Many of you are familiar with John Piper-author of "Desiring God" and his website www.desiringgod.org On Jan. 31, 2006, Piper presented this absolutely amazing, inspiring, and at times sad story of William Tyndale-one of the truly great heroes of the faith. Every once in awhile, it is good to get a historical perspective of those pioneers of the faith that we owe such a debt of gratitude.

Tyndale, in particular rates at the top of the list. He was responsible for first translating the New Testament into every day English so the common man could understand. He was a Catholic priest, who read works of Martin Luther such as "Bondage of the Will", and understood along with Luther that salvation was all of grace, and that we are declared righteous solely on the merits of Christ's righteousness.

The King of England, and the Roman Catholic church was adamantly opposed to the Bible getting into the hands of the people. They knew that the great truths Paul taught were opposed to their system. They knew that their religious system would be in danger if the people could study the Bible for themselves.

I had not reviewed the history of the Reformation in quite awhile. This is a great review of the sacrificial lives these pioneers of the faith led, and to see how many great saints were brutally murdered and burned at the stake by the Roman Catholic Church. If you have ever been favorably disposed to Catholicism, it would be impossible after reading this article, and realize that they really haven't changed, as they have never repudiated the Council of Trent which denounced all these great men of God as heretics--which even the current pope has re-affirmed.

I think I can see parallels as well between the SDA church, and the way they have "martyred" their challengers, and to those who tried to uphold the basic truths of the Reformation. For so long, the SDA church was successful in repressing men like Canright, Ballenger, Conradi etc. They even were mildly sucessful in suppressing for awhile what happened at Glacier View. But now with the explosion of information on the internet, it is hard to do. In this Piper article on Tyndale, you can see the roots of SDA liberalism in Erasmus writings that are outlined in this article.

William Tyndale, was really the beginning of the information age with the first translation of the Bible into English. We are grateful to him for his legacy. He died a horrible death at the hands of Catholicism, but just notice his gentle spirit and faith even while he was in prison awaiting this horrible death.

Stan,

Thank you very much for the link. I will enjoy reading this and learning about Tyndale.

I always had a beautiful large Catholic bible on the shelf when I was growing up that my grandmother gave me. I never really read it, I just looked at the pictures.

I didn't take that bible with me when I left home. I later became interested in knowing what the bible said. I prayed and went to a Christian book store to buy a bible. I searched for an easy to read bible. I remember searching many bibles and getting a Tyndale. It served me well, I enjoyed it and read it a lot. Then I went to the Adventist church as they were supposed to help me understand it more.

Stan,

Thanks for the heads up on the Tyndale biography. I also see that Pasor Piper has an update on his cancer surgery. He will be in my prayers.

I listened to a few of his sermons this past week while I was out of town (high speed internet is a WONDERFUL thing!) and really enjoyed not only his messages but also his humility and plain speaking. It is amazing that he has been preaching to his congregation from the book of Romans since 1999! I heard him say that his congregation has doubled or tripled in size during that period.

What a powerful testimony to what the Word of God can do!

Yes, we need to keep John Piper in our prayers as he undergoes cancer surgery in a couple of weeks. Fortunately, it looks like it is contained, but still radical prostatectomy is major surgery. But he has a grand view of God's sovereignty in all this. But he sure gave an inspiring talk on Tyndale.

I printed off the short bio of Tyndale that was on the desiringgod.org website. I learned much that I had not been aware of before about this devout man of God!

What a powerful witness his life is that we should stand for the right! We have no idea how far-reaching our influence could be.

For those of you who are fans of John Piper, he is apparently recovering nicely from his cancer surgery. This is what he posted on the night before his surgery, an article called "Don't waste your cancer", and he reflects on God's purposes and will with regard to things that happen in our lives that are not pleasant. www.desiringgod.org/library/fresh_words/2006/021506.html
