Stan,
Several months ago you and others mentioned a biography about Martin Luther. Can you tell me what the name of the book is and who the author is?
thanks! Right now I'm reading The Bondage of the Will.
Thanks!
Leigh

Hi Leigh,
Congratulations for reading "Bondage of the Will". It is heavy reading, but so well worth it. And if you have J.I. Packer's version, in the intro I was very surprised where Packer said that the doctrine of the bondage of the will was the very foundational doctrine on which evangelical Christianity stands or falls--even more important than Justification by Faith alone! I never thought about it that way. Luther has been quoted as saying something to the effect that if 'free-will contributes in any way--even in the slightest to our salvation, we know nothing of grace.' Rom. 11:5,6 does support this--'there is a remnant chosen by grace--and if at all by works, then grace is no longer grace'.

There are a lot of good Luther biographies. One I have read recently is called "Martin Luther-A guided tour of his life and thoughts" by Stephen J. Nichols published by P and R publishing.

Dennis, I think recommends Roland Bainton's biography which I believe may be one of the best. Maybe Ric_b or Cathy2 has some suggestions as well.

Stan, the copy that I am reading of "Bondage of the Will" is by J.I. Packer. I am still on the introduction. I couldn't find the book by Stephen Nichols in our library system, but I did find and place a hold on the book "Here I Stand: A life of Martin Luther" by Roland Bainton.
thanks!
Leigh
