After my wife and I left Adventism, we got rid of most of our EGW books. Can someone help me confirm that a quote I came across, is indeed, accurate and says the heresy that I see in it. It is as follows.

"Failure to critically examine our beliefs," she warns (EGW), "will prompt the Lord to introduce heresies into the church in order to compel believers to grow."
(EGW, "Testimonies for the Church, Volume 5" pp 707,708)

I know I've heard discussion on this before but I had never actually seen and read that particular quote. I read this quote in the Southern Columns magazine for SAU. It was in an article written by the Academic Dean, Steve Pawluk.

If someone could confirm that this quote is accurate and not taken out context from the actual book, I'd appreciate it.

Yes, I know, how can blasphemy be taken out of context.

Thanks,
Mike

The full paragraph is

quote:

God will arouse His people; if other means fail, heresies will come in among them, which will sift them, separating the chaff from the wheat. The Lord calls upon all who believe His word to awake out of sleep. Precious light has come, appropriate for this time. It is Bible truth, showing the perils that are right upon us. This light should lead us to
a diligent study of the Scriptures and a most critical examination of the positions which we hold. God would have all the bearings and positions of truth thoroughly and perseveringly searched, with prayer and fasting. Believers are not to rest in suppositions and ill-defined ideas of what constitutes truth. Their faith must be firmly founded upon the word of God so that when the testing time shall come and they are brought before councils to answer for their faith they may be able to give a reason for the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. (5T 707.3)

Personally I'm not convinced that this quote proves that EGW taught that it the Lord will introduce heresies into the church. I saw it more as a statement that when people do not study the Word of God and know the reasons for their beliefs heresy will result.

If you look at what she said, and make us, the FAFers, be the wheat, then we are doing just what she predicted we would do -- diligent study of the Scriptures and critical examination of the positions which we hold.

I was looking a little while ago at a discussion being engaged in on S/R about the bridegroom, and what exactly is/was the midnight cry. I saw a lot of EW quotes, but very little scripture. Those who are continuing to study the EW books for their spiritual enlightenment are lightly skiping over scriptural study.

Thanks Ric for providing that clarification. I see your point. It could be read both ways depending on what you get out of it. It fact, the Adventist quoting it did not quote it accurately and made EGW to say something worse than she normally does. That is why I like to check things out. I don't like to go off half cocked and use these types of quotes inapporpriately. Although EGW weaved mis-truth into her work, I don't want to pursue counter arguments based on equally falty material.

Belvalew thanks for your input, as well.

Mike
