I recently bought Ben Hur at the dollar store, really enjoyed it. I also love the early christian movies on TBN. There was one with Richard Harris as John on Patmos (can't remember the title. So come on critics, name you fave christian movie. | ||

I like the TBS movies that came out a few years ago. The first one was "Joseph" with Paul Mercurio and then "David" and "Soloman" were also very good. Another is not considered a Christian movie, but is about a famous Christian called "Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins about C.S. Lewis. I love that movie! My favorite oldies but goodies are "Friendly Persuasion" with Gary Cooper and "The Angel and the Badman" with John Wayne and Gail Russell. Would you believe I still haven't seen "The Passion"? Phil and Jeremy, my husband and I both loved "Facing the Giants", too! For an independent film, it was amazing. They had a very limited budget and most of the crew, actors, etc. were church volunteers. But you would never be able to tell. it was very good quality, and a great story line. Two thumbs up!! Leigh Anne, I really liked the movie "Joseph" that came out in 1995, also. It stars Ben Kingsley, and was excellent. One of my favorites. Grace | ||

We haven't seen Facing the Giants yet, but ISO--I'm with you. I absolutely love Chariots of Fire! (It was the first movie I saw in a theater. I was teaching at Gem State Academy at the time, and a small group of teachers literally drove into Boise 25 miles away disguised with some borrowed wigs from the schools costume collection to see it. One of my favorites is the Ten Commandments with Charleton Heston, also The Passion. The Passion really brought to life what Jesus went through for our sins. I've read it many times in the bible but seeing it in a movie really brought it home to me as I am a visual person. I don't understand why SDA is so against The Passion except that it has some catholic teaching in it which should have nothing to do with it as long as the movie is based on fact. Gail | ||

It has been a long time since I saw Chariots of Fire, but I like that one. I really was touched by The Passion. I made it very personal and kept telling myself, Jesus did this for me. How unworthy I felt and yet so thankful. Diana | ||

Gail, my husband and his brother (who is an SDA pastor and would probably be considered evangelical) had quite a lengthy and passionate discussion with their very strict SDA Dad one night. He was completely against it, especially because Mel Gibson is a Catholic, but also because of the "spirit" behind it which he thought was deceiving. My hubby and his brother kept telling their dad that if it was Biblically accurate then it could be an honor to God. Their Dad just couldn't accept it and "warned" them about it. The funny thing was that their mother walked in and asked what the fuss was. They told her, and she said "Oh yes, I just saw that on video at my sister's house. it was very good!" I'm still surprised that my fil didn't keel over dead from the shock! We have quite a family to say the least... Leigh Anne Colleen, this pastor-bil of mine is one of my favorites. He loves the movies and will go to great lengths to see movies and not get caught! Please pray for him, because I really think he struggles with SDAism and the true gospel. | ||

Colleen, what an incredible, hilarious story! So let me get this straight: you borrowed wigs from the school's drama/"theater" department, in order to go to a theater, since the school/church condemned theater? All the inconsistencies are almost too much to unravel...hehe! Jeremy | ||

Phil, I can't believe I forgot about Luther...I thought that was a wonderful movie. It was strange to hear Luther cursing, but given what we know about the intense struggles he went through, I beleieve the movie likely was accurate (at least as accurate as can be after 500 years!). Colleen...what a hoot! The lengths we went through to keep other SDAs from finding out what we were doing! Laughable now, that's for sure! ISO | ||

Oh, yes--I also really liked "Luther". True story, Jeremy--we borrowed wigs from the drama department so no one would recognize us going to a filmed drama that featured a story of integrity that would prick the conscience of any Adventist... (You might guess from the drama department connection that two of us in the crowd comprised the English faculty!) Leigh Anne, praying for your BIL... I know this movie has a odd sounding name, but I liked "Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." It's kind of an allegory of the Christian life. These kids find their way into the land of Narnia when they are hiding in an old wardrobe. One of the kids betrays the others to the witch of Narnia for sweets (the witch kind of represents the devil). In order to "redeem" him from the witch's rightful claim to kill the traitorous kid, the lion Aslan (who kind of represents Christ) dies in the kid's place, allowing the witch to kill him instead.
