Every so often, on Sunday mornings, I will watch "Amazing Facts". I do this to remind myself of what I left and am so thankful God pulled me out ever so gently.
I cannot keep up with DB as he quotes scripture.
When his book came out, my mother bought one for each of her chilren. When I decided not to rejoin the SDA church, I cleaned out my book case. I threw out all my books by EGW and all related books, DB's included.
Thank you God for pulling me out so very gently.

Well, that's the thing and danger about proof texting, especially in the DB fashion. If you take snippets here and there out of context and do it quickly enough, then your listeners are more likely to believe your fabrication than if you slowed down and gave them a chance to either write down the texts to look them up later, or turn to them in the bible to find the context.

Wasn't it Baily Gillespie (my former prof at La Sierra} who did research awhile back that reported that 80% of Adventists admit to not studying their Bibles and praying on a daily basis? Many of the people I've known that love Bachelor depend primarily on ABN and the Sabbath School lessons for their understanding. Why am I tempted to paraphrase Proverbs 3:5: "lean not on your own understanding (or anyone else's either)" parenthesis mine. Jesus had tons of good stuff to say in the four gospels. Studying these is what got me to asking questions about Adventism anyway. It was certainly not my professors at La Sierra or University of Kansas, that's for sure.

Hi Steve,
I went to Lynwood Academy with a Bailey Gillespie. I wonder if it the same one as your professor.
I have heard his name before, I think when in VA the pastor at the church there knew him.

The Adventist church is so dry that even the flys refuse to come in the window.

I just overheard two buzzards arguing over who would have to over fly over the building.

They are so dry people are afraid too use them for kindling.

They have too park a fire truck outside the building to guard against spontaneous combustion.

The Saudis refused them entry into the country on grounds they didnít need more desert.

Nobody has ever said to them ìKeep your powder dryî.

The local congregation has been accused six times of arson.

Their bones were prized back in 1844 for flint rock, one old codger swore if he run out of Adventist he wouldnít be able to shoot squirrels.

A load of them got into the car and all four tires melted.

They arenít allowed within ten feet of the gas pumps.

If anybody ask who said all this tellíum it was Steve.

U2, back to your original question asking if we were told we would be lost if we left the church, even the denomination President, Jan Paulson, said if he was to leave the church he would lose his salvation.

A quote from Paulson in May 2002 to church leaders from the exadventist web site:

In May 2002 SDA General Conference President Jan Paulsen delivered a speech to gathered SDA Church leaders in which he made the following remarks:

ìÖwe believe that being Seventh-day Adventists has direct bearing on our salvation; ÖI would risk my whole spiritual life and salvation were I to leave what I am now and join any other community.î

ìA further word needs to be said about our being ëloyal to our heritage and to our identity.í Some would have us believe that there have been significant shifts in recent times in regard to doctrines that historically have been at the heart of Seventh-day Adventism. Take specifically our understanding of judgment and Christís ministry in the heavenly sanctuary (Investigative Judgment) and the prophetic messages in which these teachings are contained. Some are suggesting that since the 1980 (Glacier View) meetings, the very teachings that the church affirmed that year at those meetings have been abandoned, and that the church has essentially moved to accept the very positions it rejected then. Such a claim is a distortion of reality, and nothing could be further from the truth.î

ìThe historic sanctuary message, based on Scripture and supported by the writings of Ellen White, continues to be held to unequivocally. And the inspired authorities on which these and other doctrines are based, namely the Bible supported by the writings of Ellen White, continue to be the hermeneutical foundation on which we as a church place all matters of faith and conduct. Let no one think that there has been a change of position in regard to this.î

There you go again, River. Now I suppose I'll have to do your repentin' for you. Forget it, it's a full-time job just getting my own slate cleaned. Praise the Lord!

I wish you had'nt mentioned those buzzards. I almost had the image of you with head in the sand and new trunk lines erased from my mind. I hope we can meet up someday (pretrib)- I think it would do us both some good to pray together!

Susan, that makes my stomach churn. Jan Paulson's identity is Adventism, not Christianity. Ellen White is mentioned more than Jesus, who is not referred to directly but only his ministry.

I can't tell you how many SDA sermons I've heard where Jesus is rarely (if ever) mentioned, but Sister White comes up over and over and over. One Pastor (his name was Wolter) in particular was guilty of this. I used to think "Why don't you just drop Christ altogether, get him out of the way, and call your self a Whitian?"

Also, Mormons will say the same thing about leaving their church, that they'd rather die than leave the Mormon organization.

The way to Salvation through Jesus Christ is so simple, and yet so many people want to make it so complicated!

On a side note, in my academy Bible class we learned how to give Adventist Bible studies. We would write a subject on the outer flap of the Bible with the first text. Then at that text we would write a few notes and write down the next text - proof-texting our way through the Bible and often ignoring the whole context of the chapter. This isn't unique to my academy class because I saw an Adventist pastor do the same thing with his Bible. Is this something unique to Adventism? Since leaving Adventism I haven't seen anyone else do that and I've been around many non-SDA ministers.

U2bsda,
I learned that technique also in academy and I am sure I am older than you.
Thank God we are no longer in that situation. God has taken us out and we are free in Jesus.

Hmm...U2bsda, I never thought about that either! Now that you mention it, the only notes in the margins I've seen in non-Adventist people's Bibles are notes about the context of the text or a reference to another text. They aren't pre-planned Bible study paths.

My Academy Bible is full of those Bible trails. I have one on the state of the dead, the Sabbath (of course), Spirit of Prophecy, and second coming. Each "trail" is a different color ink. It came in handy so I wouldn't get lost in trying to teach someone. Afterall, you know how confusing it would be (and dangerous) if you were one proof-text off!

Diana,
About 3 years ago, I taught a course called "Share Jesus Without Fear" to a Sabbath School class. It was created by Baptists William Fay and Ralph Hodge. It did use proof-text format for leading someone step by step toward the Sinner's Prayer. One thing you can say about those Baptists - they sure know how to get someone saved - and fast too! They don't muck things up with a lot of nonessential doctrine either. God bless em!

Disclaimer: I do belong to a nondenominational church that does have distant ties to the GC of Baptists.

Also Diana, yes, the Bailey Gillespie you know is the same one I do.

Steve, you said that it was reported that 80% of SDA's do not study their Bibles. I would suspect that number is higher than that. Why do I say that? SDA's simply do not know how to study their Bibles. Others in this section of FAF stated Adventists have "proof texts" listed in their Bibles. That's all they know, if they really even know that! They cannot read and study the Bible without running into something that their religion does not teach; then they don't know what to do with it. I remember getting a new Bible as a child after Baptism. Baptism was a ceremony I did not understand at the time, but it seemed like the thing to do at the time. Besides, the pastor needed another number by his name! This Bible was a great gift that I carried back and forth to Church fairly faithfully and opened once in a while when the pastor did read a verse from it. My grandson just got a new Bible at his Baptism and there it sits in the box. All new and shiny. My heart cries for this child.

SDA's cannot read Paul's writings with any understanding at all. Reading Paul's writings has been and of course, continues to be a joy and tremendous revelation of God's Truth. Praise God for sending the Holy Spirit to lift the veil from my eyes! There is sooooooooooo much to learn, but again, Praise God for His Mercy and Grace; I have Salvation through Jesus Christ My Lord.

Steve,
I belong to a non denominational church also. I also have a Bible study with the Baptists every Sunday because my church did not have any Bible study groups that read directly from the Bible. My church has one Bible study now with a man that is studying the parables of Jesus. I will start attending that one.
I thought the B. Gillespie is the same one I knew. I looked up his photo in my academy year book and found his picture on the internet at La Sierra.
Isn't our God wonderful and so awesome in leading us out.

Whoa, hold on there Ardyj! First, you are preaching to da' choir on this one. You cannot lump all SDA's into one big ignorant clump of Clampett's. After all, lotz of em leave because of their Bible study. I praise God for His mercy and grace along side you, but that requires that we understand that the same mercy and grace is extended to everyone else as far as we know.

Actually, after re-reading your post, I'm gettin a little excited about the good chances of pullin soma dem ignorant sinners outa Bachelor's cave. "cover me fellas, I'm goin in"!

In my Starting Point class at my church we learned we do not travel this journey alone. We have Jesus and each other. So, on saying that, "Go gett 'um, I will cover your backside and pray for you."

Big apology Steve! Of course, that's why SDA's do leave; because they read their Bibles. Guess I was speaking from previous experience of my own, and what I observe in the lives of too many of the SDA's I know, some of my family included; I'm very sorry to say. I was led to leave that church when my questioning led to study Scripture alone upon the leading of the Holy Spirit. I pray for the Holy Spirit to put some discontent or curiosity or something in their thinking that would send them to the Bible alone for their answers. This is definitely something we all want to share with whomever will come to Christ!

Watch out going into that cave!! I think DB is still in the darkness somewhere!

The only "proof texting" or memorized Scripture I've seen outside of the Adventist penchant for those multi-colored bible studies (it took me months to do Gertrude Battle's studies in my bible) is for the plan of salvation. In my experience, most other denominations read the bible, not just pull out certain verses (except for those individuals who sometimes close their eyes and put their finger on the "guiding" text for the day :-O )

Only in your dreams Stevy, only in your Dreams.
I sometimes translate mine over into Hill Billy though. And when I translate it over into my own Hill Billy way of thinking, what I see is that the Word of God stands Straight and true and no amount of proof texting, IJ, EGW,can cause it to fail or pass into oblivion,or mean what it does not say.
I am just simple in my thinking, I know that. I don't have a great amount of education but the Holy Spirit has got plenty and he passes this old country boy a nugget or two every once in a while.
Hang with that sure Word, that clear path, the sure Word of promise, the Lord Jesus.
Now I will get off my stump.

Glory be, so the Holy Spirit does speak hillbilly! That's greatly gratifyin to know, for in case you ain't caught on yet, I'm no hillbilly a-tall. No siree, I'm jist a hayseed from Kansas (originally anyway), where people mostly just work hard and thank the Good Lord fer another day.

I think I'm beginning to suffer from all the *#?@#* snow we've been uh, 'blessed' with lately in Denver.
