I was having a discussion with a friend of mine (actually, one of the few SDAs that will still talk to me since I am now a dangerous heretic...) and I mentioned that the 'day for a year' basis of understanding prophetic time had absolutely no basis in Scripture.

To this he replied that some theologian (SDA) had written a new book that claims that there are 125 texts (it could be 145 texts, I can't remember) that support the SDA understanding of 'a day = a year in Bible prophecy).

My response was 'no way! That is a desperate attempt to try and bolster a doctrine that has no Scriptural support. If there were in fact 125 texts that support the doctrine, we would have marched them out years ago'.

I wondered if any of you might have heard of this argument before...

There are some texts that you can find say this (or seem to imply this)(one example here: Ezekiel 4:6
"After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the house of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.) - the problem is application of those text willy nilly throughout the Bible on all prophecies when ever you feel like it. There are MANY Adventists that will tell you that the day for a year is shaky at best in many of the applications that it is used in.

It is my understanding that if the day-for-a-year equation is applicable, the prophecy itself will make mention of it. In other words, each prophecy includes its own key. Another place where the day-fo-a-year equation is appropriate is the 70 weeks given in Daniel 9. We were never meant to be left in the dark regarding the Lord's prophecies.

InSearchOf: I have an SDA friend who was wondering about the IJ, and I sent her a copy of "The Sanctuary Doctrine Asset or Liability" by Dr. Raymond F Cottrell,
he died a respected SDA and so I thought she might read it. We are getting together to discuss it further. If you print it out add page numbers so you can find things, on page 35 he discuss how the 23rd Fundamental Belief should read. www.jesusinstituteforum.org/assetorliability.html
and in note 103 he explains the day for a year in
Ezekial also on page 35 STarts on page 30. But that is the only lext he mentions. This might help.

I might add that this Sda friend read on AToday "A report from Sydney Australia Adventist Forum Remembered Glacier View Twenty-Five years later" Doesn't have much to do with a day for a year, but it did shake up some people in the SDA church!

Dear Insearchof, I had this sanme discussion recently with SDA kin. I was told that when the word 'day' in used for a future prophecy it always means a year but when the word 'day' is used in past tense such as the creation story the word 'day' means a literal 24 hours time period. Is that making it about as clear as mud?
