I didn't know there were good Sabbath-rest hymns! All I'd know was things like Fanny Crosby's "Don't forget the Sabbath". But I found this hymn by Charles Wesley which talks about the Sabbath-rest in Jesus, and I thought I'd share it. I found it at the great resource site, http://www.cyberhymnal.org

Wow, Darrell! Thanks! I love that! It reminds me of this other one I stumbled on (again by Wesley)---
My friend also introduced me to this next hymn by Charitie Bancroft, which speaks of the assurance we have in Jesus. The traditional tune to it is the same as "Sweet Hour of Prayer", but we like best the version on the "Hiding Place" CD by the group Selah.

Browsing through a used bookstore today, I came across an old English hymnal and spotted this hymn inside, talking about the rest that comes from knowing the Holy Spirit. Recently it's also occured to me that John 14:27 is not independent of John 14:26.

Since we are talking about worship music here I thought the following might be of interest. I saw it in the last couple of days on a blog I subscribe to. "Worship Matters" Sovereign Grace Songbook Now Available For over 20 years, Sovereign Grace has been seeking to write and publish biblically faithful, Christ-exalting, emotionally moving songs to serve our churches in congregational worship. Songs that help us, as John Piper has said, think truly so that we might feel duly. Songs that enable God's Word and purposes to be planted deeply in our hearts. About 7 years ago, we published our first songbook. Once I was flipping through someone's old songbook of "praise songs" (I like calling newer ones "worship songs" more these days), and I found this little song or chorus: I never got to hear it, but I loved the words because it was at a time when I was learning that Jesus is truly my rest, my Sabbath, and the song said it so plainly, "Rest in Him---your work is through!" I think the song was by David Fisher or David Fry, I can't remember... some name like that. Anyway, if you know it or where I can find the tune, let me know. Thanks. | ||

Richard mentioned the Sovereign Grace songbook above that is associated with www.sovereigngrace.com site above. Here is an inspiring story related to that ministry where a rapper named "Voice" who was heavy into gangs came to Christ, and joined one of the Sovereign Grace churches: I Hear Voice Here's a biographical sketch of a warm, winsome, humble brother who has been saved by grace and is using his skills at rap--formerly used to celebrate sin and now being used to sing of the Savior--in order to edify the body of Christ. "Voice sought refuge in rap music from his fatherless upbringing and the mean streets of Washington, D.C. Voiceís rap sheet started around the same time he began listening to rap and hip-hopówhen he was 7 years old. It was the early 1980ís, and life in the hood was being lyricized by the likes of Run-DMC, KRS One, Doug E. Fresh, Eric B., and Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane. Those were the hip-hop pioneers who shaped Voiceís ear and his outlook. He began break dancing, then rapping. He practiced impromptu and spontaneous freestyle rap, calling himself MC Finnesse. Thanks for the search, Mwh. I just tried a google search but it turned up only two results, both appearing to have been written by the same person who quoted the song and, ironically, missed the point by focusing on a Sabbath day instead of the Sabbath Person, Jesus Christ Himself, our Sabbath Rest. Go figure. Oh well. | ||

You know, looking back at these hymns, especially "Before the Throne of God Above", it seems like they were written for us who were Adventists, you know? LIke God inspired them knowing that someday they would touch a special place in our hearts, in our hearts that were weighed down for years and years not knowing the assurance of Him, His presence, and His finished work! I don't know how the FAF retreat was in February, but the next time you have one, I think it'd be wonderful to sing that song and others that we can all really join in on because we understand them & what it's like to be set free! (I hope I can make it to a retreat someday! That darned Pacific Ocean...!) | ||

I love that song, Ramone. We got it on a CD of hymns that were the "theme songs" of various revivals throughout the last 100+ years. This song was, I think, the song from the Welsh revival in the early part of the 20th C. It's wonderful. Colleen | ||
