I made a post a few weeks back on a young SDA couple that are unwed and pregnant. Well I just found out that the Pastor is requiring them to drop thier membership and after they are married to be rebaptized.
I dont even know what to say .........

Heavy sigh. I agree with Dianaóperhaps this will helps them to see the problems with Adventism and look toward Jesus instead.

With prayers for them,

Dawn,

What an assinine situation. As if these kids don't have enough on there plates already.

I have to ask myself.....What would Jesus do?

Somehow I don't think this would be the way he would do things.

Somehow I see Jesus drawing pictures in the sand, with the morality police slowly dispersing after looking over his shoulder.

Just my opinion,

Randy

In one similar situation I knew about, the couple also got rebaptized as a solution. I don't know if they were told to or if it was voluntary.

In the SDARM, where divorce is not allowed, divorced people who were 'coming to the church' but planning to get remarried would be encouraged to get remarried right away (by someone who was not from the SDARM) and THEN get baptized . . . because sins after baptism are considered 'different' than sins before baptism. (If you remarry after baptism, as a member of the church, you are automatically disfellowshipped and are from then on to find whatever salvation you can 'outside the church.'The only way return to church membership in that case would be to divorce the second spouse.)

I know the SDA church is not this extreme, but I wonder if something of the same dynamic is going on: certain sins 'require' rebaptism to wash away while footwashing (which I was taught as a young SDA is a mini-baptism) is sufficient for lesser offenses.

The SDA church may not be OFFICIALLY this extreme (I haven't looked at their church manual in years) but in practice, it depends on the pastor and the congregation. This is likely a more conservative church, and it doesn't surprise me.

It's more of the insidious works-based theology. That's how I understood it, Mary. Your sins after baptism are different because Jesus only died to forgive you of your "past" transgressions", but from then on out, it was up to you and the Holy Spirit to perfect that character! Jesus couldn't come again if you didn't and were alive. It would, in essence, be your fault.

It also ties in with the investigative judgement where Jesus looks at our lives and sees if we have confessed every sin and are 'safe to save'.

Just the morning at church, Pastor Tim gave a wonderful sermon on "How Would Jesus Handle Modern Day Sin".

He used the story of the woman caught in adultery found in John 8. He noted that "Jesus always put people above policy", and always forgave the sinner and sought to uplift them from there sin.

We as Christians are to support and nurture those that have fallen, or have made poor choices. This was the the focus of Jesus's ministry on Earth, to show us a better way.

In this situation that Dawn mentioned in the first post, how is this action in anyway going to show the forgiveness that we as Christians are to exhibit if we are to follow the example of Jesus. It just blows me away.

exactly Randy, that was my first reaction is that these "kids" to to feel everyone's support. And who is the church to measure one's sins to require them to do this? I would suggest that everyone in the church do the same thing. I have a feeling that they are going to drop and then re-join is to appease thier dissapointed parents. However I pray that like Diane mentioned that through this they will see the errors in Adventisim.

It's almost as if the church is asking that people be "perfect" or "just right" before they're allowed to worship. That's backward! You can come here, but let's make sure that we approve of you before anything else happens.

What was that about a foot washing being a mini-Baptism? Could someone explain that?
That almost got past me. I thought I was aware of just about everything an Adventist could fowl up.

It was explained to me as a child that the foot-washing service which preceded communion in the Adventist church was akin to a "mini-baptism", or a symbolic washing away of our sins before taking communion. The rationale was that when Peter protested Jesus' washing his feet, and Jesus said that if Peter didn't allow Him to wash his feet, he had no part in Him, that "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean," (John 13:10), that Jesus was instructing his followers from then on to wash each other's feet before communion. They had already been baptized (the aforementioned bath) and only need symbollically to wash their feet to sybolize allowing Jesus to wash away all their sins since the last time in order to have their hearts right for communion.

Communion just wasn't done without the foot-washing; people who presumed to eat the "emblems" without the foot washing were arrogantly refusing to humble themselves in repentance, allowing Jesus to cleanse them from their recent sins.

Ellen wrote strongly that footwashing should not be done between males and females, even spouses, because of the fear of raising the animal passions in the males. During the past three decades, however, Adventistsóat least in N Americaóhave provided special rooms for family footwashing, where spouses/parents/children can wash each others' feet. But the ritual must be done before partaking of the elements.

There was always a feeling that non-SDAs were heretical in their communion practices because they didn't practice preparatory footwashing/cleansing In fact, it was taught that taking communion in another church would be wrong. I think the overt teaching about non-SDA communion has relaxed, and in some "progressive" congregations, foot-washing is nowóat least sometimesóseparated from communion. I know Loma Linda Univ. Church had a communion not long ago where they had a foot washing service on Friday night for those who wished to come, and the regular communion service was held on Sabbath.

Oh yes, River, foot-washing is a huge feature of Adventismóand it really reflects the denomination's teaching that atonement was not once-for-all: it was good for past sins, but future sins still need atonement. The blood of Jesus is not all that's necessary for cleansing.

Sigh....................................
Jesus was demonstrating how we are to serve one another in humble service just as he did.
the incident with Peter, Jesus was telling him that if he refused to humble himself he could not be a part of him.
The humble part of foot washing is not in washing another's feet it is having another stoop to wash your feet, that was Peters problem until he finally caught on.
Jeminy crikets how could they be stupid enough to fowl that up too?
Now I know I just might goes off into the woods and run around naked eatin bugs and Bear meat, wheres that cave of Doug B's, I might just need to get in it and smoke some wacky bacy to get my head straightened out.
River looney tunes

By the way, River, they call their footwashing service "the ordinance of humility." Just thought I'd let you know that, in case you hear that phrase somewhere...

I know it's hard, but try to hold onto those cornflakes!
