I'm glad someone brought this up here because I need clarification. My sda son told me even Jesus rested on the sabbath after His death. I had been taught that after Jesus' death He went to Hades and preached and took the keys from Satan. Of course, at the time I could not find any bible verses to support this and felt foolish. He told me another Christian friend of his said the same thing as I did but also could not find bible proof. I now have 1Peter 3:19 and 4:6 but does anyone else have thoughts on this?

I don't know all the meaning of "what Christ did" while He was dead, but the significance of "resting on the Sabbath" was that by dying before sundown, He showed that the work of atonement & redemption was finished. :-) Since that day, as Hebrews 4:7 says, we enter His rest "Today", because "Today is the day of salvation" (2 Cor. 6:2, I think). Adventism misses this point in the wake of focusing on the Sabbath day instead of the Man who rose from it and brought us into peace and completeness in Himself. In Him Eden is restored!

Christ Himself said that He would give only one sign...the sign of Jonah, which ties into being in the belly of the Earth...Hades. The bible clearly says He wasn't asleep!

Yes, here's the passage where Jesus prophesied that:

quote:

"But He answered and said to them, 'An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;
40for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:39-40 NASB.)

The heart, or center, of the earth has to refer to Hades, not the tomb. Jesus' body was not in the heart of the earth.

Here are some more passages which talk about where Jesus went when He died:

quote:

"But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, 'WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?' (that is, to bring Christ down),
7or 'WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." (Romans 10:6-7 NASB.)

That word "abyss" is the same word that is used in Luke 8:31 and throughout the book of Revelation. It refers to Hades, or a section of Hades.

quote:

"Therefore it says,
'WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,
HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES,
AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.'
9(Now this expression, 'He ascended,' what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)" (Ephesisans 4:8-10 NASB.)

Again, "the lower parts of the earth" is a reference to Hades.

quote:

"27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

[...]

"he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption." (Acts 2:27, 31 NKJV.)

"7When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, 'Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,
18and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades." (Revelation 1:17-18 NASB.)

(For Jesus Christ's own explanation of what Hades is, see Luke 16:19-31.)

I hope these passages are helpful.

Judging from the passages that Jeremy listed above, Jesus wasn't resting at all. He was not only conscious, he was busy doing his job...

I do remember that one of the hymns sung in the Orthodox church during the Pascha (Easter) services mentioned that Jesus rested on that Sabbath. These hymns are very old, some as much as perhaps 1800 years old... Like for instance the hymn "Phos Hilaron"... but if you take the Orthodox teaching as a whole, it lines up exactly with the texts Jeremy has posted.

The point of all this is that there can be some truth to Jesus having rested on that final Sabbath day, and yet, this does nothing towards saying we should still refrain from work on Sabbath.
