you know when I was a SDA I thought I knew it all that Daniel and Revelation made sense.
And my daughter asked me last night mom what do you think of the history and how Daniel plays out in it and does it matter? I told her that for right now I was just trying to clear the cob-webs of EGW. and that yes I should and want to study prophecy, but I dont know what reading material to trust. Anybody been there done that? Dawn

Dawn,
The SDAs on CARM seem to think they have to have all the answers to everything. When an SDA has asked me I tell them that one of the things I gave up when I decided not to rejoin the SDA church was the having to have all the answers. I am not ashamed to say "I do not know". If and when God decides to reveal to me all the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation I would be happy. But until He does, I will leave that to Him.
I have been asked who I think the Beast is and about the number 666 and the above answer is what I gave them.
So, pray about it and do not be afraid to tell you daughter you do not know at this time. Maybe the two of you can read Daniel and Revelation together.
Just my thoughts.

Hi Dawn and Diana!

I just got a couple of great booklets from ariel.com about the prophesies of Daniel. I say ask the Jews. Most those prophesies have already been recorded as fulfilled and as far as I know, you can't fulfill a prophesy more than one time.

And Jesus himself gave us the answers when he said,

36"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a] but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." Matthew 24:36 (Mark and Luke recorded it as well)

Diana, you saying you don't know is exactly right. I truly believe that's enough of an answer!

My opinion, of course...

Dawn,

I understand how you feel. It is strange to leave a denomination that 'knows it all'. In some ways, I feel totally adrift in the sea of 'I don't know'.

At this point, I have decided that there are some things I just cannot begin to study since I have enough on my plate already with giving up Adventism and having to learn things (some for the fist time!).

I read a book by RC Sproul concerning last day events and he makes an interesting case that most all of Daniel and Revelation has already been fulfilled in the fall of Jerusalem in 70AD. I read his book with some interest, but I have a hard time accepting anything as 'the last word' when it comes to prophecy.

Dawn,

After my wife and I moved from the SDA to a non-denominational church, my wife wrote the new church pastor a letter asking him a bunch of theological questions. His response was second to none. He said, "Instead of worrying about getting all the right answers, try to enjoy the journey that God is leading you on." He went on to say that the answers would come in Gods time.

I think of that often when I think I need the "right" answers. I know it is easier to say than do... I feel your pain.

Tim,
That pastor of yours sounds like a good man. For me, that thought was given to me by the Holy spirit. I had never really thought of it like that until I put it in writing not long ago.

Tim, what an excellent response from your pastor! God is faithfulóHe teaches us what we need to know when it is time. I'm learning that He makes no mistakes, and He has a pattern and reason for the order and the ways in which He leads us to new understandings.

I am convinced that no one has the complete "story" on how prophecy will all be fulfilled. I'm convinced at this point that prophecy is in the Bible so that 1) we have a vague "shape" of what's to come, and 2) we'll realize as it is happening that God is in events. We will understand when we need to know. Meanwhile, certain large, general truths emerge. The central one is exactly what the first words of Revelation say: "the revelation of Jesus Christ".

Insearchof,

I just bought that book at the Ligonier's convention by RC Sproul called "The Last Days According To Jesus"--I just started reading it today--it is excellent.

I like what everyone's said about not needing to know all the answers but rather to focus on God and listen to Him today. I am sure that just as the "first" time Jesus came, there will be many who will not "see" it coming the second time around. Many "knew" the Law---they knew the commands, they know what to "do", but they did not know the Spirit behind those commands, the Spirit behind the Word, and so they did not recognize the Word when He came and their hearts were far from Him.

In the same way today, if we get caught up in knowing words and not the Word Himself, well, you know. There are "Pharisees" today just as there were then, and we can miss the Spirit behind the Scripture when we don't realize what Jesus said, "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life" (Jn.5:39-40). There is nothing that prepares you for "the end" better than knowing Him and walking with Him today, resting in His salvation and in who you are in His sight.

Our pastor said the prophets in the OT didn't always see their predictions come to pass, sometimes they weren't fulfilled until generations later and so the people didn't know all the answers either.

Even Jesus told his disciples that they couldn't contain all that he had in store for them until a later date.

I believe we are in the same situation regarding end times. We can see the signs, but we don't have all the final answers to who or what the beast is and the mark. SDA's will say we are being ignorant about Revelation, but I believe they are the ones who are running in circles and jumping at everything the pope or Vatican does. Hardly what I call living a life for Jesus.
