My best friend called me last night to tell me that SDA people may actually have a leg to stand on. He quoted from Matthew 5 about the fulfilling the law conversation with Jesus. I know that yall have probably already noticed this but yesterday it opened my eyes. Even in that conversation, the law is still put to the back burner. It was given a time limit like Paul basically said. Christ didn't come to abolish the law, he came to fulfill it. That is what every SDA throws at me. I go to other scriptures to combat them, but that is the only scripture that I had issues explaining to them so they can understand, until last night. As I was reading with my friend I saw that Jesus placed a time limit on the Law by saying until it is Accomplished. What the Jews and the SDA share is that they don't realize that in all of their infinite wisdom and biblical intellect; Jesus Christ was speaking over their heads. I then went to the Gospel according to John where he documents the last moments of Christ. Where he states something to the effect of: knowing that scripture was fulfilled and Christ giving up the ghost and saying, "it is finished." In that passage layed the translation of Matthew 5 for me to give to the SDA people that I talk to. I showed it to my best friend and he was astonished. I know that you all already knew about it, I wish I would have said something earlier.

and don't let them stop with "the law". The full passage says "the law and the prophets" speaking to the whole OT, not just the 10 Cs as they often try to say it is about.

Wow, Helovesme, Luke 24:44 really states it, doesn't it? The law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms all spoke of Jesus, and He came to fulfill all that!

Hrob, you're absolutely right about Jesus' "It is finished!" And you're also right about Jesus speaking right over the heads of Jews and Adventists. Adventists do NOT interpret "fulfilled" accurately. Somehow they say being "fulfilled" means the law remains. It's just illogical reasoning.

By the way, it's good to see you here again. How's your wife and the pregnancy?

With prayers for you and her,
Colleen

But they will probably use the argument about Luke 24 that things were fulfilled such as Jesus was born in Bethlehem, went to Egypt, entered on a donkey--that type of thing.

I agree, "fulfilled" has a totally different meaning within and now without Adventism.

Praise God...

Hrob,

Regarding the part of the passage about Jesus saying he didn't come to abolish the Law, see this old post of mine. Also, as Melissa pointed out there is absolutely NO basis for saying that Jesus is talking about the 10 Cs. He says, "the Law or the Prophets" and then says, "not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished." Of course, as you said, that's until "all is accomplished" anyway, but there is no reason for them to say that "the Law" means the 10 Cs.

And then they go on to the next verse which says, "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." And they continue with the assumption that somehow Jesus is talking about the 10 Cs. Even if He WAS talking about the commandments of the Law, again there is no reason to assume He is talking about the 10 Cs! But Jesus is talking about His commands/teachings (Gr. entole) that He was giving.

Thanks guys. I love talking to yall. And Colleen, my wife and I had a rough week last week. We went to Atlanta to visit her dad for new years. While we were there she started getting unbearable pains so we rushed her to the ER. They did an ultrasound and everthing was good. They said that it was her uterus stretching and the fibroid(the size of a softball) causing the pain. But then they gave her loritab and prescribed some for her. The next day on the way back to Huntsville she began vomitting in the car. She vomitted all night. She then began bleeding badly. I rushed her to the ER again. The doctor said that she would miscarry within the hour. So I prayed. Called and woke up my parents and they prayed. Her Obgyn prescribed progesterone gel caps as a last ditch effort to stop the bleeding and stabalize the uterus. To keep her body from miscarrying. He said that the baby is fighting the fibroid for space since the fibroid is leaning on the uterus. He figured that we could buy the baby about a week of time and then the sack and the baby would be big enough to push the fibroid. By the grace of God the progesterone worked. We took an ultrasound the next day and everything was okay. Thank God

Helovesme, that was sick. It put the icing on the cake for me. So now we have matt 5. illustrating Jesus prophecying his fulfulling of the Law. Then we have Jesus in John actually stating the accomplishment of the Law's fulfillment. Then in Luke we have Jesus reflecting after the fact to explain his fulfillment of the Law. That is powerful. What I mighty teacher we have in Jesus.

I will certainly keep you, your wife and the little baby in my prayers. I sure hope that the fibroid passes and there is no further troubles. It ounds like she has a good doctor and that is a blessing. Now about the "fullfilled" word. I was brought up to belive tht IF Jesus could fullfill the aw then since He is our example we are to fullfill he law by living a perfect, sin-free life the same way He did. We can also fullfill the law. I know, it is toally warped and skewed but nonetheless that is the SDA interpertation of that text. And, I think that understanding of that text leads a lot of SDA's into deep depression.

Rob,
I am so thankful your wife and baby survived last week's ordeal. Hang in there, my friend. Please tell your wife she has many unknown friends who care for her and your little one. Because of that care, I am lifting all 3 of you up to our Great Physician. He knows your needs and desires. He is using you in a mighty way.

Thanks again. We need it. Now that she is okay. She is eating me out of house and home. I can't seem to buy groceries fast enough to feed her. It is crazy.

I will continue to keep you in my prayers that the Great Physician will keep the baby and your wife in His hands. And yes, she will eat you out of house and home. That was a frightening experience. Take good care of her.
