So why do SDAs believe that EGW is inspired? Is it the holding up the book thing?

1. Because she does not contradict the bible
2. Because she has predicted things that has since come true.

So they try to prove these two points all the time.

Thanks. I was an SDA so you would think I would know that. What did she predict that has come true? I don't understand the "she does not contradict the Bible" reason. Aren't there alot of contradictions as well as alot of adding to what is in the Bible?

U2,

Yes, she does contradict the Bible, but they think she doesn't.

Basically, they believe she is inspired because she told them she was.

Just like any other false prophet and their followers...

Yes, Jeremy--you've summed it up. She told them she was inspiredóand James promoted the idea from earliest times before the church was formed. Having a prophet to endorse one's ideas was really good for business. James eventually made a lot of money publishing her "views".

So how do SDAs approach potential SDAs with the evidence that she was inspired?

First, they educate a non-adventist in those "wonderful truths" of adventism, isolating them from the rest of Christianity by the Sabbath wall. After person is already convinced of these truths and that the rest of christianity is wrong, he is introduced to the Ellen White. Now he is eager to seek confirmation for these truths, and because Ellen White believed them, he finds a good support for his beliefs.

As he is now trusting his new beliefs he is trusting Ellen White. After all, adventists prove to be right and the whole christian world wrong. The new believer is disappointed with the christian world, but until now he is not dissapointed by adventists. All they presented was biblically proven, or so he thinks, and he has no reason to distrust their claims for Ellen White.

I recall seeing a segment on Unsolved Mysteries about Ellen White many years ago. The one part that stood out in my mind was her holding that Bible for hrs on end. When my wife and I were being indoctrinated via the Amazing Facts Seminars they held off talking about EGW for a few weeks until they were sure they got the hook gooooooooooooooooood and set in us.
But the evangelist, Steve Delong, keep hammering into our heads, "If's it in the Bible we believe it, if it's not we don't". Then towards the end they bring out EGW and how she was inspired, etc. Something about that didn't set right with me, too sneaky for my liking. But, I ended up getting baptized.
Long and short of it is I never bought into the EGW schtick, unlike allot of folks at the church I attended. The "Sister White Says" club.

The advantage that Mormons have is that they always have a LIVING prophet in their midst (plus several in the "celestial kingdom"). This seems to appeal to alot of people. On the other hand, Seventh-day Adventists only have a DEAD prophetess--a nonexistent one at that. Ellen White was not only highly controversial in real life, but even her 33-day, delayed burial continues to puzzle her devotees. Some have speculated that they were afraid that Dr. John Kellogg would exhume her body and perform an autopsy on her brain.

On March 22, 1999, William Fagal of the Ellen G. White Estate Branch Office at Andrews University, emailed to me the following reply to my inquiry about Ellen White's funeral and interment:

"Thank you for contacting the Ellen G. White Estate. Her funeral took place on Sabbath, July 24, 1915. She was not actually interred, however, until Thursday, August 26. (How's that for funeral trivia?) Yes, I know what you are wondering, but I don't know why the interment was delayed so long." (This information is footnoted by Dirk Anderson at www.ellenwhite.org/obelisk.htm)

Jackob is right. First they take EGW's doctrines and, using EGW's (mis)interpretations, they show these doctrines "from the Bible alone" to the potential converts. All of this is done without mentioning EGW of course, to make it look like they get their doctrines from the Bible, even though they actually get them from EGW. Then, once the converts accept these doctrines, they introduce them to EGW and show them how, amazingly, EGW "just happens" to teach these "Bible truths" and is therefore a true prophet.

I can't think of anything more deceitful--it is totally evil!

Deceitful and evil is how I think of Adventism and why I think it is very dangerous for anyone getting involved in it.

Wow, it sounds like quite a calculated process. I grew up SDA so I didn't have that experience where I was convinced that she was inspired. It seems like a HUGE leap to believe that someone is a good teacher who we agree with and someone who is inspired.

Dennis, I love your point about the Mormon advantage! It is calculated, U2. As both Jeremy and Diana have said, it is deceitful and evil.

Dennis, I found it interesting that her funeral was on a Sabbath. I grew up being taught that funerals and weddings aren't approiate to preform on Dabbath. This was because of the work involved in those activities. Very interesting that once again EGW did opposite to what the rank and file SDA's are told to do.
