One of my dreams has been, for the last 10 years or maybe more, to be a backpacker. I am about to fulfill that dream this weekend.

I would like to request everyones prayers please. For the energy and stamina to keep up with these Boy Scouts and their Dads.

I am in better shape than I have been in for quite a long time, and I have quit cigarettes. I just don't want to slow anyone down, I am almost 45 years old. I did the 3 miles up to the Lake Ramona Dam in 46 minutes tonight with 27 pounds in my pack. I'll be carrying maybe 5 more than that this weekend.

Hey when we went on the hike tonight, my daughter spotted a deer on the opposite hillside, it was beautiful. We hike in a wonderful preserve every Thursday evening called Blue Sky; it's in Poway, which is in San Diego, CA. I wish some of you lived around here. It's such a short drive from the city and yet you feel far from it all, it's so sweet and peaceful, it's God's country where we hike.

I Thank God for the Boy Scouts who are giving my son and I, (and my olders sons in the past), so much opportunity to see and learn and give back to God's beautiful earth. I also Thank God that they standfast and hold firm to the values that they were founded on. May they always continue to do so.

Thank you everyone for letting me share my dream. None of this would be possible without my God and my Jesus and the Holy Spirit praying for me. My whole life has always been in his hands and it only took my letting go for it all to fall into place.

Hey, Scout!

I second your praise of the Boy Scouts. I actually was the first female scoutmaster in our council some years ago. I didn't want to do it. I was a single mom and signed my son up for the Scouts to get some male role-modeling. Unfortunately, the male role-models he had in his troop were more into advancing themselves and their own sons and various and sundry activities(One even tried to seduce me at summer camp!) that they lost sight of what Scouts is about. And so we left for another troop which needed a scoutmaster temporarily. Since I was trained I volunteered. I really enjoyed our monthly campouts. (We even got a cold-weather badge here in southwest Texas for camping out when the temp was below 20 all weekend--not much for snow babies, but pretty tough for us beach bums! :-)) And summer camp was awesome. My son usually went to 2 summer camps--El Rancho Cima in Texas and one at Camp Orr in Arkansas--an extremely rustic camp.

But the best things about Boy Scouts are the independence, leadership, teamwork, respect for the earth and for others, love of God and of country, and goal-setting and achievement that it teaches. I think that Girl Scouts would be better if it were modeled after the Boy Scouts. My daughter (who was often dragged along on our campouts) liked the Boy Scout program better than the Girl Scouts. And not just because of the boys!

ForeverScout, congratulations on quitting the cigarettes! I remember you mentioning them a few weeks ago.

What a fun milestone you will experience this weekend.

Praying for you...God has done so much in your life. He is faithful.

FS,

Congratulations on quitting the cigs (ie, "flaming cancer sticks of death"). That really is an accomplishment. My mother tried to quit for years and was never able to kick the habit before she died.

Hey, I hope you have a great time backpacking this weekend. I've backpacked many times and have loved every minute. It's funny, though, how after every trip you see less and less use for the "necessities". Anything that weighs more than 4 ounces becomes the enemy. Now I'm down to like one change of clothes (if that), a couple of good pairs of wool hiking socks (which are a little expensive but so worth it), of course clean undies, and a rain slicker. Good socks will run you $12-15/pair but you're dry feet will love you as they wick away moisture from your skin. Idiot that am, I made the mistake the last time we did a portion of the Appalachian Trail in VA to use hiking shoes instead of boots. Bad call when you're carrying a heavy load and your ankles absolutely scream in agony with every step after a few miles on the trail. Good times. Those shoes have been demoted to day hikes. Good ankle and arch support makes all the difference in the world. Sorry that I've turned this into a bunch of unsolicited advice, but I just love to backpack so I couldn't resist commenting. For whatever it's worth there's my $0.02.

Let us know how it went.

No offense taken and you are forgiven. When people ask me the difference between PT and OT and there is a PT around, I say the PT works with all the large muscles to make them stronger and the OT makes everything functional. I do it in jest and my PT friends know that, so Chris and Heretic, this is in jest only:-)

No problem, Diana. I love OT's. It's vital that we have SOMEONE to make sure patients can bake cookies and deal cards. :-)

No, but seriously, I used to do many co-treats with OT's when I worked in acute care and respect the work that y'all do. The main OT I used to work with is a close friend who has become like a surrogate Mom since we live so far from our families. Are you still working full-time?

Yes, Heretic, I still work full time. I work at a Kindred Hospital, a long term acute care facility in Las Vegas. Come my birthday in Nov, God willing, I would like to drop to 30 hours per week.
I really like doing co tx with PTs.

Aren't OTs the ones that get our patients showered, dressed, and setup with clean dentures so that we can walk them? :-)

Christopher A. Lee, PT, MSPT

P.S. I'm totally joking. I manage OTs as well and respect them very much. The PT and OT departments work together very well and our pts. benefit greatly from such close collaborative teamwork.

Yea, and if we did not get them up you would walk them with their back side showing and hungry, because their dentures were not in when the food was there:-)
I can take as well as I can give.
I am joking also, because I really do like the PTs with whom I work. We do our evals together and it is much easier on the patient.

Diana, there are many days that I could use a therapist that would make me functional. Maybe I have been looking for the wrong type of therapist. You folks are all great and I appreciate everyone of you. Randy

Well I am back and I DID IT! I REALLY DID IT! I was slower than everyone else by about 15 minutes, but I still got up that mountain. I climbed Palomar Mountain in San Diego, CA!!!

I think we started at about 765 or 865 ft up, we climbed to about 3785 ft the first night in three and one half miles, that was a killer, the temperature was in the 80's. But we camped on the side of the mountain just off the road and the sunset was amazing!

On Saturday morning we started at 7:00am and hiked for seven and one half miles to reach 5200 ft, it only took us two and one half hours to finish. It wasn't as hard because the last half went down into the valley and was in the treeline. At one point a gigantic tree fell across the trail and we had to climb first under and then over it to get back to the trail.

Gosh, it was absolutely beautiful up there. I betcha God lives in the mountains. I saw a huge Incense Ceder, so big I could not get the whole thing into a picture. It made me think of the Ceders of Lebanon. So many wildflowers! We saw deer. I saw a wild turkey.

I am sore today, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Everytime I want a cigarette, I will think of this weekend. Do you know what, I was the oldest person there!

Thank you everyone for your prayers! Thank you Heretic for all your really good advice. I already had some good "SmartWool" socks. And I have some good well worked in boots, lots of support, very comfortable. I didn't bring anything really unnescessary, it just ended up being too warm for my long underwear. And I didn't eat as much food as I thought I would, I could have left some of it at home. I do wish that I had purchased a lighter weight bowl and cup than the rubbermaid set that I carried, too many ounces. I will also think of other creative ways to lighten my load. I haven't had a chance to weigh it, but I am sure it was at least 35 pounds. Probably though the water counts for most of the weight, we didn't see water for quite a while, I drank the 70 ounces in my camelback before I saw a stream.

Dr.Patti, I am wholheartedly for Girls into Boy Scouts, it's called Venture Crew, co-educational, I believe she can start at 15 years old, check it out with your council. My daughter is a Senior Girl Scout in 11th grade, but she intends on joining Venture Crew just to be able to backpack with the Troop. She wants more adventure than the girls in her troop do.

Again I thank everyone here for being my support, I could really feel your prayers with me when I was on that mountain.

Foreverscout,

That's so great that your trip was so enjoyable and personally fulfilling. Yes, it is amazing how fast you start thinking of ways to minimize weight once you start backpacking. I've been up to area around Mt. Palomar and you're right it's absolutely gorgeous.

Congratulations on your accomplishment!

Hi Colleen, I found your question. The backpack was incredible! I think everyone should try it at least once, some places you can't camp in except you backpack to it. And it's just so gorgeous up in those mountains. I just think that the outdoors is my first cathedral.

Despite the smell of the Bengay that I am rubbing in, and all the Advil I am taking, I can't wait to go again and again and again!

Some exciting news. Tonight I got to sit in on several "Board of Reviews", (that's where Boy Scouts going up in rank are interviewed). And then later the Scoutmaster asked me to haul out my old uniform and gave me an Asst. Scoutmaster Patch for it! I wasn't expecting to be asked, I only took the training so that I could help out with campouts and other trips. And I didn't even get to finish the training because my friend went into labor and I went to help her deliver her baby. But he asked and I feel so honored, I'm one of the guys again! God sure is good to this girl.

Oh Lord, make me ever worthy of this responsibility.

Scout, congratulations on the "patch". You seem to have really earned it. I used to love hiking and camping but not sure I'm up to the hiking part of it, but I still enjoy wandering through nature. I also love to photograph in nature. This spring it was so beautiful with all the wild flowers out in the desert with our record spring rains.

Congratulations again, Scout! God has prepared in advance this work He's bringing you--isn't it awesome? When we finally trust Him, He brings all kinds of unexpected ways to serve into our lives, and He equips us for them Himself.

He is so faithful!
