with an elderly always-has-been SDA. SDA: "I noticed ----- has another tattoo." Me: 'yeah, I saw that he does." SDA: "That's sure too bad. Tattoos are a sin, you know?" Me, "They may be ugly sometimes but I don't think they are a sin." SDA,"Yes, it says in the Bible it is a sin to get a tattoo." Me, "I recently read that verse. In fact I read the chaper before that verse, the chapter that verse is in and the chapter following the chapter that verse is in and as Christians we are not bound by the verse that a tattoo is wrong." SDA,"Yes we are. It says tattoos are wrong. It's that easy." Me, "There are hundreds of laws given in those chapters. Those are the laws the Israelites were bound by while they were waundering around in Egypt for 400 years. They are not for Christians." SDA, "The Bible says the whole Bible is given for instruction and guidence. That we are not supposed to pick out what we want to follow and follow that and that and we can disregard what we don't like." Me, "I said I read the chapter that verse was in, the chapter before it and the chapter after it. It also says not to wear clothing of different kinds of cloth and that a lady is unclean for seven days after her menstruation and can't be touched and some other rules on different things. Do you watch real carefully so that when you get dressed you don't have different kinds of cloth on?" SDA, "Those laws we are not under. The health laws we are still bound by and tattoos are a health issue. There is NOTHING more important to God than our health. We are created in His image. It says the body is the temple of the Lord and the Lord is not going to dwell in a garbage can." Me," So what about all the Christians whose bodies are full of deadly desease, cancer, toxic stuff like liver damage, Christians who have AIDS and those sorts od things? The Holy Spirit up and splits when a Christian gets a disese?" SDA, "You're trying to twist what I've been saying. Of course the Holy Spirit doesn't up and leave when a Christian gets sick. Those sorts of things are unavoidable. Tattoos, smoking and liver disease from alchoal is from a persons own poor choices. Some deseases we have no control over. God knows if we could have avoided the illness." Me, "O.k., I think I get it". And I went home. Aaaaaaugh!

At what point is the body a garbage can? Can you be classified as a garbage can by eating too many vegeburgers and gaining too much weight or does it have to come from eating too many hamburgers? And since when is menstration not a health issue? I think most gynecologists would disagree with her when they are billing her HEALTH insurance for her yearly exam.
Do ya feel like banging your head against the wall?

Violet, Yes, I often get very frustrated with the SDA loved ones I deal constantly with. Their 'logic' can drive me crazy if I actually try to make sense of it. Speeking of vegeburgers, I read on the news that the sniper Mr. Malvo went to live with the older fellow as a young teenager. The older one would only let the youngster who he trained to be a terrorist sniper who caused great greif and sadness to many people in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland, he would only let the boy eat soy burgers and soup. I am not implying that people who only eat soy burgers and soup become terrorists but rather that folks that get real funky and extreme aboout diet tend to be not too well-rounded in other areas of their lives, too. But, yes, that is how the conversation went. It's very extreme, very unBibical and I would think really depressing for the folks who believe like the person does that I had this conversation with. I say very depressing because I know that no matter how hard a person trys to obey all the rules and regulations it will be impossible and then SDA's, at least the ones I know, feel like they go in and out of salvation like we go round and round through a revolving door. And, too, i think it is sad that this person and there are possibly others who think likewise actually believe the most important thing to God is peoples physical health. I think the most important thing is our salvation through the blood of Jesus.

I can so identify with "Their 'logic' can drive me crazy if I actually try to make sense of it".
