I know Melissa.....to those who have never been...we must have seemed super strange! My husband never was an SDA, and he notices really odd things that many of us would never even realize.

That is too funny! Oh my gosh, I unknowingly ate some pork!

I can remember once my family was visiting my grandparents (who were not sda) and the tv happened to be on, and the sun had JUST set on a Friday evening....when my sister realized she'd been watching the TV for a few minutes during the "Sabbath" she apologized to my mom and I. She was quite embarrassed and ashamed.

Why wasn't it obvious to us how legalistic we were???

And also how CARNAL we were? The Adventist focus on "the health message" is just plain carnality. It's entirely physical and consumes one in self-evaluation and self-absorbtion and self-condemnation.

Amazing!

Thanks for the laughs everyone. I'm getting caught up on the past week's posts. My husband tells our kids that coffee turns your stomach black. My husband's black, so what's wrong with that?! Does that mean then that white food and milk turn your stomach white?

A funny observation I had last Saturday, actually more than one: I helped with the visitor's dinner and noticed they don't put out pepper shakers! But they put out salt shakers (what about all those people with high blood pressure?) I know there's some EGW thing about pepper being a stimulant, but I just never noticed before (probably because I don't season my food with salt or pepper at the table).

And several people were talking about what had been on Oprah on Friday afternoon. Now, I don't know, but Oprah is on from 4-5p.m. here in MN and isn't that getting awfully close to sundown? Shouldn't they be busy doing their last minute Sabbath preparations?

And here's something else that probably doesn't fit here, but I'm doing it anyway: have any of you ever gone to an Adventist funeral where the body has been cremated? My kid's teacher's dad died of leukemia last week and my kids and I attended the funeral. It actually was a nice service; they had a slide show and people stood up and talked about their memories of the person. Of course, I took note of the statement that he's sleeping in Jesus! My husband had a fit that we'd gone to a funeral where the body was cremated. I didn't know anything about it til we got to the service.

Some quote that I relate to.

"He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." Sir Winston Churchill

"There are people who strictly deprive themselves of each and every eatable, drinkable, and smokable which has in any way acquired a shady reputation. They pay this price for health. And health is all they get for it. How strange it is. It is like paying out your whole fortune for a cow that has gone dry." Mark Twain

"You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred." Woody Allen

Just last night I went to Dirk's site and read about EGW's health counsil. She had NO origional health counsil that was noble and good. Every health counsil that was an ORIGIONAL OF HERS was totally stupid-like wigs cause people to become insane, stimulates cause masterbation, the infamous health reform dress, can't sleep on feather beds (this has to be my favorite because it's just so corny), the list goes on and on. It almost seems to me that it somehow could be worked into a comedy routine on Comedy Central. In my family we each think we are the family stand-up comedian and I do my EGW routine in vision and get my kids cracking up. I'd better stop because I really do not intend to be rude or unkind to the sincere lurkers. If I am than please accept my apology.

On the other hand...here's an opposite teaching from EGW regarding coffee:

"IT IS YOUR DUTY TO DO THIS

When you see that you are becoming weak physically, it is essential for you to make changes, and at once. Put into your diet something you have left out.

It is your duty to do this.

GET EGGS FROM HEALTHY FOWLS. USE THE EGGS COOKED OR RAW. DROP THEM UNCOOKED IN THE BEST UNFERMENTED WINE YOU CAN FIND. THIS WILL SUPPLY THAT WHICH IS NECESSARY TO YOUR SYSTEM. DO NOT FOR A MOMENT SUPPOSE THAT IT WILL NOT BE RIGHT TO DO THIS".

TO A PHYSICIAN DYING FROM OVERWORK AND A MEAGER DIET. K-37-1901 page 286

Sorry about all the caps, I just cut and pasted from an older post of mine back in the archives.

Still, Ya'll remember your "duty" now, ya hear? :-)

Okay, here's one that DOES include coffee:

"Diseases of every stripe and type have been brought upon human beings by the use of TEA AND COFFEE AND THE NARCOTICS, OPIUM, AND TOBACCO.

These hurtful indulgences must be given up, NOT ONLY ONE, BUT ALL; for ALL are hurtful, and ruinous to the PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND MORAL POWERS, and should be discontinued from a health standpoint.

THE COMMON USE OF THE FLESH OF DEAD ANIMALS HAS HAD A DETERIORATING INFLUENCE UPON THE MORALS AS WELL AS THE PHYSICAL CONSTITUTION.
Ill health in a variety of forms, if effect could be traced to the cause, WOULD REVEAL THE SURE RESULT OF FLESH EATING".

"The Creator of man has arranged the living machinery of our bodies. Every function is wonderfully and wisely made.

AND GOD PLEDGED HIMSELF TO KEEP THIS HUMAN MACHINERY IN HEALTHFUL ACTION IF THE HUMAN AGENT WILL OBEY HIS LAWS AND COOPERATE WITH GOD.

EVERY LAW GOVERNING THE HUMAN MACHINERY IS TO BE CONSIDERED JUST AS TRULY DIVINE IN ORIGIN, IN CHARACTER, AND IN IMPORTANCE AS THE WORD OF GOD.

Every careless, inattentive action, any abuse put upon the Lord's wonderful mechanism, by disregarding His SPECIFIED LAWS IN THE HUMAN HABITATION, IS A VIOLATION OF GOD'S LAW".

MS-3-1897 Early Teaching of Physiology. page 221
---------------------------------------------
I'm still looking for this "pledge" from God:

"AND GOD PLEDGED HIMSELF TO KEEP THIS HUMAN MACHINERY IN HEALTHFUL ACTION IF THE HUMAN AGENT WILL OBEY HIS LAWS AND COOPERATE WITH GOD".
-------------------------------------------
Is there a pledge from God to keep this human machinery in "healthful action" if we obey His Laws and cooperate with Him???

Just wonderin'--I'd want to know where that's at in the Scriptures. Anyone know?

I'm guessing that is probably referring to the 'none of these diseases' promise God gave the Isrealits. I don't remember the reference right now.

What the heck is UNFERMENTED WINE? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Richard said that even his strict vegetarian mom (who today is a strict Wiemar-style vegan) used to give him raw eggs in grape juice when he was sick as a boy. So, for that matter, did my mom. (It's just that my mom has never claimed to be vegetarian!)

Actually, the way my mom fixed it, those drinks were pretty good. She'd put grape juice, an egg, cinnamon, and some honey in a blender, and the result was quite good. I called it egg-nog.

Colleen,

Remember Arleta? Well when she moved out of this building to another city, I'd go up on the weekends (remember?) to spend the weekend with her and attend her SDA Church also.

Well, one Friday I went walking around to find a market that sells 'brown' eggs because that's all she'd eat in the way of meat. Bingo, there was a chicken farm only a couple blocks from her home so in elation I returned to tell her of this mother lode I had struck.

She opened her refrigerator to pull out a carton of eggs with "white" eggs in it. And then she explained, while pointing to the bright green label on those eggs, that they were vegetarian eggs! I about busted a gut with that one! My laughter wouldn't cease nomatter how hard she hit me! (for all you readers, Arleta is my best friend who is in her late 80's)

Once my laughter was somewhat controlled, my questions to her commenced. "So, are you telling me that these eggs, if allowed to hatch, would turn into a carot stick?, a celery stick? oh I don't know...a head of lettuce??? and not a chicken???" And my laughter was again out of control.

To this day, I still have that egg carton with that silly sticker on it that says "vegetarian."

And I'll never forget the fun I'd have when she'd ask what I felt like having for breakfast! Ohhh my goodness! On this end of your monitors I'm laughing so hard I'm crying!!

But the sad part is that she honestly believes they are now the same as a vegetable because the chickens are fed with grain or corn (I forget). And they are expensive!

God Bless my her...she's the greatest friend I've ever had insofar as human beings go. I miss her.

I'm wonderin' (again) if those who are vegans think the egg is not a meat product. Does Richard's mom still eat eggs, being a vegan and all?

Denise

Not sure how this sentence "God Bless my her..." ended up like that. It should read:

"God Bless her...."

It could have been because originally it read: "God Bless my friend...." and I changed it but forgot to omit "my." ahem...still need more coffee! <grin>

Yes, Denise, I've seen "vegetarian" eggs. I think many Adventists who buy them think they will have fewer diseases than "regular" eggs. I think it's "magical" thinking, myself.

And no, Richard's mom doesn't eat eggs.

My mom will only eat Eggsland's Best. They cost three times as much as the regular brand and they are smaller. But, they are from free-range vegetarian chickens. I've never had one, I don't do eggs, they gross me out but my mom says she can taste the difference.

I have some SDA acquaintances who live on a farm and raise chickens. They market the eggs as "vegetarian" because supposedly they only feed their chickens vegetarian food. But the chickens are free range so I don't know how they can say that.

The same kind of chicken's lay Cadbury eggs. Must be a special diet to get them to squeeze out chocolate.
