I have seen an increase in the amount of Adventist Publications I get in the mail this year. Lately I seem to get at least 2 or 3 publications a week. The funny thing is, I haven't attended an Adventist church in over 12 years. I used to get maybe 1 or 2 things a year in the mail and you had to scrutinize them to figure out they are from the SDA church. Lately it's very "in your face". Today's mail was "Adventist World". A publication I've never received before. Sometimes the publications are from the General conference, but many times they are from the Arizona conference (where my name still remains on their books). Does anyone know why the sudden increase in mailings? Has anyone else noticed this? I think it's going to push me to finally get my names officially removed from their books. My name is still on the books of the Tucson Desert Valley SDA church but I haven't attended that church in 24 years. I don't know how they have kept up with my moves over the last 24 years - from AZ to NJ to PA. My Mom must have something to do with it. I've been a Lutheran for 10 years. I don't read these publications at all. One day I glanced at one of them and felt the old guilt start in and the thought of "what if they are right about everything". I quickly threw the magazine in the trash. Now when the mail comes I throw it out right away. If I ask them to remove my name from the membership lists will the mail cease or will it take years? Just curious. I'm really getting annoyed with it.

Most of the time the only publications we get are the two my mom has paid for subscriptions, and they go straight to the trash. There were two others we used to get for free because of donations we had done some time ago - when I asked them to remove us from their mailing list they did so immediately. Our names are removed from the SDA church and they've been leaving us alone, so maybe that's the first thing you should do to cut down on publications received. We are still on the ABC e-mail list - maybe I should ask for that to be removed too.

The Pacific Press last week sent me the brand new edition of "The Desire of Ages" (billed as: The Devotional Classic on the Life of Christ updated with New King James Version). Was this just a special mailing or are they just sending out to every SDA?

Oh...BIG NEWS...On Friday I received word that I AM NO LONGER SDA!!!!!!

Living in the complete freedom of Jesus!

Dd,
CONGRATULATIONS AND PRAISE GOD!!!
You probably received the book because your name was not taken off when they decided to send out the book. You can write across the front, REFUSED, RETURN TO SENDER. That way it will go back to Pacific Press and hopefully they will get the picture that you do not want their mailings.

Denise, congratulations!

I think the NPUC sent the book to all its members. My mom received one at her address in Loma Lindaóshe said the time has come for her to officially ask for her name to be removed. (She and my dad never transferred their membership from Oregon to California when they moved in 1998óthey just stopped attending the SDA church and joined Trinity Church.)

Congratulations, Denise! I know you feel a tremendous relief to no longer reside on those books! Colleen, same for your mom. Has your father made the move officially?

I believe one of my New Year's resolutions is to officially ask for my name to be removed. I have started thinking about my letter to the board.

My dad died in 2001. Neither of my parents had their names removed, but my dad started the reading that finally led the two of them out of the church.

I have noticed that in our area SDA churches advertise constantly for evangelistic meetings via mail and don't add that they are SDA... who can miss the signature beasts?!

Dd,

We received one of the Pacific Press "gift". We were at a dilema as to whether to open it so that we could see what the differences were or send it back to the press so that they would have to pay the return postage. Alas, we opened it. My understanding is that this was the idea of Union president Jerry Patzer.

Colleen,
I did not know that your Mother left adventism also. I am so glad for her and you.
God is truly awesome in how He moves in every one of us.

Kathy, It seems to me that over here on FAF we sure are getting a lot of Lutherans! I think that's great. Go to www.oldlutheran.com. It's a rgreat website, especially tjhe Ole and Lena jokes.

You know you are a former Adventist when.

You yell like a kicked dog when someone mentions Sabbath.
You shout hallelujah loud enough to wake the dead when they bring out prime rib.
Your favorite hymn is ìHe set me freeî.
You are startled by the word investigation.
Most of your relatives think you are heathen.
You think most of your relatives are heathen.
You hold a garbage can in one hand while retrieving your mail.
You send in your letter of resignation to the church without a stamp hoping they will pay the postage.
Most of your new friends are Lutheran.
Most of your old friends donít come around any more.
Your idea of a party is a feast at kernel sanders.
You use chicken nuggets for chips playing rook.
You are most happy at the mall on Saturday just like the regular folk.

O.K. O.K. I know when Iím not appreciated!!

LOL, River! And you are definitely appreciated! For me, I would have added "or tithe" to your first one.

ROFL River,
Like Raven, I would have made this the first one: You want to walk out of church when tithe is mentioned. (Then you remember that God loves a cheerful giver.)
I have said before I really appreciate your sense of humor.

O.K here ya are Diana and Raven.

You wear a hidden money belt to church.
when the sermon is on tithing you get an extra 30 minutes sleep.
You fill out the tithing envelope with big letters with the word "OFFERING!!!" written in red indelible ink.

Just for my friends.

Yes, it does seem that you find the occasional former who has become Lutheran. Personally I think non-Denominational is the most appealing to anyone leaving. A natural reaction to an abusive denomination is to avoid the trapping of denominationalism altogether. We started our search at non-denoms (not to be confused with non-demons, which is even more important!) for just that reason. And if we had found one in our area that didn't mix our works with God's grace, we probably would have never tried any organized denomination. The advantage, and dis-advantage, of any denomination is that teachings are more clearly outlined. Those walls provide a degree of stability and protection from creeping heresies. At the same time, those walls can hinder good progress as well. The core doctrinal understandings that are important to me are found clearly and abundantly within Lutheran doctrine. But that doesn't mean that I agree with 100% of Lutheran doctrine or understanding on subjects.

But even as one who has chosen a denominational church, I think we make too much of church labels, including the non-denom label.

Aloha guys,

I get the mail before my parents so I sort through all the Adventist propaganda. The publications are crazy! In connection to your guys litte list of "You know you're and ex-adventist" list. I have this one for the ones who are still Adventist. "You know you're an Adventist when you see the Miller beer commercial and they say "It's Miller Time," and all you can think about is William Miller." Just thought I would throw that out there...
