I was talking with my mother tonight and she mentioned that communion is tomorrow in her church. She said that communion is a renewal of your "baptismal vows". I was like...What??? Does anybody remember that being taught when they were Adventist?

I'm sorry; I just posted the above question in someone's thread and I don't know how to move it out. I'm sorry. Colleen, could you move it to the right place (if you see this)? Thanks so much!

I remember it being equated with a 'mini baptism' where, in essence, because just your feet were dirty and needed to be washed, communion would make you right again, but you weren't as stained as when you were first baptized for the remission of your sins.

I believe this is tied up to the erroneous teaching that baptism and salvation is only for your sins of the past. After that, it's up to you (and the Holy Spirit helping, of course) to walk in sanctification.

Praise Jesus that he died for my sins past, present, and future!

Yes. I was taught that footwashing was a sort of 'mini-baptism' that symbolically took care of the confessed sins committed since the last footwashing service (but woe upon you if you participated with unconfessed sins on your conscience!).

It's taken from Jesus' words to Peter, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean." John 13:10. In this understanding 'Bath' is said to refer to Baptism, and the footwashing service is understood to restore the person to 'cleanness'.

Thanks, Susan for your explanation. So, someone else was taught this, also. It just seems that SDA's have Jesus in the background, and their denomination itself as the most important tenant in their beliefs. My goodness, this even comes in to play when receiving communion.

Susan, I see what you are saying and that is probably exactly what my mother meant. Your answer was very informative. Thanks again!

Mary, thanks for your reply, also. Yes, that must have been what she meant (my mother). It seems like in SO many of their beliefs, there is a different twist they have or add.

I'am going to look that text up tonight--John 13:10 and read about it. Thanks alot, Mary!

Mary,

Thanks for your much more succint response. That is exactly the reasoning, and I remember worrying had I confessed everything since the last communion. How different it is now!
