I thought maybe haystacks meant "no meat".

I wonder how many non-Adventists have been told they were going to be eating "haystacks," and thought, "Who are these people? They're going to feed us hay? Do they think we're horses?" Hehe. What an embarrassing cult! ;-)

Ha Melissa! It was only after graduating from college and having an opportunity to meet "non-Adventist" that I realized that "hay stacks" were a SDA cultural phenomena.....at least that particular name is. We still eat 'em and we still call 'em haystacks......maybe you never outgrow some things. We're not vegetarians anymore, but we also still eat cottage chees loaf (sometimes called Special k loaf). We call it Adventist comfort food. :-)

I have learned to make enchiladas using Fake Steak, or LL vegeburger as it is better known. When I make them, even non-vegetarians, if I do not tell them, think they are good. If I had said what they were made of, no one would have touched them. It is fun to be complimented on my delicious enchiladas. It is my Mom's recipe.

Chris, I've never heard of cottage cheese loaf either... Of course, I married a hispanic my first time and their culture has a bunch of foods I'd never heard of either.

Speeking of weird food-I just ordered a case, yes the biggest size case they make, I ordered it yesterday because the conference is having their case sale, so I ordered a case of vege-corndogs. Ummmm, ummmm, I l-o-v-e those things. Do you ever eat at Hot Dog on a Stick? They sell those wonderful vege-corndogs there and I can go to the mall and that will be the only thing I purchase (along with a lime lemonade). Dang, I love that vege-meat. Did you know if you wad it up in a ball it will bounce? I recently got a new cookbook. It's called, 50 Vegetarian Soup Recipes. You can add meat though if you want to. I really like going to the Hare Krishna gatherings. At the end of their totally spun service they have an awsome, absoutely wonderful vegetarian feast. And, oh, those Krishna's can cook!

Susan, you're right! The only thing good about sda-ism are those vege-corndogs on a stick! Loma Linda foods (remember them) used to have a booth at the L.A. county fair years ago and I looked forward to going to the fair just to have one of those "corn-dogs" :-)

Speaking of SDA food memories, one of my favorites was the "fry smell" from the vegeburger stand that filtered through the campground after sundown as the Sabbath evening campmeeting service ended. Yum! That has always been a notalgic aroma for me.

Incidentally, Richard and I have discovered that the In-N-Out Burger stand just outside Loma Linda replicates that smell perfectly. What a treat to drive through, smell that smell--and get REAL grilled cheese or REAL hamburger instead of Redi-burger! (Those of you in So. Cal and certain other points in the southwest undoubtedly know In-N-Out--I'm sure you know it's a Christian business. Look for the Bible texts printed on the bottom of the cups and other containers...)

I used to enjoy some of those fake meats also, until I discovered that soy (especially that highly-processed soy in those fake meats, soy protein isolate, etc.) is dangerous to one's health. You can find info about soy here: http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html Soy was actually not recognized as a food for thousands of years, until the Asians figured out how to ferment it, to neutralize some of the harmful properties in it.

Also, SDAs say that meat-eating is harmful to one's health. But people were eating meat for thousands of years with hardly any incidence of cancer, no heart disease, etc. Heart disease hardly existed just 85 years ago!

The SDA "health message" is not healthy. It is actually quite unhealthy.

Also, EGW said: "The grains, with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood." (Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 313, paragraph 3.)

That is simply not true. Real Vitamin B12 is not found in plant foods--it's only in animal foods. If people had followed her advice (when there were no synthetic vitamin supplements) they would have died. And still today there could be people who don't think they need vitamin supplements even on a vegan diet. I'm sure you all heard about the SDA baby who died from B12 deficiency. So sad. EGW was a murderer! She made people think that her messages came from God and that they could have absolute faith in them!

While I'm on the subject of EGW and her "health message," the SDAs say "who cares if Jesus ate meat, who cares if the Bible says it's ok, we shouldn't eat it now because it's more diseased then back then." But EGW said that meat was bad, corrupted the morals, and ruined the intellect, back in the days of the Israelites in the wilderness! So that would certainly incriminate God Himself for commanding the Jews to eat meat, feeding meat to Elijah every meal twice a day, and eating it Himself when He came to this earth! EGW blasphemes Jesus Christ.

One last thing: SDAs and EGW say that Jesus is our example "in all things." So why does "all things" not include diet? It's crazy. In order to perfect a Christlike character, we cannot have a Christlike diet. It does not make sense at all!

I can wager a guess as to why heart attacks are up in this country in the last century...hydrogenated oils. Margarine is horrible for you and hydrogenated oils are in everything. It is so bad for you that in the year 2006, every product containing it will have a government warning.

Why didn't EGW see that one coming????!!! Butter saves lives! Eat more butter!

Now that I think of it, she should have been warning people to stick to the things God provided and not man made stuff.

But then SDAism is a man/woman made religion, so.......

Awhile back was an article on another website about people who live strictly by EGW's health counsil that they are prone so some very serious sicknesses, inluding crones disease, gout and some others. I love eating at In-and-Out. In fact, I ate there yesterday. It's one of the few fast food joints that doesn't give me an icky taste in my mouth after I eat, a feeling that I have to get to my toothbrush and mouthwash fast. And, Valerie, the Hot Dog On a Stick places at the mall sell the Morningstar Farms corndogs. I remember so well the snack bar at campmeeting. They refused to have it open on Sabbath yet about 30 minutes (sometimes even more) before sunset on Sabbath the good SDA's would start lining up to get their vegeburgers, haystacks and other SDA fast foods. It always seemed to make such a mockery of the Sabbath hours to me. Those of you on here who are from countries other than the United States, does the SDA church where you are make such a big deal about food as they do here? At the little SDA church I went to in Hawaii at the potluck was a lot of fish. At a Korean SDA church I went to recently at the potluck was several dishes with chicken, so I think a lot of the food stuff is cultural. My friend who is ethnic Hawaiian eats white rice with pork blood poured over it. It's really horrible looking food and smells bad. She's SDA. I told her the SDA teach it is wrong to eat pork. Her answer to me was, "I don't eat pork." I told pork blood is pork. She said that means to not eat pork meat and the blood isn't meat and that's what Hawaiians eat, so there. I stopped the conversation at this point. The weirdest thing the SDA's make is Wham. Think about it. If ham is a sin then Wham is immatation sin.

Pheeki,

Great posts! I agree completely. Also, besides the hydrogenated oils/trans fatty acids, there's all of the processed junk food, other refined vegetable oils, refined carbohydrates, etc.

Susan,

EGW also said that we are under the restriction of not eating any blood, though!

Of course, she also said at one point that pork is nutritious food...

Have all of you seen these quotes? "The action of the blood upon the lower or animal organs of the brain, causes unnatural activity, tends to recklessness in morals, and the mind and heart are in danger of being corrupted." (Healthful Living, page 185, paragraph 1.) "The indulgence of unnatural appetites and passions has a controlling influence upon the nerves of the brain. The animal organs are strengthened, while the moral and spiritual are depressed. It is impossible for an intemperate man to be a Christian, for his higher powers are brought into slavery to the lower passions." (The Signs of the Times, 08-11-1887, paragraph 5.)

We have animal organs in our brains?! Have any of the SDA medical professionals been able to locate these? And shouldn't we have surgery to remove these animal organs from our brains, so that it will be easier to achieve perfection?? I wonder what Dr. Ben Carson would say if a sincere EGW-believing person asked him to perform brain surgery on her to take these out??! Wow, how did we ever believe in that crazy woman?

Also notice in that last quote that EGW says that we have moral organs in our brains and that we have spiritual organs in our brains! What if we have brain surgery to remove a tumor, and these moral and/or spiritual organs are removed? Does that mean that we no longer have a chance at becoming perfect/going to heaven!? Would it then be "impossible" "to be a Christian," as EGW says in that last quote? These are the questions that need to be asked of SDAs. Seriously. I would love to know their response.

Jeremy, you are right about the dangers of soy. There are several studies that show that soy interferes with the formation of brain cell connections and that children who consumed soy milk during their first two years have a much highe insidence of learning disabilities.
Susan-2, I grew up in South America and they also made a big deal about being vegetarian. There were no canned vegie meats so people learned how to make gluten from scratch. My mom used to make this yummy gluten roast with mixed nuts, onions, green pepper and don't know what else. It smelled wonderful and tasted soo good.
We still eat vegie steaks and skallops once in a while. My hubbie is so funny, he won't eat pork roast, ham or bacon but if we go to a buffet style restaurant and if the string beans or bake beans have bacon he will eat them.
Susan-2 I know this is the wrong thread but I wanted you to know that I keep your sons in my prayers.

Jeremy, I have a former sister-in-law who is JW. She insists that a person after receiving a blood transfusion takes on the conscience and moral (or immoral) and spiritual parts of the person whose blood had been transfused into that person. I remember years ago the SDA's in my life found out that some pig parts are used in surgeries. For instance the absorbing thread used to sew up the surgerical internal wounds, corneas, some other things. It turned into a major discussion if any of them were to have surgery if they needed to first ask the doctor the animal source of everything used in their bodies. And, yes, for you who never were SDA's out there reading this, yes, those people really do get all worked up about such things. Finily they decided the Bible says not to eat pork so if pig parts are used in surgery it would be o.k. because it wouldn't be passing through the digestive system. These were the exact same people who spent one evening trying to figure out where the corner of their beard is so they don't sin by maring the corner of their beards. I think they are looney.

EGW also said that certain meats, spices, coffee, tea, should not be eaten because it will cause us to have immoral thoughts and cause us to "indulge in self-pleasuring" (masturbate). LOL. What a "nut case" she was.

OO.K., I admit that I'm probably silly with fatigue (Richard and I were up until 1:00 working on Proclamation mailing lists and LAM Inc statements, etc.), but I've just been giggling helplessly reading this thread.

Indeed, what exactly ARE the animal organs? And are they limited to the brain? Might the appendix be an animal organ also, in light of Susan's post above? And what exactly might be the effect of refined soy--not developed yet in Ellen's day-- on these organs? Might the immitation sin of soy (also mentioned in Susan's post) catalyze a cascade of immitation passions resulting in immitation sins? Would we then be responsible for these acts?

I think I'll go open a can of tuna...

I would think that an imitation gospel is just right for imitation sins.

B is a soy-aholic. He eats soy yogurt, soy milk, soy meats, soy everything. I've tried to get him to read the articles before, but unless and until it is proven by an SDA source (and maybe even then), he's not going to believe anything that changes how he thinks about all animal products. He cannot accept the human body needs anything but plant products. Soy is the "proof" in his mind because it is a "complete protein". "God's original diet is best"...you know the line.

Melissa,
That sounds so familiar! Sam, my husband, has gotten more and more fanatical about diet. When we first met, he would eat poultry and salmon, but no, he's "overcome" that :-)
