quote:

It is also against the will of God to pray for the sick if they withhold tithe. We should first find out if the sick one has been withholding tithes or has made trouble in the church. 1021 U. T. (Unpublished Testimonies)

quote:

"I have received letters questioning me in regard to the proper attitude to be taken by a person offering prayer to the Sovereign of the universe. Where have our brethren obtained the idea that they should stand upon their feet when praying to God? One who has been educated for about five years in Battle Creek was asked to lead in prayer before Sister White should speak to the people. But as I beheld him standing upright upon his feet while his lips were about to open in prayer to God, my soul was stirred within me to give him an open rebuke. Calling him by name, I said, 'Get down upon your knees.' This is the proper position always." (Selected Messages, Vol. 2, p. 311)

quote:

"It is not always necessary to bow upon your knees in order to pray. Cultivate the habit of talking with the Saviour when you are alone, when you are walking, and when you are busy with your daily labor. "(The Ministry of Healing, pp. 510, 511)

Larry, that one on tithe is great! Who needs TV?

I imagine that the people of Ellen's time received plenty of entertainment with her writings. She and Joseph Smith would of made a first-rate team! Imagine where the Mormons would be if they had 6-1/2 feet of "counsels" to read.

I'm laughing so hard my chest hurts ...

And Ellen is supposed to be a "continuing, authoritative source of truth" for the Seventh-day adventist denomination? SDA colleges could save a lot of money if they just had school faculty get up with a straight face, and read from these books for Saturday evening school auditorium programs. Imagine taking your date to an evening reading of Ellen White's Counsels on Health?

Imagine visiting a Seventh-day Adventist marriage counselor that uses Testimonies on Sexual Behavior, Adultery and Divorce as their guide.

How anyone can put this stuff in the same league as the Bible is truly beyond me!

In academy I had a Pearl Jam album which was filled with all sorts of wacky "health" advice from the 19th century -- I guess they did it to be ironic or tongue-in-cheek. When I showed it to a friend, he commented, "I feel like I'm reading Ellen White."

egw was rather fanatic at times, depending on which issue was currently on her mind. This next example really illustrates and shows how her own words betray her. egw was addressing herself to tithes and offerings under the heading, "The Only Way to Manifest Gratitude."

quote:

"The Lord does not need our offerings, we cannot enrich Him by Our gifts ... Yet God permits us to show our appreciation ... This is the only way in which it is possible for us to manifest our gratitude and love to God. He has provided no other way." Counsels on Stewardship p. 18 & 19

Many sda's say they "keep Sabbath" because it shows they love God. That concept is at variance with the above statement!
