Tracey, I have thought about that for a long time. It might be a nice thing to have around. :-)

If we had a "Chat Room" then how many people could be on at the same time? That would really make it great to get out information that needed to get out quickly. Would about 15 people be about the limit, or could as many as 50 be on line posting at the same time?

If a normal IRC channel was used, it might depend on the server being used, but I think it would basically be an unlimited number of people.

Richard and I have discussed having a chat room before. We've consciously decided not to host one on this site for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that it would not be the resource the forum is. Chat conversations are not archived; people write them fast and off the cuff--forum entries tend to be more thought out and formulated. The forum archives have actually become a resource that people peruse--often without ever posting.

Even though we've always had the technical capabilities to do a chat room, we've chosen to keep this website a place that is not only a place where we can exchange ideas with each other but also offer archived, thoughtful resources for lurkers.

Hope this makes sense!

Colleen,

Even before I read your post, I was thinking the same thing. How much would be lost if it wasn't archived.

But they are capabilities to save the chat in transcripts and post them... At my university, all of our group chats are saved and posted for whoever missed the conversation..Isn't that a good idea?

And say, it's only a once per week chat? That puts a limit on information "lost" (but not really) And then we could interact a little more with each other and that meets a need to "talk" with people that understand.

A scheduled time for chat would be great--with either voice or type. Also, instant messenging (including webcam) options are excellent ways to communciate these days. My preference is Yahoo Messenger that can be downloaded free. Yahoo seems to have a greater worldwide appeal than many others.

Even though I regularly utilize these technologies, I am somewhat astonished by this worldwide capability in communication every time I use them. For example, I have used my webcam in conversations as far away as Moscow, Russia and as close as Lincoln, Nebraska. Oh yes, don't forget to comb your hair before webcamming :>).

Dennis I have a Webcam but have never used it. I've chatted with a few on Yahoo and seen them on their Webcam but never really gotten mine set up. Maybe sometime i can try it out with you.

I'll be careful and make sure my hair is combed. :-)

Richard,

It would be great to chat with you via Yahoo Instant Messenger (including webcam). Simply email me at: dennisfischer@alltel.net to obtain my Yahoo ID number. By the way, more than two can webcam at the same time if desired (like a conference call).

I'm on another site that has a prayer chat room and that is really cool to have everyone praying at the same time. The chats are scheduled, not all day long.

I agree, Colleen, that just chatting in itself wouldn't be much of a witnessing tool.

Can we not all just "meet" somewhere to chat other than the forum?

If somebody could give me really explicit directions on how to install and use yahoo messenger, that would work for me. Those of you who don't have a yahoo address could get one (it's free.)

Any thoughts?

Carol_2, go to the following link and click on the button on the top right side of the page that says "Get it Now." You will download Yahoo Messenger. It is easy to install. When you download it, you will be asked to provide a user name and password. That is all there is to getting a free Yahoo account!

Thanks Bob! I'll try it tomorrow. BTW, was that a typo when you said you graduated high school in 1961? You look waaaaaaaaay to young for that to be the case. I was born in 1961, and you look younger than I do!

Carol I see what you mean about Bob, your right he doesn't look that old. I'm probably a year younger and know I look older. I know the beard dosn't help but I'd still look older.

Thanks Dd, which SDA "mecca" do you live in? :-)

Speaking of Santa I was priviledged to "play" santa non tradionally with a couple of groups of kids this past holiday.
