I happened to be reading Matthew 19, and this passage really jumped out at me.

The words that stick out the most to me in that passage are these: "...Then come, follow me." Salvation is found in Christ alone. | ||

That's a good question. The word "testament" means "covenant" and nowhere in the New Testament does it command the Sabbath. In fact, it's called a "shadow" in Colossians 2:14-17; Hebrews 4 says that "TODAY" is our Sabbath rest and Romans 14:5 indicates that it doesn't matter if a person esteems one day above another or not. Exodus 31:13 says it's a "sign" between God and Israel, and Moses is saying to Israel in Deuteronomy 4:13 "So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone." It says in Hebrews 8:10 that in the new covenant God will write His laws on our hearts. If that were the only change however, we'd still be offering animal sacrifices and performing circumcision. Hebrews 7:12 says that there's a "change of the law." Hebrews 7:18 says "there is an annulling of the former commandment" and Hebrews 8:13 says that the old covenant is "obsolete." Notice that it goes into this a lot in this letter of Hebrews. The Hebrews were the Jews who had the law. Notice that the Gentiles didn't have the law,(Romans 2:14), so not so much was written to them about the change of the law in all those letters to the Gentiles; with the exception of Galatians. The Galatians had been listening to false teachers so Paul wrote that letter to them. The old testament often grouped together the "Sabbaths, New Moons and feasts" over and over again in texts such as 1 Chronicles 23:31, 2 Chronicles 31:3 "...the Sabbaths and the New Moons and the set feasts..." and Ezekiel 45:17 "...the feasts, the New Moons, the Sabbaths..." so the apostle Paul was simply following the same pattern when he said in Galatians 4:10,11: "You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain." (Notice Colossians 2:16 where Paul says: "...a festival or a new moon or sabbaths") Anyway I said more about the Sabbath on a previous thread, not too many threads back  Dianne | ||

I think that, either the guy was already a perfect Sabbath-'keeper', but that wasn't enough, and Jesus pointed that out. OR, the Sabbath was standing right in front of him, so whatever he was doing on saturday didn't matter. steve | ||

The way I see it the young man was a Jew of Israel who was required to keep the Ten Commandments, the law for Israel had not yet passed away, howbeit it was on it's death bed so to speak because the lawgiver had come in person. When Jesus ask him to follow, the money got in the way. Many of the Adventist Pastors as Mark pointed out in his audio tape, refuse to follow because of the money and they too turn back sad to the Adventist teaching, I am thankful for people like Mark and many others here that refuse to compromise because of the money or other things.
