Come meet Jesus is a book with activites for childern after VBS to continue to encourage childern I assume to meet with Jesus. My friend who is SDA wanted to purchase this book, and approached the board about it and the Pastor's response has floored me:
He said that these programs are too entertaining, you might as well take the childern to a bar or a theaater. and that the childern should just read the bible.WHAT the....???????
She couldnt believe it..
Once again Im so thankful and blessed to be unchained.Dawn

My last experience of VBS at a SDA church...I was asked to do all the music for the program. It sounded like an great opportunity to get all ages of kids involved. I had plans to rent a drum set and get the older/youth group (which included several non-SDA youth) involved by putting together a "band" and some very upbeat/fun music. The older kids were excited and we had started practice when word got out...I was informed that under no circumstances could I use drums in the sanctuary. If I wanted to use drums it needed to be down in the youth room - which, of course, was too small for VBS...!

I am so happy to be worshipping at a place where the focus is on Jesus and not the avenue taken to find Him...It's all about Him!

Lol! This reminds me of a time the southern Gospel singing group 'Uncle Alphus and the LeFevres' came to sing in Manchester Kentucky. They'd sung at several different local churches, and I'd gotten to attend one of their concerts, so I was really excited as a young child of somewhere around 8 years old to see that they were coming to 'my' church - the local SDA one.

Right away I noticed the drums were missing. IIRC, the fiddles were too. It was still a good concert, but so different than the one I'd heard before! I remember feeling awkward, almost embarrassed, for them when they did the altar call at the end of the service. It had felt normal and appropriate at the other concert.

What a difference freedom in Christ makes!!

Blessings,

Mary
