This morning I was listening to the radio and a song came on by Kelly Clarkson called Breakaway. As I was listening I couldn't help but draw parallels from the lyrics to the leaving of adventism. Have a read and see what you think.
---------------------------------------

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I'd pray
I could break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky.
Make a wish, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget all the ones that I love.
I'll take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jetplane
Far away
And break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky.
Make a wish, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget all the ones that I love.
I'll take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging with revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me
Gotta keep movin on movin on
Fly away
Break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
Take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away
Breakaway

Yes, I see the parallel for sure! Thanks for sharing these lyrics. How have you and your family been? We haven't heard from you in a while!

By the way, there is a problem with the posting log and the "last day" button not working. Richard is working on the problem with tech support for the software company. Hopefully this problem will be fixed before too long...

Things are well. Although as I expected the adventists around me find it hard to differentiate between the leaving of adventism and the leaving of jesus - to them it is one and the same.

There seems to be many built in safeguards in adventism that make it difficult to leave, such as the us and the world mentality and eg whites comments that many lamps will go out etc.

Certainly though this year has been a much better year for our family than last. Distancing myself from adventism has been one of the best things I have ever done.

As I read your post above, I started thinking about my leaving adventism. I never lived around SDAs. My sisters and brothers drifted away from it, my mom quit going to church and my Dad went whenever he had a chance. They were not good practioners of adventism. I drifted away after my divorce. I went to church occasionally. So even though I went to SDA schools, I did not know anyone that was strong in practicing adventism. That made it easier for me to leave. I have had no criticism from the few SDA friends I have and I have not had any from my family. I am very thankful for that. God pulled me gently out over a period of years. Thank You, You are awesome God.

Mike, I'm so glad to hear that moving away from Adventism has made things so much better for your family. When people move away from SDAism toward Jesus (as opposed to just going into the world), the result is inevitably surprising and fulfilling because one is moving toward Truth. When people are living in deception or fantasy or cognitive dissonance, NOTHING really makes sense or "works".

One of my ongoing prayers is that God will plant me in truth and keep me rooted in reality. I love how the Holy Spirit somehow teaches us truth as we meditate actively on His word.
