40 years in SDA and 2 years out. Can't get the help to overcome the seventh day issue of sabbath, guilt, reverting our "new day" to the old way of keeping, family pressures etc. Been going to a liberal baptist church and have asked there about the "sabbath" thing but I don't think they know how to help as the deep indoctrination is so foreign to them. Don't get me wrong they are great Christians and the Holy Spirit has been really working in our lives since we (family of 6) have been going there. Love that church and the new found Jesus Christ. I figured you all here would know what we are experiencing. So can you steer me to some materials on the seventh day sabbath vs. Sunday?
Thanks in advance for the help and will probably need more?

Welcome to the forum, Buzz! We're glad you're here.

Here is a wonderful study on the Sabbath and Sunday by a Christian Jew: http://www.ariel.org/mshabbat.html

"PraiseGod" linked to it on here recently, and I just finished reading it today. It's great. Thanks, PraiseGod.

Also, former SDA Pastor J. Mark Martin has a study on the Sabbath at: http://www.sdaoutreach.org/sabbath.cfm

There is also a great study of the Law and the Covenants on his web site: http://www.sdaoutreach.org/law-study.cfm

And you can listen to some great sermons of his on Sabbath, the Law, the Old and New Covenants, etc. at this page: http://www.sdaoutreach.org/audio.cfm

Buzz, Welcome to FAF. You came to the right place. Jeremy has given you a lot of material,(and thanks Jeremy for the Jewish Christian link above, because to me that is some of the greatest evidence). Also, I am fascinated by reading the material of John Bunyan, who wrote Pilgrim's Progress. Even EGW said that he breathed the very air of heaven. This is why it is interesting to read what he said in the 1700's to the 7th Day keepers in his time, and it is the same solid Biblical reasoning that you will find in the other links. I've mentioned it before, www.johnbunyan.org, and you scroll down awhile until you get to his treatise on the Sabbath. There is nothing new under the sun. Old heresies keep getting repeated. Welcome, Buzz! You have definitely come to the right place--we know what you're going through!

Another place you'll find excellent material (and those Jeremy listed above are also truly excellent) is www.LifeAssuranceMinistries.com

There you can order three books I consider to be invaluable in the process of figuring out the New Covenant, Adventism, and Sabbath. They are: The Cultic Doctrine of Seventh-day Adventists and Sabbath in Christ by Dale Ratzlaff and alsoDiscovering the New Covenant by Greg Taylor. These books are detailed Bible studies that address the deep indoctrination of Adventist thinking and the use of the proof-texts we used to "prove" our beliefs.

I think you'll find these materials to be extremely helpful. I'm convinced that only someone who has truly studied Adventism (or perhaps a Jew!) can really address these issues for another Adventist who is questioning because only an Adventist knows the proof-texting "path" we were taught to support our doctrines.

We look forward to hearing more of your story!

Thanks for the links. the arial.org has been fasinating to read. I am excited to get to the other links. I also appreciate your welcome to this board. My wife and I were third generation SDA and met at "boarding school" I have lived in SDA hotspots all my life from Union college, battle creek, Andrews university and have SDA relatives at Loma Linda, San Marcos and Keene TX. My wife went to the same SDA church her whole life of 50 members. My SDA questioning began early on and I just went because it was "habit". I didn't get how SDA kept the ten commandments but not the rest of that law. I didn't get how come I had to be scared of society, other faith christians, who were going to eventually persecute me and end of time events. It bothered me the "us against the world" ego mentality where SDA are saved and no one else is unless they know the sabbath. As a teen ager I couldn't wait for sundown so the fun could begin again or play sports. It came to a head 2 years ago after assisting my wife in cradle roll for 8 years and pooring thousands of dollars into it only to be told by nominating committee she couldn't be a leader any more cause of her tiny diamond ear rings which she taught with for 4+ years. (They were going back to a more conservative approach). Also, I got sick of our kids being the outsiders for going to public school. I said I wouldn't go back and this caused somewhat of a rift in the home. We both felt we wanted "religion" in our home for ourselves and children but didn't know where to turn. I became depressed and a mess followed. Needless to say we were rescued by the Holy Spirit whispering for us to try Jesus. We turned to the local baptist church some friends attend and heard the pastor preach from Galatians. We came out of there blown away excited, our kids truly can't wait to go each week, and we have hit the bible like no tomorrow. 40 years SDA and we took their word for it and didn't question or study for ourselves. Needless to say we are bible illiterate even with all of the religion classes in SDA school. All I can say is HOW eye opening! Thanks for letting me vent, and I hope you know there are a lot of good SDA people but the bible has the real message for those who wish to seek it! My wife and I continue to move forward in our new found faith. We struggle with the guilt from being "lost" according to SDA family and we get mad that our SDA family either won't talk about it or drop non-stop innuendo, instead of being thrilled for our closer walk with Jesus Christ who died for all who believe.
Thanks again!!! You don't know how much this assistance means.

Welcom To FAF Buzz. You are in a good place here and can vent any time you want, ask any questions you want, ask for prayers and just ask for anything and there will be someone to answer you.
I was 63 years in the SDA church from 1st grade through LLU, so I understand you as can every one else on this forum. I am so glad you found a church and that your kids look forward to going.
God is so good and so awesome.

Oh, Buzz, it is so exciting to discover Jesus and the living word of God. We are so happy to be able to "walk" with you through this experience in your life.

We know there are a lot of good SDA people--most of us have SDA family whom we love. Nothing, though, can compare to knowing Jesus. He is in charge, and He will complete the work He begins in us. We can trust Him to deal with our Adventist family and friends, and we can also trust Him to intercede in our own lives and help us to love them for Him.

We are glad you're here.

Hi Buzz,
Welcome! Everyone has given you wonderful advice on where to look for answers to your SDA questions. I will be praying for you, your wife and your family as you are searching for the answers to the questions that the Holy Spirit is laying on your heart. I love the promise of John 14:26 - "...the Holy Spirit...will teach you all things." and also John 16:13 - "...the Spirit of Truth...will guide you into all truth."

There is no disputing the Word of God. "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" (1 Tim. 3:16,17).

As you are in God's Word you will grow in His love and those feelings of guilt will be replaced with the peace that resting in Him brings.

GIVE ME JESUS!

Welcome Buzz,
The lingering Sabbath question is the current topic in my house as well. I too have gained enormous blessings at my local Baptist church. You are very fortunate that your whole family goes with you. We have not reached that harmony in our home yet.You are not alone in the struggle. I will pray for peace and calm for you as I know this is a tremendous stressor not only for you but for your loved ones. In His time, Randy

Glad to see you found us Buzz! Praise God that He called your entire family to find truth in Him!
Do you still live in Berrien Springs? That's where my husband and i currently reside.

The Sabbath guilt is something that takes awhile to subside sometimes. But it does, when you diligently study for Bible answers and give your fears to God. He is able, to see us through in our salvation!

Here are some links to things I found valuable...as well as the things everyone's posted above :-)

One of my favorite sites (other than this one) is the WCG article section. {http://www.wcg.org/lit/law/default.htm, A whole section of Sabbath articles}

A great look at the Sabbath issue from Dale Ratzlaff's site. May I also recommend his books "Cultic Doctrine" and "Sabbath In Christ". Both excellent! Seeing the Sabbath...

This is an online debate conducted at The Bereans Apologetics and Research Ministry Forum late 2001.
Sabbath Debate

Happy studying :-)

Condensing and making the archives user-friendly is definitely on the agenda for this spring-summer. I can't promise a date, but we're working towards it!

Buzz,

Romans 8:1 says that there is therefore NOW NO condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

Do you trust God's word? Of course you do.

Then fight the devil oppressing your mind and allow the HS to set you free from the guilt. Speak God's word over to yourself "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty"

You are FREE not bound in the mind!

I trust God to lead you to this place of complete confidence in Him to remove this issue from your life. IN Jesus Name! So be it done!
