In the movie I watched with my Adventist a Guadian Angel was very prominent. I'm wondering what your experiences is with this SDA phenomenon.

I was taught as an Adventist that everyone has a guardian angel. Further, I was taught that my angel would not accompany me if I went somewhere God didn't want me to go, such as into a movie theater, a bar, etc. The fear, of course, was that if a fire should break out, we would be stranded in there without our angels, and that also meant we were stepping outside being right with God and thus, if we burned to death, we would be lostóall because we had ventured where we knew we should not go.

Wow. There really was a lot of anxiety!

I was taught the angels wouldn't even go into a bowling alley. My eight year old granddaughter attends a SDA school and the school sponsers a dads and daughters bowling day each year. Go figure!

My freshman year at Southern Missionary College, I snuck into a movie theater (risking suspension) on a first date. The Holy Spirit convicted me strongly DURING the movie, ---not about my angel being absent--:-), but that my life would be empty without God. I "rededicated" my life to God at that point, and experienced a strong revival of spirituality for several years, including being a literature evangelist and student missionary. Seems like my angel as well as the Holy Spirit was present....but I had also been warned of the danger all my life.

This was late 70-s early 80's. Its interesting that so many of us that were part of the revival on campus during that time are now being called out of the adventist church, not due to bitterness, but out of a deep desire to know GOD more. Its like the 2nd revival for those of us who were so sincere in our faith at that time. Most of us experienced some sort of burnout with religion for at least a period of time, of course we were also spending large amounts of time in EGW reading, and the endless self-sanctification cycle. Its great to reunite with those friends, and join together in an even deeper connection which includes freedom in the finished work of Jesus Christ, and the constant indwelling Holy Spirit.

Where does the teaching of guardian angels come from? Is there any sound biblical base for this?

There are 199 references to "angel" (singular),
more on "angels" and more on "angels'"
Many refer to God sending His angel to minister, protect, carry out God's purpose.
Ps. 34:7 is a popular text. Isa 63:9; Dan 3:28 where Daniel says God sent His angel to shut the lions' mouths.

The word "guardian" is not found in the KJV, but the principle of angels as our guardians is clearly indicated. Perhaps Heb. 1:14 being one of the most prominent.

This may not mean much to you, but I have had encounters with angels who said they never leave our side. They will remind us of their presence if we are attentive enough.

Jess, I agree that the principle of guardian angels is certainly supported Biblically. What do you mean by "if we are attentive enough"? Wouldn't it be up to God to decide if and when a human sees and/or interacts with an angel?

Raven,
I can only speak from my own experience and what was revealed to me. This means my testimony is strictly personal, not Biblically based or tied to any theological principles.

My human tendency is to get involved consciously in my daily activities, work, problems, etc. and after the focused worship time each morning, to slip back into a physical-material focus and sometimes realize at the close of the day that I cannot recall having conscious thoughts of God, or seeking His will in prayer-communion, etc. throughout that day.

That always hits me powerfully hard. So to be "attentive" - for me - means to have more of a Christ consciousness; yes, even an angel presence consciousness. I can see certain things and really focus on that, like light on a leaf, a flower, a feather, and in "that" brief moment, be drawn to recognize the presence of my Guardian or Guardians.

When reminded I speak to my Guardian Angel(s), recognizing their presence with me, thanking them for guiding my hands and my feet; directing my thoughts to FATHER and Jesus.

As for what I describe as "seeing without seeing", I cannot answer who decides to thin the veil between the/my material physical realm
and the spiritual Reality. I tend to feel in my experience that FATHER or Jesus decides when such blessed moments are to occur and why. Heaven alone will reveal the answer to that. I only know what experiences I have had and they have impacted my life like nothing else, save the powerful impact of the Holy Spirit as He ministers to my consciousness when meditating and reading His Word.

I hope that didn't muddy the water more. :c)

Jess,

I ALWAYS appreciate your posts - greatly. Thank you for sharing yourself and your valuable insight. Thank you for reminding me to be on the look out for the presence of God. I know I miss out on so much of what He reveals to me. He uses your "voice" to remind me to soak Him up.

Denise

FYI - June 16 is our move in date. Will you still be visiting family?

Rafael_r,

I understand the curiosity and interest. However my experience has revealed that it is always easy for some to cast doubts, voice skepticism, even cynicism and cast off as a highly excited imagination and I must acknowledge the normal doubts that rise whenever the subject of the supernatural is brought up.

My first experience was when I was 13 years of age. The last period ended around 1992 or 1993.
Since then I have only been reminded occasionally of their presence periodically, but without any conversation.

I will agree to share some with you in a personal e-mail if you desire.

As I understand the above verses and the bible in general is, that if a beliver is in trouble, God might send one of his angels to sort the matter. Also that God in general uses Angels as messengers.

And as I understand the teaching of SDA is that the guardian angel is always by the side of the one guarded. And I have a hard time seeing this concept in the bible. But keep in mind that I'm not very savy in the word of God :-(

May the Lord keep you secured for eternity.

Here are a couple verses that give the impression for personal angels:

Spoken by Jesus:
"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." Matthew 18:10

Said by the Christians when Rhoda told them Peter was standing outside instead of in jail:
"You're out of your mind, they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, It must be his angel." Acts 12:15

While I believe God allows humans at times to have an angel experience, I don't see any Biblical evidence that is the norm for each and every Christian.

Notice, however, that both of those verses would be referring to the person's angel being away from the person, not by the person's side.

I know I have an angel guarding me. I will tell you why. I was pregnant with my son. About 2 weeks before he was supposed to be born, I drove to prayer meeting at the local SDA church. I was going from one freeway to another. As I was on the exit ramp I noticed a huge truck coming up fast on my left in the right lane. I looked to my right and saw a pickup truck coming up fast. I remember thinking, I am going to be squashed between them because there was nowhere for me to go. Before I thought anything else, my little car was on the right side of the on ramp and the huge truck and pickup were on the highway ahead of me. I can only say, my angel picked up my car and moved me so I and my baby would not get killed.
That is one I will never forget. My son was born a week later.
God is truly awesome in all He does and I thank Him for the angels.

Diana, we had a related experience when Roy, our elder son, was learning to drive. He was entering the freeway on a short entrance ramp. A van in front of us slowed suddenly as a huge semi drove up beside us in the lane we needed to enter. The ramp was running out, and we had nowhere to go. To our left was the semi; on the right was a steep bank; in front of us was a nearly-stopped van. We had simply no possible way of stopping in time to avoid a horrendous crash.

I braced myselfóand our vehicle slowed smoothly right up behind that van. There was no burning rubber, skidding, screeching brakesóand no crash. It was absolutely impossible. We knew that angels had taken control and had done something simply not physically possible.

I love Hebrews 1:14: "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?"
