Hi! I was hoping someone could help me out with a question I have about childrens bible books. I have a couple of sets given to me from some people from the SDA church I used to attend.
They are 'The Bible Story' Volumes 1-10 by Arthur Maxwell published by The Signs Publishing Company and 'My Bible Friends' Books 1-5 by Etta B Degering published by the Review and Herald Publishing Association. I have also been given 'Uncle Arthurs Bedtime Story Book',
'Your Bible and You' and 'Today, Tomorrow and You', all by Arthur Maxwell.
I was just wondering if these are biblically sound books, or are they injected with SDA (Ellen White) influenced ideas? I have never actually read them but the more I read about the false teachings of the church the more I want anything like that out of my life.
I have already ditched the small collection of Ellen White books I had accumulated in my relatively short time in the church.
Also, what did you do with your unwanted SDA publications? Did you give them away, burn them, throw them in the bin?
Thanks so much, Maree

I got rid of EVERYTHING! And when the SDA magazines come in I take them straight to the garbage can.

Hi Maree

Those books are full of Adventist doctrines which are not Biblically correct. I would get rid of them. Gilbert recently had a post where he exposed some of the incorrect teachings of Ellen versus what the Scriptures say. These books all have Ellen's vcrsion and I personally threw all my books in the garbage.

I pretty much did the same as you have done. That is, I aquired the same set of childrens books when I first turned my life back over to the Lord.

Since I was now in a solid Bible believing church and learning the true message of the gospel, etc., I, little by little, found what was in the childrens books to be fully polluted by the EGW mindset. Finally, I just put them in the trash. After all, why spread false teaching to others.

The post that Gilbert started is Adventist "Weeds" in my Garden. I think it says it all.

I like the story Dennis told about the noise that all the books made as they went into the dumper.

Somewhere back there is his post on that, he and his wife had put all their books in the the garbage and as the dumper came around it made a huge "Chunking sound" as it transferred the books into the dumper.

I think Dennis would tell you that it made a most satisfying sound, eh Dennis?

Yes, Dennis tells a very good story about getting rid of his books!

THROW THEM OUT, better yet, burn them. Whatever it takes to make sure they don't get into the hands of unsuspecting people.

AND keep your eyes peeled at doctor's offices. They often have free books that have been given them to put in their book bins for kids.

Get rid of them so no one else can get their hands on them. In other words burn them or wrap them tightly for the trash so the bag will not come undone. That is what I did with all my SDA books.
Like Patria I look for those cards in doctor's offices and quietly put them in my purse, take them home and shred them.

I found one of the blue "Bible Story" books in my new church's library. I brought it to the pastor and told him it was an Adventist publication. He didn't know very much about Adventism until we joined his church and talked with him about our background. When I showed him the book, he said he would definitely get rid of it!!

I agree! We burned our SDA books--it took us a couple of days because we burned them in the fireplace, and we had to tear them apart so they'd fully burn. Weird feeling, tearing and burnings books...but it surely opened up some great book shelf space--which we've filled with some great stuff!

Those Bible Story books are full of Ellenisms.

That Doug Batchelor video about the end times is basically a rehash of the ending of the Great Controversy. Everyone but the SDAs are destroyed by fire from Heaven, that looks like little flaming meteorites raining down on them.

Oh and it shows the Adventists fleeing during the "Sunday Laws" and their anguish over worry over "forgotten and possbily unrepented sins" as they are without Christ as a mediator at this time.

Truly a horrid piece of rubbish. I did get kind of a laugh about the flaming "mini-meteorites" mainly because it looked so stupid.

And to think there was a time I believed this bollocks!

We have more than a few National Sunday Law books around. I use each book like shop towels and toilet paper. If I have greasy hands, I tear out a page and clean up. Oil leak someplace, tear out a bunch of pages and soak it up! Doggy went potty where he shouldn't have, get a couple pages of National Sunday Law and clean it up. I figure I will give this 'trash' one last workout (its one redeeming feature, we have discovered!) before it heads to the burn barrel. We live in the countryside where we can burn our garbage. The little NSL books have a most peculiar odor to them, when burnt. Reminds me of sulfur or something :-)

It also makes fairly good mulch material to suppress weeds around wine grapes. Just tear off the cover (because you don't want the red ink in the ground) and use the pulpy stuff to cover bare ground. If Jan Marcussen only knew! Maybe he'd like a photo of all the uses hahaha!

Maggiethecat,

'The Bible Story' Volumes 1-10 by Arthur Maxwell published by The Signs Publishing Company and 'My Bible Friends' Books 1-5 by Etta B Degering both are based on Ellen Whites writings and disagree with the Bible. As an example compare the story of the flood and the Tower of Babel. The part about the TofB folks speculating about a futire flood is hogwash from Ellen White. The Bible says no such thing. The Bible says Noah and his family went into the ark the same day it rained. The BS says 7 days before. The BS says Eve wandered from Adam and ate the fruit, and includes a full page drawing! The Bible says Adam was with her. And on, and on. All books published by Adventist sources follow Ellen White and not the Bible. Best thing is to burn them, or throw them in the trash.

Also watch all doctors offices and church libraries and alert them to the heresies in these books.

LOL Larry, wish I had thought of that re the Doggy cleanup.

I burned stuff too. The rest went in a dumpster no one would venture into.

Maree, I read a few Uncle Aurthur stories recently, I was horrified! What a shame based, guilt and fear based, manipulative, bunch of horror! No wonder there is a lot of neurotic behavior in Adventism, maybe even psychosis. I am serious, not just making fun. There are some real double-bind messages in those books--the stuff that is known to foster schizophrenia.

I know a couple of schizophrenics, some paranoid delusional, and depressed (yes even leading to suicide) SDA's. There is no hope in Ellen and the church's message. No Gospel...no Jesus. If these people didn't have these tendencies to begin with they sure aquired them trying to live up to Ellen's standards and always falling short, accompanied by a lifetime of fatalism (preparing to be martyred).

It all leads to mental illness! After all, the mastermind of the church was mentally ill!

The worst part was the preparing to be martyred.
I stopped having hopes and dreams, what for? I'm just going to wind up dead or in prison or in the wilderness when the Sunday Laws come.

Praise God I no longer have to live and think like that!

Thank you all so much for your posts! I'll definitely bin them. Unfortunatly I can't burn them, we don't have a fire and live in town so can't burn them on a bonfire either.
I definitely agree about the mental illness, I was severely depressed, I just couldn't get my head around all the Sunday Law nonsense. I remember a discussion in one Sabbath School lesson about how if we’re not prepared to sacrifice our children for God then we haven’t got enough faith. They said that if someone held a gun to our childs head and demanded that we give in to 'man’s rules' (ie the Sabbath or some such) then we should be strong enough to stand by our beliefs and let our children be killed. I was horrified and it really deeply affected me.
I was advised by another church member, when my child (who has an Autism Spectrum Disorder) was having a tantrum that I needed to rebuke Satan from her immediately.
Thanks again, I'll have a good cleanout today!
Maree
