I'm not sure if this has already been a topic in the past, but I thought it'd be interesting to see what some of the favorite Bible verses out there might be. I have several, but one that makes more "sense" to me since leaving Adventism is Philippians 4:7: "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." I like the way my study notes describe this "peace of God": "Not merely a psychological state of mind, but an inner tranquility based on peace with God--the peaceful state of those whose sins are forgiven. The opposite of anxiety, it is the tranquility that comes when the believer commits all his cares to God in prayer and worries about them no more." Other great verses? | ||

I love Ephesians 3:20. I especially like the wording of the Message paraphrase "God can do anything, you knowófar more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us." | ||

Grace, What an excellent idea for a thread topic. I have so many, but the most clear statement of assurance of salvation are the very words of our Lord Jesus Christ in John 6:35-44: 35 "Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." 41"So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42They said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? I love John 3:17 "For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved". It is just an expansion of John 3:16 which is heard so many times that sometimes I think we get deaf to the beauty of it. So I like this one to hear it in another way. | ||

As one who spends each day on the "sidelines" of life, watching others live, and at the same time watching your body fall apart, and your life slip (sometimes painfully) away, I have to say my favorite text is 2 Cor. 4: 16-18 "Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." N.A.S.B. 1995 Update, There are so many wonderful texts which speak of Jesus, the cross, grace, God's soverignty, and the assurance of salvation on Jesus. Picking a "favorite" is like choosing your favorite child! When I get home, I will have such a wonderful time with Jesus. 1 Corinthians 15;57...i memorized it as a young girl: But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I wasn't sure what that verse would mean, but i even made a robe and embroidered it on the back of the robe in 2" letters. Through all the loses of the past 18 months, it is my only hope that there is ultimately victory somewhere down the line. I also memorized Hebrews 8:11 (I think that's the ref) that says (rough paraphrase) Abraham, when he was called, went out when he did not know where he was going. So much in life these days is changing for me, that I'm reminded that others have also followed God down blind paths and found great blessing. Looking forward is hard sometimes these days, but those are two of the verses that I committed to memory 20 or more years ago that still come to mind as promises for me to hold onto. | ||

So hard to pick just one. Eph 2:8-10 was already mentioned. Romans 5:8 (really 1-10) deserves a top spot. But perhaps at the top of my list-- John 6:68 Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. Peter's words here strike a chord deep inside me. | ||

Ric_b, as a "good Lutheran", I would have to follow that verse up with a loud "Allelujah, Allelujah!!" I love that verse. My favorites - Eph 4:6-7 (new living translation) 6Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. Two of my favorites are John 3:16 and Matt 28:20. I was originally going to say everything between Gen 1 and the end of Revelation. John 3:16 because it tells us how much God loves us and Matt 28:20 that God is with us until the end of the age. Diana |
