I did a search on this forum and noticed that nothing is written about this book, author and testimony. I had some thoughts on it. My husband, who has been Southern Baptist over the years, said he would have never fallen for adventism and felt that someone who was saved wouldn't. Although he does know that he was deceived by them having gone to studies and church with me in that they did lie, there was a little dust in his eyes. I showed him this testimony and shared with him that I thought that Russell Earl Kelly, did not have the whole armor of God*, the truth, and therefore fell for the wiles of the devil. The hook in evangelizing adventism, the Sabbath. That is where all the brainwashing begins. The devil knows how to deceive. And this further confirms to me deceptiveness of the adventist church. Adventist leaders will say anything to win converts.

But, upon looking at the links on his website, I saw that he has a Ph.D. and he is an Elvis impersonator. My first thought, there goes that guys testimony, nobody will take him seriously now, neither a current or former adventist.

When I emailed this link http://www.home.earthlink.net/~russkellyphd/elvis/ to my well educated, Christ loving husband, he said, that is funny, what a multi-talented guy. He does "free" concerts for nearby churches as well.

Haven't most adventists been indoctrinated to go beyond the simple things? Can we just have fun and find Jesus in everything we do?

Are we in the simple truth, truth that all can grasp, that is in the Love of Jesus?

Theologically speaking, adventist leaders want their flock to believe former adventists and other Christians are simple. You know, those pharisaical, well trained and or/educated adventist leaders. Am I concerned mostly about what others might think of me. We never really had to speak of Jesus as adventists did we. Wasn't that sort of a relief? It was to me. I only got persecuted for eating Big Franks, not Jesus...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew anything more about this guy and his new book and if there were any thoughts about him from former adventists here in this forum.

* The Armor of God - Ephesians 6:10-18
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also (John 15:20).

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived (2 Timothy 3:12-13).

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10-12).

Lynne, Thanks for the links. No, I had never heard of him before, and I scanned thru a lot of his material and it looks good.

It has to be our SDA background that would make us think about the fact that being an Elvis impersonator would "ruin our testimony". If it does ruin a testimony, then that testimony is worth ruining in my opinion. The same goes for other so-called forbidden activities that have no Biblical basis.

But Mr. Kelly's major point is valid. There is so much bad theology about the ten commandments with no clear idea in a lot of churches about what is new covenant teaching that a lot of people are sucked into Adventism, because frankly the SDA position is more consistent if you believe in the ten commandments.

Actually, I have heard of this book; someone sent it to usóactually, I think it might have been the authoróand Richard has been reading it. He says it's really good. (He's been reading it while I've been reading Elmer Wiebe's book, "Who Is the Adventist Jesus?")

Before the book arrived in the mail, however, I'd never heard of it.

I had read his comments on tithe and didn't even realize he was a former SDA when I had pointed out the link to my wife. BTW, it is a very good article on tithing (I guess he has a whole book, but the summary is good itself).

Ric,

I have Dr. Kelly's book (Copyright 2000), "Should the Church Teach Tithing: A Theologian's Conclusion about a Taboo Doctrine," in my library. We have exchanged correspondence in recent years. Interestingly, the publisher of the book is located here in Lincoln, Nebraska.
