I just spent some time reading the R/S link posted above...I am at a loss for words. All I can say is I praise my Father for getting me out of that cauldron of confusion. Doesn't Babylon mean confusion? Interesting.

Related to the definition of assurance that Dennis gave, I think the term "hope" should also be included in the list (if it hasn't been added already). For SDAs, their "hope" is not the Biblical "hope" of a know-so, confident assurance, but it is instead a "maybe, I hope so..." kind of "hope."

Jeremy,
Thanks for confirming dark county at R/S with that link.

I agree, Pheeki, that webmasters response to terms like Philistines and "dark coounties" was scary.

Another term with meaning, "following the blueprint", usually in relationship to SDA schools with regard to EGW's writings of course as being the blueprint.

Thanks so much for adding more vocab words to the list. Dennis, I loved your three succinct words and definitions. I admit that "davenport" actually made me laugh--I hadn't thought of it's being a "couch" in a long time, and then to see the word defined as you defined it just made the confusion of it hit home.

And Jeremy, "hope" is a good one.

When I was young and new in the SDA church, I heard "follow the blueprint" [meaning, obey "EGW to the letter"]so much that being reminded of it today by Stan almost made me ill!

Now I intend to follow only Jesus, and His will as revealed in SCRIPTURE ALONE!

How about the way Adventists use the words "the truth". meaning, of course Adventist Doctrine, not God's word. I remember hearing that people who left the SDA denomination had 'left the truth' or if they got baptized they 'found the truth'.
Or how about terms like 'time of trouble' - is that code for 'tribulation' now?
How about when SDA's use the term 'the body of Christ'? I don't think it means what they think it means. ;-)
or - useing the term Holy Spirit or 'spiritual gifts' - it seems like a lot of the time we were kinda afraid of the term Holy Spirit, or anything with the word 'spirit' in it, for that matter.
Also, I've found many evangelicals use the term 'rapture' to refer to the second coming, not to the secret rapture which SDA's assume they mean.
How about the term 'worship'? in my home it meant reading from EGW or the Bible for a while and then maybe prayer. Sometimes it included a song or two. Evangelicals tend to use the term mostly for the musical portion of praise. Or even the term 'praise'?
That's just a few that come to mind. I've been out of the SDA loop mostly for a few years now, so things might have changed some. Some of my family is still enmeshed in it and some are not so much, seem to be starting to question things - praise God for that.
I agree that our only hope of reaching SDA's who are seeking is 'not by power, nor by might, but by My Spirit'!! Thankfully the battle belongs to God.

Melissa,

Admittedly, the word "davenport" is not in common usage these days. However, the New Merriam-Webster Dictionary still defines it as "a large upholstered sofa." Apparently, it cannot be a love seat (smile).

Many years ago, Sylvia and I invited an unchurched lady (a client) to hear Morris Venden preach at the College View SDA Church. This was shortly after the Davenport financial scandal. In Venden's introductory remarks, he lamented that many "Adventists were still sitting on their davenports." Immediately, the SDA audience responded with laughter. Our friend could not understand the humor in that at all. She thought he was somehow vilifying those who comfortably rested on their sofas. Yes, we did inform her of this in-house terminology.

How about "Truth filled Literature" and speaking of literature the SDA's are compiling 10 of "Pope" Ellen's books into a new one called "Connecting with Jesus" They are going to place 2 million copies globally. The article said that the project came into being because of the quote "apparent decline in readership of these volumes". Big woopie doo. I couldn't stand to read anything she ever wrote and I can understand why no one else reads the stuff. Dry nonsence. Some other adjectives also come to mind, but I will refrain. It will be just another book for the shelf.

Melissa,
I really listened to what you said about protecting your family.
Since being in the church that I am I have met many people and all know about my background as an SDA. Some of my friends are single women and I have warned them about SDAs and what they believe. I do that to protect them, not to vilify the SDAs. One said, "If I meet a nice SDA man, I will turn and run".
I do not want anyone to be hurt like you have been. I know it has been hard on you, seeing as the person is still a part of your life. So I will continue to pray for him.
God is taking care of you.

Richard,

I do understand your point.

Anything not edifying is really pointless. Not saying that it may not be edifying to someone, but I see that we do sort of poke fun, at least I do, and the Holy Spirit has been convicting me of it lately, so thanks for standing up and stating your convictions.

Praying peace for you,
Sabra

Wow, Chris, there's another term right there. They refer to the SDA church as "the family of God"!

Has anybody said "gospel"?

SDAs: Jesus + Sabbath = salvation
EGW SDA's: Jesus + Sabbath + EGW's spirit of prophecy = salvation
Bible: Jesus alone = salvation
