Hello everyone, I know that this might seem petty to you. But as Spring Training began yesterday, I was forced to reminisce on the upsettng loss that my St. Louis Cardinals took to the Boston Red Sox in October. With a new season at hand. I would like to ask you all for your prayers towards the well being and success of my favorite team. We finally have an Ace of our pitching staff by the Grace of God, but we lost a great bullpen guy in order to get him. We lost to strong Christians in Mike Matheny (catcher) and Woody Williams(pitcher). May God smile on this team. Thanks in advance guys.

GO CARDS.

HrobinsonW, maybe it is because I have never been very interested in sports, but I have a problem praying for the success of one sports team over another. Both sides are engaged in a competitive match of God-given skills in what is just a game. When we ask God to "smile on" our team are we not implying that He should NOT smile on the other team?

Please don't take offense at my difference with you. It is just my personal opinion, but I think this trivializes and distorts our representation of God.

Iím not really into sports but I do know that many of the professional athletes are mentored by their chaplains to see their jobs as a platform for witnessing for Jesus. They see themselves as marketplace ministers. The chaplain in our area is under Campus Crusade for Christ and not only does he meet often with them during the week but they have training seminars off season for players and their wives so they know how to speak to the media and others more effectively.

Iíve known Christian players who have gotten some powerful witnessing statements through to the media. But what we donít recognize is that many of them are speaking out even more, but the media chops that part of their comments. They donít get discouraged but keep plugging away. Also, most are very active in various local outreaches.

Bob, I've been told that the prayers on field before the game are not asking for a win. Rather the players are seeking to have a game played fairly by both sides and for there to be no injuries.

Have you ever seen poorer sports than SDA's. They have, because of "counsel", not participated in organized sports on a whole. In fact the only organized sport that many have experienced was class competition in academy. Without the opportunity to experience losing and with the belief that they have the only true version of truth Adventist in many ways are very poor sportsmen. Or for that matter they are very poor winners as well.

Maybe that is why they fight so hard for doctrine that are only tenuious in proof. That thought struck me while I was reading the article by Walter Rea in the latest Proclamation. Any change to their doctrine or change in the state of their prophet because they see it as losing.

The whole concept of the cross was one of loss leading to a great victory.

We can so focus on being "right" that we lose opportunities to do right and to be an example to others.

I LOVE baseball. I have met Jim Eisenrich several times. He seems like a very nice man. I was extremely fortunate when I was in 12th grade in that I came down with chicken pox on the first day of The World Series and I got to stay home from school and watch the entire World Series. My alltime favorite player is Willie Mays. Oh, be still, my heart! I will ask the Lords blessings over all the players, that each player stays off thoze bad drugs, they play fair and there are no serious injouries or riots at the ballparks. Oh, I think I'm in love, I'm now fixating again on Willie Mays.

Speeking of sports-when I was a kid at Monterey Bay Academy the teacher out on the sports field actually had the nerve to tell us kids that it is wrong to keep score. Of course, every kid out there had a mental scorecard going. Do any of you others remember those sports rules from SDA school? I remember Saturday night roller skating. The grown-ups wanted us to lolly around the rink at a snails pace. The kids wanted to turn it into roller derby.

Hrobinsonw,

Funny that it would take a thread like this to get a "lurker" like me to come out and offer my first post. You HAD to go and mention the Cards so I just couldn't resist. Ever since the '82 WS when they beat Milwaukee, I've been a fan. I guess I started out as being vengeful since the Brewers came back to eliminate my hometown team, the Angels (how could anyone want a team with this name to lose, right?). Willie McGee, Ozzie, Darrell Porter, Herr, Sutter...what a great team they were. I became even more of a fan within the last few years when my favorite Angel at the time, Jim Edmonds, signed there as a free agent. We live about 6 hours from St. Louis now, so we try to get out for a game every year or so. I'm glad the season is starting so I can try and forget about last year's debacle of a Series.

Goldenbear, I went to an SDA academy in Southern California that dared participate in athletic competition with other schools. And not only that but...dum dum dum...NON-ADVENTIST Christian academies! Regular exposure to Babylon! That was the league we were placed in by the CIF. We had many sports for both boys and girls but I only played on the baseball team. In most SDA academies, exposure to kids outside of the denomination is limited, as you know. I feel blessed in that it was a great way to fellowship with kids from other schools and walks of life. It's too bad that this experience had to be limited to the "athletes" of our school. What struck me, though, was how friendly and what good sports most of the kids were on the opposing teams which quite honestly wasn't as true on our side. We even went out for pizza a time or two with the other team after the game. It was great. Yet, somehow this fellowship with other Christians is construed as evil in many traditional circles. I guess I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Go Cards and Angels!

I would have responded sooner, but I just finished watching 11 innings of GREAT baseball, as the Florida Gators beat the #2 rated Miami Hurricanes. Hey, the spring games here in Florida don't start for another week and a half. In the meantime, there is college ball. Besides, I really love college sports, sometimes better than the pros.

So.

GO GATORS!

He doesn't mind, and I'm still in HIS hands!

Heretic, welcome to the forum! We're glad you're here.

You went out for pizza?! That is also a sin according to Ellen. ;-)

Welcome Heretic,
Thanks for coming from behind the door and letting us know you are there. As you have noticed, at times we agree to disagree and we do it in a friendly fashion.
We pray for each other here and listen when one wants to vent about whatever is happening in their lives. Keep coming back.
God is awesome.

Welcome, Heretic. Sutter was great. Matt Morris has grown a full beard to resemble Sutter. I know Ozzy Smith's ex wife and son. They sung in the Choir at my old Church. Did you know that his son is one of the finalist on American Idol. How do you think Ryan Seacrest got into Busch Stadium in the middle of a Pennant Race.

But anyway, we have lost one pitcher to sudden death during the season. We have had players blow out knees and elbows on a regular basis. But hey we just keep on playing, and that is why you love them.

Goldenbear, I have played organized sports all of my life. Everyday is a sport from, I drive my wife crazy. I call the unborn baby "The Rookie." But back to my story. My wife's cousin has children. I am teaching him every single sport. He wants to learn so bad. So I told him that the best way to learn is to find competition. So I started coaching a soccer team and invited him but his dad wouldn't let him play because we played on Saturday. Later on I ended up going to one of his Basketball practices because I felt that it would be the same for every kid world wide. Believe me, I was shocked. Those kids need real coaches. They need to play real teams. They need to be able to play games of 21 after school with their friends. I almost feel like he is missing out.

All this talk of sports...I love it...I am a great sports fan. My husband is a gifted athlete. He is one of those annoying people who can do well in everything he tries. Growing up as a SDA teenager was difficult for him. He was never allowed to do any sport because of the Friday night and Saturday conflict. Plus he was always told the competition was wrong. He could never figure at why "College Bowl" competition was okay. Taking the MCAT and the LSAT and applying to medical/dental/law school was all "OK" competition...what was the difference? All our life is a competition -- every apect -- jobs, school, buying a house...

Both our children are on a swim team. They are not only learning good swimming skills, they are learning life lessons, good self-esteem, confidence, performance under pressure, learning to deal with defeat as well as victory and most of all that God has given them a special ability to witness their love for Him in a unique way they may otherwise not have. It has been a wonderful family activity with many opportunities to spend quality weekends together and gives us a bond that we may not have ever had.

We found a really great website that my kids have enjoyed. It is a Christian athlete website where you can find a Christian who competes in just about any sport imaginable. Hrob, I bet your nephew would really enjoy it.

Alas the NHL season has officially been laid to rest.We could see it coming but the bitterness of this Great Disappointment is heartfelt up here.Unfortunately the only spring training going on here is competative snow shoveling or a game of pin the tail on the reindeer.Randy

Dd,
Probably it didn't come out blue and underlined is because you didn't have www in front of it, like this: www.thegoal.com

The NHL season killed me too. These athletes and owners make too much money to be arguing over figures. I would play for gas money.

Welcome, Heretic!

What academy did you attend? Did you play Arrowhead Christian Academy? That's where I taught and where our boys attended--actually, our younger is still there. He graduates this June. (I can't possibly be that old!)

Colleen,

I feel like I already know you since I've been reading so many of your posts over the past few weeks. The same could be said for many of you regular posters and thanks for the greetings from everyone.

About going to Arrowhead Christian...sure did. I went to La Sierra Academy in Riverside. The first time I got into a game as a Freshman (team was mostly Seniors) was at AC. It was in the late innings and I was so nervous that I just flung at the first pitch. Luckily the ball found it's way into centerfield for a basehit so I'll always have fond memories of Arrowhead. I think we ended up winning something like 25-3 (sorry about that :-) which is probably why the coach even let me into the game. That was back when their field was full of gopher holes so running down a flyball was a little harrowing, but then it seems like we went back a year or two later and the field conditions were much nicer, maybe even a new one -- can't quite remember.

Regarding my comment earlier about going out for pizza...since we were out fraternizing with the Babylonians (aka the kids from LaVerne Lutheran) it's highly possible that pepperoni found it's way onto one or more of our tables, I'm sure serving to arouse the animal passions of the partaking youth. Sister White would surely have frowned upon the pitchers of Coke, root beer, and Sprite, too.

Hrobinsonw,
I think I may have gotten it wrong earlier when I said that Jim Edmonds went to STL as a free agent. Instead, it seems that was the trade that brought over Adam Kennedy another guy who was a pitcher whose name I can't remember right now (Ken something?). Well, I hope the good folks in STL love David Eckstein as much as we Angel fans still do. You won't find anyone who plays with as much heart as that little guy does.
