...Your friends laugh and tell you eating meatless meatballs is like eating appleless apple pie...

...Someone is visibly uncomfortable to see you at Walmart on a Saturday afternoon...

I forgot one! :-)

...You tell your friends you have never played Pinocle before and then beat them quite badly because it is just like Rook...

These things have really happened to us!

What a burden we had in Adventism...what freedom we have in Christ!

these are not my own, but ones I remember:

Your bedtime stories were about real people instead of fairy tales

You wondered if the earth would last long enough to have a girlfriend/boyfriend

You have looked for angels outside of a movie theater

On Saturdays you catch yourself telling your children, "You can wade, but don't swim."

We went can gathering instead of Trick or Treating in pathfinder uniform!

You mother ever borrowed comic books from the neighbor kids to illistrate "bad" things in teaching her Sabbath School.

You used the Pike Pass on the turnpike on Sabbath from someone elses car so you wouldn't have to drop in the coins at the toll booth. That way you were only breaking man's rules and not God's rules.

You could only go to the zoo or state park on Sabbath if you had a season pass, because you couldn't hand the attendant money upon entering the park. OR....you went over to the park or zoo on Friday before Sundown to pay for tomorrow's excursion!!!!!!!!! If you handed the attendant money on Sabbath you were actually causing that person to perform job duties therefore causing him to break the Sabbath!

A man in Sabbath school actually told me that! I said that I didn't understand how the women could chop up things and make salads and do all sorts of kitchen things if was a cold item, but the word "bake" meant work. You actually could not turn on the oven to 350, pop in 2 potatoes and push "bake" but you could chop up vegetables! I always thought that was SO ridiculous, but I think EGW used the word bake, so there you have it.
(When I questioned him, he just sputtered about how it is the girls who always "go bad" and how his sister turned from the truth. I thought that was funny!)

Yes, Bb--the kitchen thing is such a double standard! You might also be Adventist if:

Öyou ever half-baked your entree on Friday, refrigerated it overnight, then put it in the oven with the timed-bake on so it would finish "warming" and be ready to eat when you got home from church!

Öor if you ever whispered to a friend about a third party who (gasp!) made blueberry muffins on Sabbath morning.

brewers yeast or nutritional yeast is a staple in a SDA kitchen, uses unclude a topping on popcorn,it really is good! but it also masks the taste of tofu when dipped in Braggs then the yeast.

Tender Bits were some funky Loma Linda glutton type product that you had to flavour with something. We used Brewer's yeast as it helped provide a flavour. Otherwise it would have been like eating rubber. The fact that we fried them in ample oil probably helped as well. I recall enjoying those tasty morsels.

Bb, sounds like the "saints" I dealt with at the GC when I worked Security there. It was okay for us Adventists to work on Sabbath, because "" wink, wink, nod, nod, "We knew the truth"".

I had to work a Women's Ministeries Retreat at the GC on Sabbath several years ago. My job was to patrol the parking lots in the security van and I got a call on the radio around 10 AM to come to the front desk. Seems the lady who was organizing the event had an upset stomach, and needed soy milk!!
I drove to several different food marts at gas stations with no luck, so I had to go to the Superfresh near the ABC. Now I was a Special Police Officer with the State of MD, so I am in my SPO uniform and had to walk all around the store to locate the soy milk, all the time wondering if I would run into one of the "saints" there.
Needless to say I had to break the Sabbath to get this lady her soy milk, and she didn't even thank me!!!

I have one word.

<< Nuteena >>

YUCK.

When I met my husband everyone in the house kept talking about how wonderful Nuteena was. I honestly thought they were talking about cat food!

91 I can just imagine you in uniform wandering the store :-)
my husband has always said SDA are the rudest people.

I went to the pathfinder camporee a few yrs back and I thouhgt this is going to be like heaven on earth all these saints gathered together in osh-kosh,boy what a rude awakening, waiting for a bus once and having folks storm the lines and push and shove,i couldnt believe it!! signs had to be put up in the shower rooms not to go to the bathroom in the shower stalls,I had my spot in the air field to listen to a sermon and no lawn chairs this group came in and put their chairs right in front of me not in back where they could see over me,finally some man told them how rude they were,I walked by some tent where some kid was really getting it from thier father he was swearing and I thought boy this kid is going to get hit or maybe already has this guy was out of control,so I stopped right outside the tent and said what ever is going on in there better stop right now, then I patroled the tent. Looking back I can see where it was there I began my first doubts of SDAisim.Dawn

I just have to add this story--after going to a cooking class at campmeeting where we learned how
wonderful brewer's yeast was (ever wonder where it got it's name?)Whenever I used it at home my husband would ask me how long this item had been
in the refrigerater--I only used it a few times and gave up!Peggy

We has brewer's yeast growing up on popcorn as well as used other ways in cooking. I never cared for it and have never bought it myself.

Anyone ever have homemade pimento "cheese" spread, or cashew "cheese" spread is another one? Being in a vegan family, that's another strange food item we had growing up. I thought that was nasty also. My poor husband has been exposed to so many bizarre things in the name of healthy food! What's wrong with just eating normal food that doesn't take hours to prepare?

I was so happy to learn that the kingdom of heaven is not about eating and drinking -- in the SDA culture you'd think it was about almost nothing else.

Raven, nice to hear from you again.

Even though I have not changed my eating habits, I too am glad that the kingdom of heaven is not about eating and drinking.

If and when I will ever be so inclined, I am looking forward with a clear conscience to trying some new things.

What I can't understand is how they can possibly think that their "man-made" processed/manufactured products are healthier than the foods that God created for us to eat--such as all-natural animals! :-)

Even if they are right about what is healthier and what is not... it is wrong to put a salvational lable on the process.

About a year before I seriously started to question SDA beliefs, I asked my wife this... "We have fake eggs, fake cheese, fake milk, fake ham, fake hotdogs, fake sausage, fake tea and fake coffee, but we are the only ones with the REAL religion??? Hmmmmmm"

Tim, I always thought that same thing every time I'd spend a Sabbath with the family. I really hated some of the fake stuff, so much that on the way over I would stop by Carls Jr sometimes just so I could get the taste of a real burger!

I like to tell my fil that the cows and chickens I eat are all vegetarians. (Most of the family does eat meat, but he's one of the last "True" SDA vegetarians)
