17:23-26 (NASB)

The Father speaks to the Son and the Son speaks to the Father:

41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42 "I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me."

John 11:41-42 (NASB)

28 "Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."

John 12:28 (NASB)

1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. 3 "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 "I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 "Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
6 "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 "Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; 8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. 9 "I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; 10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 "I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. 12 "While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 "But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. 14 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 "For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

Their Future Glory

22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
25 "O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; 26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

John 17:1-26 (NASB)

Hopefully it is already becoming obvious that there are personal distinctions between the Father and the Son, but I am not done yet. Due to the huge amount of scripture that teaches this truth, I will stop here for now.

I will post more later on the great second truth that there are eternal personal distinctions between the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.

Chris, Thank-you for your study on the eternal, personal, and distinct! aspects of our wonderful God. The three-in-one, unity-in-diversity reality of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit is a very marvelous truth for us to realize and keep in our thoughts.

I also have a hard time understandig the concept of the Trinity. I have pretty much decided that greater theological minds than mine have determined this is the truth and in my thinking it is a mystery so I just accept it as the way it is. There is a text, amd I can't recall it right off the top of my head, maybe someone on here can know what one I mean, and it says there are some things we cannot know at this time but they will be revealed to us at a later time. That text gives me a lot of comfort. One, because growing up as I did I was taught that the church had the one true answer for each and every issue that could ever be thought of, and two, I just don't feel a lot of internal pressure to become a scholar on every issue. That text kind-of gives me a more kicked-back secure attitude about Bibical issues, concerns that to others might be important but to me are a non-issue. But, if you can explain the Trinity so even I could understad it that woud be interesting to me. I would like to be able to understand that. But, if I can't then I'm cool with that, too.

So how can G-d be G-d and then Jesus and the Holy Spirit all at one time? And why would Jesus need to pray to G-d? That would be like G-d talking to himself. And when Jesus was on the cross it is like G-d is pleading with G-d for his own life. Also how can Jesus be our intercesor between Jesus and G-d if Jesus is allready G-d? If Jesus is allready G-d there is no reason for an intercesor at all.

I don't understand.

Susan 2, I am troubled by the opinion sometimes expressed that these truths have been determined by the minds of men. One of the reasons I'm using so much scripture (instead of just a few key texts) is because I want to make it VERY clear that these truths are really among the main and plain things taught throughout scripture. These truths are not the teaching of men, but the overwhelming testimony of scripture, revealed from God. We can be very plain and sure about these truths because scripture is. I hope that by the time I'm done it will become very apparent that God has most definately and clearly revealed three major truths about His Being in many many places throughout scripture. Now we may not be able totally acomprehend an infinite God, but we can apprehend what He has revealed about Himself and choose to bow the knee before the truth He has revealed.

Speakeasy, I'm not done yet. I hope to post more later tonight if I'm able. Let's take this one simple step at a time. So far the only truth that I have presented a full scriptural case for is:

There is only one God, that one God is YHWH, and there are no other Gods.

Speakeasy, do you agree or disagree that the scriptures I posted teach this truth?

Speakeasy, The questions you presented above are the exact same questions my 19 year old son askedme several nights ago. Since I have always wondered the same things I could not answer him. Chris, then please answer this one. Truly I'm ot asking in jest, I am sincerely wanting an answer. How come while in agony on the cross did Jesus say, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Was He saying this to himself? Also it says no man knows the hour when He comes, not even the Son, only the Father knows. To be totally honest with you that sounds like two seperate beings. Jesus I totally uderstand is/was totally God and fully man. The Holy Spirit I understand is fully God and God the father as I read my Bible it says "God is spirit" and in another place it says, "God is love" so I am cool with that. What I don't get is how there is only one God in Christianity and not three gods. So, as I said above I'm not a Bibical scholar so I accept it. I will try to learn from you but if I "don't get it" I doubt I'll lose any sleep over it because I figure God is a God of mercy and He will have mercy on me in my ignorance. However, I am able to understand the Communion wafer and Communion wine as truly being the body and blood of Jesus. I giess that is one of the main issues that led me to the Lutheran because the Lutheran's are the only ones so far that have been abe to explain Communion to me that it makes sense. However, the Lutheran explination is generally too Catholics for most Protistants and too Protastant for most Catholics.

Susan, those are very good questions. I would ask that you hold them until we have examined each of the truths God has revealed about Himself. I think we tend to jump ahead to trying to understand all the implications and objections before we've completely looked at what scripture says. I will answer your questions, but want to make sure we're in agreement on the most basic things that scripture teaches first.

Susan, I understand that you are not challenging this, but I just want to make sure we're approaching this systematically and are on the same page as we go along. Would you agree so far that scripture seems pretty clear that there is only one God and that God is YHWH, and there is no other?

I'm obviously dying for someone to answer me :-) Anyone? Anyone? :-)

Speakeasy, I would still very much like an answer on whether you would agree that the scripture I posted in my first post teaches that there is only one God and that God is YHWH. However, in the interest of moving this thread forward. I would like to continue working on the second great truth:

"The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are eternally personally distinct".

Last time I posted a large amount of scripture showing that the Father and Son are two persons, that they love each other and that they speak to each other. These scriptures teach that Jesus is not God the Father. Tonight I would like to begin by adding scripture that teaches that Jesus is not the Holy Spirit.

16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

John 14:16 (NASB)

26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

John 15:26 (NASB)

7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

John 16:7 (NASB)

13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

John 16:13-14 (NASB)

19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Matt 28:19 (NASB)

22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."
Luke 3:22 (NASB)

Finally, I will list texts that teach that the Father is not the Holy Spirit (some of the texts listed above apply here as well):

16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

John 14:16 (NASB)

26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

John 15:26 (NASB)

The Spirit intercedes with the Father for us in prayer:
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

Romans 8:26 (NASB)

19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Matt 28:19 (NASB)

If you combine tonights posting with my posting from 9/28, it should become obvious that Jesus is not God the Father, Jesus is not the Holy Spirit, and God the Father is not the Holy Spirit. The Bible makes it very clear repeatedly that the Father, Son, and Spirirt are personally distinct. I could belabor this point a bit by going into scripture that shows that these personal distinction existed not only prior to the incarnation, but prior to creation, but this isn't really a thread addressing modalism so I'll move on unless anyone has any objections.

So far we have learned from scripture that:
1) There is only one God (YHWH).
2) The Father, Son, and Spirit are personally distinct.

Before we move on, would anyone like to disagree with either of these two points? I'm serious, we can discuss both of these two truths further if necessary because I want to make sure we're on the same page before we move on. Remember, we don't need to debate every possible objection, implication, or question at this point. We just need to apprehend if scripture actually teaches these two things. Once we have all the data on the remaining truths we will then be able to discuss the implications. Don't worry, I won't leave that out. But for right now, do you think that scripture clearly teaches the two truths I've asserted? Anyone?

Okay, well let's take a little time to look at this' Speakeasy. In your opinion Speakeasy, what would you say is the MAIN teaching of these two texts:

"To you it was shown that you might know that the LORD (YHWH), He is God; there is no other besides, Him.

Deut 4:35 (NASB)

"Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD (YHWH), He is God in heaven above, and on the earth below,; there is no other.

Deut 4:39 (NASB)
