The pastor had both the SS lesson and the sermon today. Here are some of the highlights from the lesson:

Those who do not adhere to the ‘health message’ will not be able to discern deception

Ditto will not be translated

Ditto damages spiritual well being

A proper/improper diet will have a profound impact on salvation

An improper diet inhibits the ability to come to Jesus

God can bless you only if you adhere to the dietary laws

1 Jn 3:3 implies self purification

Coffee contains poisons

Much discussion about the horror of pork chops & mad cow disease

It takes a divinely inspired person to point the way (science is only now catching up to EGW)

We need to publicly confess our dietary sins ( the pastor then humiliated himself by confessing that he liked Twinkies- I’m not sure but I think the congregation gasped)

Jesus example was to heal physically (no mention that the primary healing was spiritual – the forgiveness of sins)

Witness with health reform as an entering wedge. He admitted that you’ll probably not get very far by starting with ‘THE SABBATH TRUTH” or “THE SECOND COMING”. It’s strange, but he never mentioned THE GOSPEL !

(I just know its got to be there somewhere) Hey you bible students out there – would you find the scripture where thousands were converted upon hearing about…diet reform.

Wow! I feel better now

That's not a worship service. That's instructions on how to be a better SDA!

I wonder if that's why the Mormon's gave up on the words "church" and "worship"... why bother when it's an indoctrination course?

Yuck! Is your head spinning, John?

A good church always preaches the gospel and points to Christ. A good church should never point to itself...

Wow, John--I totally concur with Leigh Anne--although just a few years ago I wouldn't have known she was right!

So Richard's on the floor working on his computer, and I was reading this thread to him. I got to this point, John—"We need to publicly confess our dietary sins ( the pastor then humiliated himself by confessing that he liked Twinkies- I’m not sure but I think the congregation gasped) ", and we both lost it. That's just so funny--partly because it rings so many bells from the past.

I remember hearing all that about the health message being necessary for hearing the Holy Spirit, for honoring the Holy Spirit because we're the temple, for having a clear head so we could preceive the truths we needed to know, etc.

You know, I don't think the concern actually IS converting people. It's more about finding the few, the dedicated, the faithful who will embrace this whole SYSTEM and thus vindicate the church.

I think Leigh Anne makes a really good point about the Mormons--why bother calling something "church" or "worship" when it's an indoctrination course...or a sort of affirming group meeting that reinforces each other's Sabbath connection?

It was such a surprise (it's almost safe to say "shock") when we began attending Trinity and actually heard passages of Scripture taught each week with a clear call to know and honor Jesus. Amazing.

I am 100% convinced the SDA church is a cult!

No Gospel there. The SDAs are trying to get into the banquet with their own clothes rather than the ones God provided. They think their works will get them in.

Fortunatlely I didn't have to go to SDA church this morning I was able to go to the SDB church.

I did, however, stop by the SDA church this afternoon just to see some freinds and I found out the sermon there today was on EGW(glad I missed it). Some of us were sitting at a table and talking and the one guy was saying how EVERYTHING EGW predicted has come to pass, and everone else but me was agreeing. And I mentioned oh, yeah what about EGWs prediction that Old Jerusalem would never be rebuilt. He then told me to SHOW it to him other people have said the same thing but they've never been able to show it from one of EGWs books.(Isn't it one of the early statemnts she made that were later suppressed because it was so embarrasing? If not what book can I find that failed prediciton in?)

Anyway there was more talk by these SDAs about the end of the world coming soon, the Iraq war will usher it in because EGW said sin began in the Garden of Eden and will end where the Garden of Eden was. Another person chimed in that people don't want to hear what the SDAs have to say because they're scared.

I finally just got up and left. I was very glad I didn't attend the sermon there this morning but went to the SDB church and actually heard the Gospel!

Reb, the quote is still published in Early Writings, page 75, paragraph 2.

quote:

Then I was pointed to some who are in the great error of believing that it is their duty to go to Old Jerusalem,[* SEE APPENDIX.] and think they have a work to do there before the Lord comes. Such a view is calculated to take the mind and interest from the present work of the Lord, under the message of the third angel; for those who think that they are yet to go to Jerusalem will have their minds there, and their means will be withheld from the cause of present truth to get themselves and others there. I saw that such a mission would accomplish no real good, that it would take a long while to make a very few of the Jews believe even in the first advent of Christ, much more to believe in His second advent. I saw that Satan had greatly deceived some in this thing and that souls all around them in this land could be helped by them and led to keep the commandments of God, but they were leaving them to perish. I also saw that Old Jerusalem never would be built up; and that Satan was doing his utmost to lead the minds of the children of the Lord into these things now, in the gathering time, to keep them from throwing their whole interest into the present work of the Lord, and to cause them to neglect the necessary preparation for the day of the Lord.

Notice also the bigotry towards the Jews. Also, she is tellingt them that they are not allowed to follow Paul's example, and the Biblical concept, of going to the Jews first.

Twinkies do NOT support Adventist education! "Sweet cakes" can only be from the McKee Baking Company where the more you eat, the more you evangelize. Ellen White never foreknew that "sweet cakes" would help finish the "work." There is a strong, overpowering odor of "sweet cakes," that Ellen White sternly condemned, on the entire campus of Southern Adventist University (smile). Wow, you should see the huge rail tankers full of corn syrup! Ellen must be rolling in her grave.

I confess...

I'm addicted to 'Little Debbie' products.

Especially, with coffee.

Also, another reason Twinkies are "sinful" according to SDAs is because the ingredients includes the possibility of lard and/or beef fat!

quote:

Vegetable and/or animal shortening containing one or more of

Partially hydrogenated soybean

cottonseed or Canola oil

lard and

beef fat

Since this thread is about venting, even SAU students VENT frequently when their roommate returns from a shift at the McKee Baking Company. The penetrating, sweet odor of your roommate's working clothes permeates the entire room--even in the dirty laundry basket. Life in a SAU dorm is not always pleasant--especially when inhaling. Precious memories?

OH yea, i'd forgotten that one. Twinkies are EFIL but Little Debbie cakes are fine. An elderly lady at my mother's SDA church attended Academy with THE 'little debbie' who's portrait is on the box. Which I found interesting, one of those random 'degrees of seperation' kind of contacts. She was the founders granddaughter, I think. Interestingly, that family is VERY observant of SDA dietary practices, but, of course, always had a pantry full of little debbie. I guess it makes the oatmeal patties and homemade gluten go down better.

Just P----D!! I'm going to get even - I teach next Sabbath - the lesson: 'The Bible and Happiness' I'm planning on making it totally Christ centered with possibly a few rocks thrown at favorite Adventist works - it should prove interesting.

It really was a 'group think' rally.

I stated that the subject was so subjective as to create more problems than it would solve - like discussing music (an other one of the pastors rants) I further stated that God wasn't DEMANDING that we be healthy but that He DESIRED we be in good health which I believe to be a significant difference - utterly ignored. This experience took me back 35 years ago to the little legalistic church where I was baptized - I recognized the black cloud hovering over the congregation.

I saw on TV how they make Twinkies - if I remember correctly the are completely artificial - all chemicals manipulated to look and taste like cake and cream filling - it gives them a forever shelf life

Hey now Dennis, I paid most of my way through SMC, or I guess it was Southern College when I graduated, working at Little Debbie, making Nutty Bars! Oh the memories...My roomate worked the 10:30p to 2:30 am shift, and would come into the room, collapse on the Bedspread, with swiss roll dough all over her, and stink up that room. I would wake up to that smell!

Yes, its the same sweets that were served at my sons SDA grade school for "hot lunch". Stale, Little Debbie's from the Little Debbie thrift store, and Pizza loaded with cheese that Ellen forbid. They serve them after Bible class, where they teach the health message of Ellen White, someone they claim is a PROPHET FROM GOD, and then they IGNORE HER.

How can you claim to be God's remnant chrurch, have "the truth" given by the ONLY TRUE PROPHET since Bible times, and then IGNORE the teaching of the prophet in your own conference supported schools or churches!

In Bible times, to ignore a prophet of God was big trouble. If one is a true prophet of God, YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL OF THEIR TEACHINGS, or RISK THE WRATH OF GOD.

...Jeremiah 29:17+

17 yes, this is what the LORD Almighty says: "I will send the sword, famine and plague against them and I will make them like poor figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth and an object of cursing and horror, of scorn and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words," declares the LORD, "words that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets}.

---Lord Jesus, set your people free! Open their eyes God, to truth, to You, for You are Truth. And give us the grace to forgive, ourselves, and others.

(I didnt even see that vent coming)

"Food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do." (1 Corinthians 8:8)

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating or drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17)

(P.S. If anyone tells you that the "vegetables" being eaten in Romans 14 are because the meat was offered to idols, ask them if they have actually ever seen idolatry in practice -- because vegetables are offered to idols just as much and even MORE than meat is!)

"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink... such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." (Colossians 2:16-23)

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons... they forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer." (1 Timothy 4:1-5)

"...Jesus declared all foods clean." (Mark 7:19)

Hallelu Yah!!!!
