I would like to hear from you, my FAF family what is the music you go to when you need your soul soothed and refreshed. I well imagine each of you has something that is extra inspirational to you. The favorite music of my youth was a group called the Imperials. Songs like Jesus Made Me Higher and Sail On touch me like nothing else can even now. In the classical realm anything by Mr. Bach draws me upward.I am sure he will be the "composer in residence" when we get to heaven. Now toss in a trumpet soloist, brass quintet, or brass ensemble and I can face tomorrow. Now where is that valve oil? Randy

Hey! A fellow trumpet player? Ever hear of a guy named Dan Oxley? Or the Candian Brass site with a Dixieland version of 'Amazing Grace'? Of course, there's Phil Driscoll and David O'Neal...

I also listen to Don Francisco a lot---especially the live album.

What horn are you playing on?

Hello Loneviking,
Canadian Brass is in town next month and I've got 8 tickets 5 rows from the front. I'm dragging my family (nuclear and extended) along.Should be fun.
I bought my Schilke B6 in 1975 after working all summer (grade 10). I'm afraid I have succomb to the ebay curse as I also have a couple of Schilke C's for church(its fun to share). In high school Phil was my hero, still is I guess. I won't go on as you know us gearhead can get boring. Higher,Louder,Faster...in praise, Randy

I have a whole lot of Christian music, all kinds, especially because that is what I offered my kids when they wanted hard rock. Now they love POD. I like Rebecca St. James, Michelle Tumes, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Audio Adrenaline, the list goes on.

This one CD really lifts me up though. "Acoustic Worship" from the original America's 25 favorite series. By Brentwood records.

Amazing Grace is THE song that I relate to. I love the story behind it. My favorite version is when Joni sings it. My children know that it is to be played at my memorial.

I once was lost, but now am found!

It is all about Michael W. Smith...but...I can get pretty "lifted up" by listening to certain "worldly" artists such as Christopher Cross, James Taylor, Chicago, Kool and the Gang, to name a few.

Michael W.'s "Friends" may be my all-time favorite...tears each and every time it is heard!!

Right now for me, the music that really grabs me is just about anything that the group "Mercy Me" records.

Their current song "Homesick" is just fabulous. I also think that "I Can Only Imagine" will become a classic in contemporary christian music.

I also appreciate anything by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir (Calvin Hunt's rendition of "I'm Clean" will blow you away), Twila Paris (both her singing and songwriting)and FFH ( I like the song Big Fish)

My tastes in music have changed 180 degrees from how I was raised in a really traditional SDA setting where you certainly couldnít demonstrate any joy or emotion, even with music.

If Iím in a quiet contemplative mood, give me Terry MacAlmonís CDsóany of them. Or Michael Wís Worship album. At other times I really want something to express joy in the Lord. Give me some praise music where you can clap, dance and just enjoy praising the Lord. I, too, like the Brooklyn Tab music. In fact the Easter Cantata I went to was located at a daughter church from the Brooklyn Tab and they do their music.

I have a couple of CDs by someone named Robert Gay who Iím sure no one has heard of as I donít think itís from a professional publisher. Heís apparently a pastor with a church and a musical group. They do a lot of powerful songs arranged from scriptures. One album that blessed me last week of his was called People of Power, which gives you an indication of the type of texts heís put to music on that one.

Praise GodÖ

Personally I like a number of the contemporary worship compilations. Other artists that find plenty of time in my player include Jars of Clay, Matt Redman, Chris Tomlim, plus the Keith Green compilation that was released on CD.

My classical background means that I'll always cry when I hear Bach or Mozart--especially their choral music. Bach organ music also melts me.

I have grown to love worship and praise music, though. I really like Dennis Jernigan, much of Michael W Smith, Chris Tomlin, Keith Green, etc.

I love the Robn Marks CDs--the first is Revival in Belfast, then he did Come Heal This Land and Revival in Belfast II. I also love a CD some friends gave us--The Best of Sheila Walsh--she sings with Women of Faith. Her CD is wonderful and includes quite a lot of orchestral backgrounds. I also like Twila Paris--both her song writing and her singing. There's also wonderful CD called ZOE Worship--When The Music Fades. It's subtitled A Live A Cappella Modern Worship Experience, and it includes some of my favorite worship songs: You Are My All In All, Agnus Dei, Worthy Is the Lamb, Salvation Belongs To OUr God, and others.

I also love Matt Redman's song "Blessed Be the Name Of the Lord".

I love music!

I enjoy Bach and Mozart, but it has never involved any particularly religious experience for me. What I specifically enjoy is the overwhelming peace that goes with the very ordered music, particularly of Bach. But in terms of what touches my soul, I am more of a lyrics-oriented person.

My wife recently bought a CD by Fernando Ortega and I can't get enough of his rendition of "Give Me Jesus"...very moving. I also love the tight harmony of Phillips, Craig, and Dean and most of their songs are all about the awesome power of God and miracle of Grace -- gives me chills. Smitty and Mercy Me are just awesome. So many wonderful Christian artists out there these days...FFH, Newsboys, Avalon, Chris Rice, Larnelle Harris, Third Day, just to name a few. Went to MWS/Third Day's "Come Together and Worship" Tour a couple of years ago and it was incredible -- practically like a worship service, even Max Lucado spoke.

Ric, I'm also lyrics-oriented and this music has so much more of an impact on my spirituality now that my world view is less clouded by the Adventist mindset. Before I'd be like, "That's a great song even if it's theology is wrong." I guess that's why a lot of Adventists stick mostly with SDA performers.

I've also begun to be more of a lyrics person since knowing Jesus. That's probably why praise music has become so much more meaningful to me. The great classical church music seems to make me forcus more on the transcendence of God, but with praise and worship music, I am drawn to worship God in a really personal way.

Yes, Heretic--I also love Fernando Ortega, and his performance of "Give Me Jesus" is indeed very moving.

A couple of years ago I attended a Just Give Me Jesus conference by Anne Graham Lotz. Fernando Ortego was there and did this and other songs and led the worship. There was strong evidence of the Holy Spirit's presence during worship.

They did some powerful renditions of more classic hymns and I noticed than many in the audience of about 5,000 did not know those, only the more contemporary songs, which is unfortunate.

Praise God...

I love Praise and Worship music also, but my concern is with most churches going to loud drums and guitars is a tendency for lack of reverence. I have to say, it is the great Hymns of the Faith that I love, and it is a shame they are being ignored. That is why I have migrated back to the more formal worship of the reformed churches. Ther is an excellent and entertaining article by a Reformed pastor on the Praise and Worship movement, and he likes it, but talks about its abuse. I highly recommend reading it. Go to www.internetmonk.com and scroll down for awhile until you come to an article called "Looney Tunes". My all time greatest worship experience was last Christmas, "Handel's Messiah" performed by the Orange County Pacific Symphony. You feel like you are literally transported to the courts of heaven with that music. Maybe, this just shows i am getting older. Stan

Stan,

Nah, it's not because you're old. Ever since college, it hasn't been Christmas without "Handel's Messiah". Not only is it exhilarating to hear but it helps to place focus back on Christ, at least for me. My 6 year-old loves it, too. The OCPS plays at the OC Performing Arts Center, right? They built that not long before I moved away from OC and I never got the chance to go, but I heard that its incredible. What a treat that must have been for you! Go Angels!

I love the old hymns of the faith. The words come from lives of trial and reliance on Jesus. They speak to a world that the modern just doesn't live in, any more.

I also love Southern Gospel. Can't get enough of the "real" stuff, not the new commercial material. I love the Gaithers and about anything they are involved in.

Of course, from my "wild and wooly days" as a D.J., I real get into serious "meditation" with the Beach Boys, our Florida sunshine and the sound of the surf.

Course, He doesn't mind

In His Grace
(thank goodness)

Stan,
This is a little off the subject of this thread...please pardon the detour...

I went to internetmonk that you posted above. It was an interesting read regarding the music, I found I agree in part but also disagree...and I am a HUGE Handel fan, by the way...anyway...while at the site I went to another link....http://ragarambler.blogspot.com/2005/02/just-how-shocking-is-gospel.html. I wanted to share this because I found a beautiful updated "version" of John 4 (the story of the woman at the well). I think you all may enjoy the message...it's all about Jesus!

I love black gospel music the best, just love it! We sing a lot of it in our choir too, so that's just a bonus, God knew where to put me!
