I found these testimonies impressive and wanted to share them as we celebrate our double Independence, as a Nation and as sinners saved by the blood of Christ. ... Jess

Roger Sherman, Signer of the Declaration of Independence:

"I believe that there is one only living and true God, existing in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the same in substance equal in power and glory. That the Scriptures of the Old and New testaments are a revelation from God and a complete rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy HimÖ. I believe that the souls of believers are at their death made perfectly holy and immediately taken to glory: that at the end of this world there will be a resurrection of the dead and a final judgment of all mankind when the righteous shall be publicly acquitted by Christ the Judge and admitted to everlasting life and glory, and the wicked be sentenced to everlasting punishment."

John Witherspoon, Signer of the Declaration of Independence:

"I shall now conclude my discourse by preaching this Savior to all who hear me, and entreating you in the most earnest manner to believe in Jesus Christ, for "there is no salvation in any other" (Acts 4:12)Ö. If you are not reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, if you are not clothed with the spotless robe of His righteousness, you must forever perish."

"Whoever is an avowed enemy of God, I scruple not to call him an enemy to his country."

John Quincy Adams, sixth President and Signer of the Declaration of Independence:

"The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government and the principles of Christianity."

"The birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked to the birthday of the Savior . . . the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer's mission upon earth . . . it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity."

Samuel Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence:

"May every citizen in the army and in the country have a proper sense of the Deity upon his mind and an impression of the declaration recorded in the Bible, 'Him that honoreth me I will honor, but he that despiseth me shall be lightly esteemed' [1 Samuel 2:30]."

"The Supreme Ruler of the Universe, having been pleased in the course of His providence to establish the independence of the United States of America...we ought to be led by religious feelings of gratitude and to walk before Him in all humility according to His most holy law...That with true repentance and contrition of heart we may unitedly implore the forgiveness of our sins through the merits of Jesus Christ and humbly supplicate our heavenly Father." (in proclaiming a Day of Public Fasting, Humiliation, and Prayer, 1795)

Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence:

"Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure...are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

Benjamin Rush, Signer of the Declaration of Independence (and father of the public school system):

"My only hope of salvation is in the infinite transcendent love of God manifested to the world by the death of his Son upon the Cross. Nothing but his blood will wash away my sins. I rely exclusively upon it. Come, Lord Jesus! Come quickly!"

Jess, thanks for sharing these inspiring quotes. Some of them are surprising in their directness and faith.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Gal. 5:1).

Jess,
Those are amazing quotes. How I wish we had that type of moral and doctrinal clarity today as those men did! Now, leaders who bring Christ into the public square are ridiculed. President Bush has been ridiculed for openly expressing his faith. He even admitted to reading Oswald Chambers "My Utmost For His Highest", and was made fun of. How different this country is now, than when our founders had their vision for this country.

Stan,

I have no doubt, but in my imagination, I picture many of our "founding fathers" weeping if they could see the shift that has taken place in the hour glass of time.

Oh for a true Statesman today, eh?

It has come to my attention that John Quency Adams did not sign the Declaration of Independence. If he did, he would have been 9 years old. I apologize for this error. I copied that which was sent to me.

Adams, John Quincy, 1767ñ1848, 6th President of the United States (1825ñ29),

I think on this 4th of July weekend we should turn our attention to special prayer for our country, and for our leaders. I think of the troops in Iraq, with that body armor on in 130 degree heat, we pray for the safety of all of our Armed Forces. We should also be in prayer for President Bush, as he is challenged with the task of choosing a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor, who resigned. So much in the way of the values that we as Christians stand for is being challenged, and let's pray that the President will pick the right person for the job. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Another AMEN to Stan's comments.
In SDA school I learned that our Founding Fathers did not claim Christianity. I can see why now.
Thank God for our Founding Fathers and their faith which they proclaimed for posterity.

Thank you Jess for these awesome quotes, I've just read them out loud to my children. I've often explained to them the original intentions behind the "separation of church and state" and how it has become so skewed; but this has truly brought it home for them! This is a very large part of what they need to know and understand in order to vote responsibly with heart and head.

It's very important for us to know our past and what these great men intended, because we have been led astray in these last decades, and it is up to us to get back on track. We must educate first ourselves and then our children. Those of you who have involved yourself in your children's public education already know what kind of indoctrination they are receiving, I work daily to counter it in my own children so that they know the truth.

So again, Thank you so very much, you have blessed us greatly!
