Wow--I can't believe the words of this SDA song, which is from an SDA book we have called Happy Songs For Boys and Girls, published by the Review and Herald Publishing Association in 1952. The song is "True Temperance Boys and Girls" and it's by Martha W. Howe.

Take a look:

quote:

1.

True temp'rance boys and girls are we.

We're trying hard as hard can be

To learn health habits in our youth,

For 'tis a part of God's great truth.

We join our hearts and join our hands,

And stand a true and loyal band.

From all bad habits we will flee,

For temp'rance boys and girls are we.

CHORUS. (after first, third, and last stanzas only)

Temp'rance boys and girls are we--temp'rance boys, temp'rance girls;

Temp'rance boys and girls are we; always true we mean to be.

2.

We know our bodies must be clean,

Inside as well as what is seen,

And so we take deep breaths of air,

Which lies about us everywhere;

And then we drink at least a glass

Of water pure--each lad and lass--

Four times each day, and not at meals;

And soon we find how good it feels!

3.

We wash our hands before we eat,

Our fingernails keep short and neat;

Our teeth we brush both morn and eve,

And praise for gifts that we receive.

With windows open wide at night,

We sleep long hours till morning light.

These things will make and keep us well.

This message we delight to tell.

4.

We try to stand up straight and tall,

And not let shoulders droop or fall,

To walk on toes instead of heels,

And not to eat between our meals;

This last is hardest, we all think;

Instead of eating take a drink.

The stomach must have time to rest,

Then for us all 'twill do its best.

5.

And when its time to go to school,

To study hard, obey the rule,

We'll have clear minds to get our tasks

And do the things the teacher asks.

The health work is the ent'ring wedge,

And 'round our path a shelt'ring hedge;

'Twill help us choose the right from wrong

And make us good as well as strong.

(Lyrics copied from http://www.temkit.com/Temkit/temkit_2-4.htm and edited to fit the lyrics found in Happy Songs For Boys and Girls.)

So walking on my toes instead of my heels will help to make me a righteous person???!!

LOL!!!

This is the wackiest nonsense I've ever read--but then again, most of it just comes from Ellen and it follows her line of reasoning...!

This reminds me of a song that I found posted here on FAF from awhile back called "The Smoking and Chewing Song."

Here is Steve's post from a couple years back, with the lyrics to that song:

While unpacking a box today, I found my copy of:

Advent Singing: A collection of fifty early Adventist hymns.

I haven't read them all, but I'm wondering, did EGW ever write a hymn? If so, what was it about?

The following "hymn" makes me wonder about what "god" these people were singing to.

I'll post the three stanzas and follow with the chorus.

SMOKING AND CHEWING SONG

Chewing in the parlor, Smoking in the street,
Choking with cigar smoke, Everyone you meet;
Spitting on the pavement, Spitting on the floor.
Is there such enslavement? Is there such a bore?

[This next stanza is GROSS!]

Puddles in the corners, Swelling into one,
Forming lakes and rivers, Drying in the sun.
Maidens never marry Men who smoke or chew!
If they use tobacco, They will never do.

Many carry spices, Cinnamon and cloves,
Make use of your eyesight, Make use of your nose;
For when you are married, Spice they throw away;
And your loving husband Smokes and chews all day.

CHORUS

Chewing! Smoking! Spitting! Choking!
Sending clouds a whirling in everybody's face.
Chewing in the parlor, Spitting on the floor,
Is there such enslavement? Is there such a bore?
___________________________________________________

When I'm in church, I'd prefer to sing about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, or at least sing to Them.

Who were these early SDAs singing to in this song?

I guess I shouldn't say "early SDAs." Although it was written in 1880, it is set to an arrangement written in 1988!

Steve

Oh, I forgot to mention that that temperance song is under the section "SONGS OF JESUS" in Happy Songs For Boys and Girls.

It all seems outrageous now, but I remember singing the temperance song in Pathfinders. How about the rest of you? The "smoking, chewing, spitting" song is a real hoot! Sort of reminds me of the old phrase "Lips that touch wine will never touch mine."

This was posted back in 2000 by Dennis Rainwater and I thought this was the perfect time and place for a reprisal. If you're familiar with Veggie Tales, you'll like this. Here goes:

quote:

Are you seeking a denominationally correct video series for you or your children? Well, have we got a show for you! No longer will you have to put up with vegetables that engage in frivolous activities such as dancing oh horrors!) or endure trivial, meaningless non-character-building songs about missing hairbrushes or water buffaloes. Now there is a positive alternative for family viewing enjoyment.

New from SmallIdeaProductions...it's...Vegemeat Tales! Through the wonders of computer-generated animation, your favorite meat analogs come to Life as lovable animated characters, rendered With realistic, life-life detail!

They sing, they march (of course they don't Dance; these are Adventist videos!), they play Rook, and much, much more!

Join Larry Linkette and his friends - Fanny J. Frichick, Wilma Wham, Charlie Choplet, Sam Skallop, Tom Turkette, Nancy Nuteena, and Susie
special K Loaf - in their stirring, character-building reenactments of the popular "Uncle Arthur Bedtime Stories" and "Your Story Hour" series. Plus, the end of each tape includes the stirring segment, "Temperance Tunes with Fanny J. Frichick," which feature songs like, "We Don't Smoke and We Don't Chew and We Don't Go Out with Girls That Do."

"Vegemeat Tales is putting good taste into good computer-animated nutrition!" --Worthington Foods Employee Newsletter

"Low in cholesterol, low in fat, high in fun!"
--Loma Linda Medical Center Dietary Department Bulletin

"'Temperance Tunes with Fanny J. Frichick' are so badly needed by today's youth!" --Society to Bring Back the Old Hymnal

Order your video collection today - a must-have for Pathfinder clubs, Sabbath school classes, and kids who have parents that nap all day on Sabbath. Available in your local ABC and in select health food stores across the country.

Heretic,
Thanks for re-posting that. I loved it.

Jeremy and Belva,
Yes, I remember singing that Temperance song so many times in grade school and Pathfinders. Now, in hindsight, with most of my bitterness removed 40 years later, I actually have many good memories singing those songs. Jeremy, there is actually some good health advice in that song, that does not hurt kids to know. The only problem I see, as you indicate is equating good health to pleasing God. And in Adventism, that is how it was taught.

Thanks for the laugh, Jeremy! I remember singing "Temp'rance boys and girls are we" many times as a kid in Sabbath School, and can remember the tune clearly. But the only words I remember is the chorus.

The Temperance Song! I remember singing that! (In fact, I can still sing the first verse by memory--how's that for imprinting?!) Ha!

Such a heritage we all share...

We used to sing the "Chewing Smoking Spitting" song in grade school. We'd have songs every worship in the mornings...and of course it wasn't very "cool" to sing and so the guys liked this song cause it was the "rebelous one".

Praise God my kids will never be subjected to this:-)

It gives me the creeps! I wasn't raised SDA, and so can't remember singing songs in church that didn't have to do with Jesus. Basically, if the song doesn't have to do with Jesus, then what is the point, especially in church!
