I just learned from my parents in Portland that Jere Patzer, the president of the North Pacific Union Conference, was diagnosed today with liver cancer. My dad said the doctors told Jere he has 3-4 months to live. I grew up with Jere and Sue as my friends and as a babysitter for their two boys.

Though I have never spoken with the Patzers regarding my spiritual journey, I know by the editorials Jere writes for the Gleaner, we are miles apart. I will still grieve and pray for him and his family as they begin to live with this news.

I am praying Psalm 34 for Jere and Sue..."but they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing...seek peace and pursue it....none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned..."

Please pray Psalm 34:18 with me for Jere and Sue Patzer and their family. "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

To Him ONLY who gives peace that passes understanding,

Denise

Denise, I will pray for the Patzer's. This really is shocking news. God is soveriegn; He is in the business of calling people to Himself, and our bodies failing, in an eternal perspective, is not the worst thing.

Thanks for telling us.

Whom did Jere marry, Denise? I went to college with him.
Very sad.

I will pray too, Dd. Jere Patzer was a youth pastor (I think interning actually) at my hometown church in Reading, PA when I was baptized at age 12. He didn't baptize me, but his wife helped us girls in and out of the baptismal tank, and we all adored them.

This announcement comes on a day when we celebrate life; not only Christ's life-victory over the power of death, but the eternal life we now can claim as our own, here and now, in Christ.

News of this nature always brings sadness and I go immediately into prayer for Jere; however, as Colleen pointed out, our natural focus always rushes to the physical. This is not bad or wrong, but simply in the spiritual realm, a mis-placed focus and emphasis; for we are not physical beings, we are spirit(ual) beings housed in a physical package or "robe" as Native Americans refer to it. His Majesty, King Jesus is a sympathetic Savior and Lord. But He looks at the over all purpose and will of the FATHER, and the heart of Christ knows that for His elect, all things work together for the good of those called according to (this) His purpose.

May His grace appear in healing power, if it is His will for Jere, or in manifesting assurance of peace and inner calm and solid trust in Him with Whom we have our all. ...... Jess

Have a blessed worship in spirit and truth day on this blessed, unspeakably life-freeing celebration day. Our God is ALIVE!
