It is just sickening how EGW constantly exalted Satan in her writings. Especially reading the context of the quote Jackob posted--yuck! Yes, Timmy, praise Jesus that He has set us free from that false prophetess and that He has rendered powerless him who had the power of death (Hebrews 2:14)! Lisa, we heard that at my in-laws' church. That, as well as there being a very suspicious picture on the inside of the Carpenter's album jacket. The Carpenters!?! Jeremy, you made such an important point. "EGW constantly exalted Satan in her writings." The whole Bible doesn't pay him as much lipservice. I find that was part of EGW's MO to keep people scared enough to stay in the church? Fear tactics. Randy, The Carpenters were not "safe" at my house! The first album I ever bought was John Denver. I remember overhearing my mom's tearful conversation with her best friend regarding her fears of how I would turn out! Denise and Randy, Did you know that there is a definite SDA connection with the Carpenters? I grew up in our Tulare, Calif, SDA church where a pastor Woodhams had a son named Danny Woodhams who became the bass player for the Carpenters. There was a lot of controversy at Pacific Union College whether they were going to allow the Carpenters to come to PUC for a concert, as Danny (a PUC alumnus) had offered the Carpenters as a concert for a very reduced rate. The college finally decided that they could not afford the controversy if they allowed it. Marti and I had the privilege of seeing the Carpenters in Las Vegas once, and I waved to Danny, but I am not sure he recognized me. He used to lead the song services in our church, and, yes, he was likened to almost the devil himself, when he decided to go out into the worldly entertainment industry (well almost the devil (smiley). I recently watched a PBS program on John Denver, and I still tear up when I hear "Sunshine on my Shoulder". (I know watching PBS dates me) It brings back memories of a simpler time. Sure I was dealing with the typical teenage angst, but I wasn't asking the big important questions as I do now, and somehow I didn't have the responsibilities I now carry. I suspect my home was a little more liberal than some as I recall when Phil Driscoll's 2nd album "Blowin a New Mind" came out(it was pretty wild back then) I would turn up the old Philco-Ford stereo as loud as it would go and play along with him as best as I could.(You trumpet players will know what I mean.) My parents never complained. When I drove away to WWC, I was the first to leave home. My parents, brother and sister sat in the living room crying as they listened to David Gate's Suite:Cloud Rain. What a powerful piece of music. It became a tradition to play it whenever anybody left home, and it still makes us all cry when we happen to hear it. Like all of you I prefer my new found freedom in Christ to my past spiritual understanding, although growing up in my home I have no regrets. ME ME ME!!! (Randy, we also loved John Denver and had ALL his records) My first concert, the Osmond Brothers with Donny and Marie at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1977(?). My Mom, my 21 yr old sister, me (10) and my younger sister. They played "Crazy Horses" all wearing white, fog machine, and Jimmy joined in! It was a dream come true, haha!! As soon as the concert was over, we followed the bus to the local hotel where they stayed. We got to see every sibling walk across the balcony to their rooms. My little sister yelled out "We love you Marie!" and she hollared back "I love you too!" They would call that stalking now... After the Osmonds, I moved on to the Bee Gees. I am one FUN girl! Leigh Anne Donny has had two really great albums come out in the last few years, mostly re-dos of top 10 hits. I highly recommend! | ||

Leigh Anne...but did you have the life size poster of Donny up in your bedroom???? Now that was living. They were my first concert too in Washington DC when we went there on vacation when I was in 4th grade. Crazy Horses was the song they lead out with. I also loved the partridge family. How they glamorized living on a bus! We are all dating ourselves :-) .... | ||

Does anyone remember Evie? I am not sure of the spelling...she sang Christian music...probably one of the first Christian "rock" singers in the mid 70s. She use to come to Portland for a concert once a year at the Opera House downtown. I remember one year her concert was on a Friday night. I went with a group of my girlfriends. We all promised our parents we wouldn't clap since it was during the Sabbath hours! True to our word, we were probably the only people not to clap the entire concert. How funny...a row of prime and proper SDA girls sitting with their arms crossed while the house showed their appreciation and their love for God! I took my 13 year old daughter and some of her friends to The Revolve Tour (Women of Faith for teen girls) and told them they would have to walk back to the hotel if they didn't dance!
