Did any of the rest of you get an aha when you saw the interview of Tom Cruise by Matt Lauer? We all know that Tom is a member of the cult of Scientology, and that he has appointed himself the propriety police for other actors/actresses. For any of the rest of you, did Tom's reaction to Matt's questions about Brooke Shields remind you of some of the Adventists in your lives? Just wondering.

I believe that Tom Cruise's response was very cultic and very familiar to the response I have received from Adventists' since leaving the Church. Hard to believe that so many have taken their minds to a dark place that cannot be reached. It is hard to remember that many of us who left the Adventist Church at one time bought into this type of dogmatism. Blessings.

Welcome Dfry to FAF! It is indeed great to be free from the bondage of the dogmatism of Adventism.

Welcome Dfry! I'm looking forward to getting to "know" you.

I saw that Tom Cruise interview and it was really scary to see his attitude and beliefs. What damage he can do to those who will take his word as valid! He exhibited so much hate. His demeanor was really wierd, almost like he was being controlled. I've been feeling quite shook up since seeing that - don't know why, except maybe to realize that there are really people out there who believe all that.

I have run into "fundamentalist" Christians and Adventists who don't believe in psychology or anti-depressent drugs. I've seen and felt the criticism. But Cruise's attitude was almost zombie like, very self-centered and judgemental. I can't quite put my finger on it except to think he is possessed. And I don't say that about everything I don't agree with!

Scientology has really got a hold on "Hollywood". And to think how much influence that will have on others is scary and sad. But Satan knows what works! I hope those in Hollywood who believe differently will be vocal about it, like the Passion movie. That reached so many people. I hope there can be more "big" movies that can show something better, and that more Movie Stars will speak out against things like Scientology.

I didn't see it - my daughter saw his interview on "Oprah" and said he exhibited some strange behaviors there, too. As much as I don't want to admit it, there is some value in the fact that we weren't allowed to see any movies growing up - it has taken me a lot longer to get 'desensitized' to the violence and stuff in movies, and I still am very picky. I have a little catch in my spirit when I see Christians 'use' the movies as illustrations (Wild at Heart retreats, etc.) I get the concept and agree it can be useful, but the down side is that we buy into the idolization of Hollywood as a source for inspiration. it can be a slippery slope.

When I think about the movie industry and its influence, I always think of a friend of ours who has an amazing ministry. Our friend's name is Larry Poland. He was (years ago) the senior pastor at our church, Trinity Evangelical Free, and he and his wife also founded, with another couple, Arrowhead Christian Academy where I taught and from where our boys graduated.

Larry left pastoring in the early 90s to pursue his ministry full time. It's called Master Media, and it's based in Redlands. Larry and a small number of associates who also work with him have spent the last 15 or more years nurturing relationships with the directors, board members, administrators, etc., of the major media corporations including both television networks and movie studios. In addition, they often function as advocates for Christian actors or actresses in the industry. They have a presence in New York as well as Hollywood, and they also have representatitves in India and Australia.

Long story short--this ministry is resulting (and results take years, often--not surprisingly) in many people at high levels of management in the entertainment industry hearing the gospel and accepting Jesus. This venue is DIFFICULT to penetrate. At the management levels there are high percentages of secular Jews who value their heritage but have no religious life. There are also many people who have "sold out" to making money and ammassing power.

Larry and his ministry is one of the missions our local church sponsors, and usually one Sunday every summer, he gives the sermon and illustrates it with stories from the contacts and he has had and the changed lives he has witnessed.

Larry has commented on the dangers of scientology and other "new age" spiritual experiments.

I pray for Larry and his wife and his ministryóit's not one that you'll probably hear about much, but it is powerful and is reaping results for the Kingdom.

I guess that's why it always lights a fire under me when I read SDA references to the rest of Christianity as "new age". I still have a Review article that said something to the affect that "our" beliefs were based upon "spiritualism" and "the new age movement". I also kept the letter to the editor where at least one SDA protested the insinuation non-SDA Christians were just spiritualists/new agers. I know B used to say "our" beliefs came from the new age movement. It's hard not to get a little bit animated when such statements are made as passing fact.

Unfortunately, the DVD market can satisfy those afraid to go to the theater. Even "uncensored" versions for those wanting a little more skin, if you will.

It is amazing how easily deceptive information can be mixed with truth and everyone feels all better. I too saw Cruise's interview and I hurt for him and his bride to be. I realized at that moment how much I took for granted...being free I mean. Here I was being angry for the way the Lord chose to bring me to Him and not once recognizing the depth of freedom. Cruise and all of Hollywood (not to mention the world in general) need our prayers. Let us praise God together for being able to see. Sight is precious and I am overflowing with gratitude on today - because I now see! Hallelujah!!!

The sad part is how Americans tend to look to celebrities as their mentors for issues about religion, politics and other topics rather than seeking out the truth in the Bible.

So true, Pw.

Shontay, I am so happy to "hear" you praising God today! Rejoicing in all things really is the first step to experiencing His faithfulness and blessing. I have to keep remembering this small but potent fact.

This just arrived in my e-mail--the Today show had Katie Curic interview Dr Steve Sharfstein, president of the American psychiatric Association and a distingueshed psychiatrist and Dr. Glen Mullen to gain a professional perspective on the topic. Read more about Tome Cruise's interview by visiting www.nbc.com click on programming and the Today Show and then on the War of the Worlds interview, at the bottom of the screen is an option to review the interview related to scientology and psychiatry.
Also and opportunity to vote on whether Tom Cruise should be speaking out against psychiatry and you can include your vote and you will learn the vote results thus far. now at 69% voted that Tom Cruise should not speak out against psychiatry and that he is just plain wrong. Thought you might find this of interest.
I don't know how to make the link on this forum
to NBC, sorry.

Does that mean we won't be seeing Tom on Dr. Phil? :-) (I don't know if he's a psychologist or psychiatrist, but they run in similar circles...it's a joke, really!)

I read the Tom Cruise interview and wow! All I can say is...we need to pray for Katie Holmes. It also reminded me of my old attitude (before I was released) of the Sabbath, state of the dead, health message...I thought I had special knowledge and knew it all. Did you notice Tom's attitude...like he knew so much more then Matt and he knew the "truth" about psychiatry! It's all in black and white in a cult. When I was SDA, I thought in "black and white" now I see there is a lot of gray and that is what we have to trust God in, the gray areas! We won't know it all until we get to heaven...we must take it on faith.

Pheeki, I like what you said--"We won't know it all until we get to heaven...we must take it on faith."

That statement seems increasingly true to me.

Taybie, I'm praising God that you're praising God!

Hurray Shontay! What a wonder. What a breakthrough. Keep a memory of this moment like a treasure in your heart, because when hard times come again, and they will, you will have a light to help guide you through. Isn't Jesus our Lord wonderful!
