Somehow this gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. When has the Seventh-day Adventist organization ever been honest with the public? I wonder if the Seventh-day Adventists would be willing to share the following with their PCA counterparts? The June 1976 issue of Ministry Magazine, the official publication for Seventh-day Adventist ministers has a rather enlightening article. The title of the article, beginning on page 7, is “What It Means to Be Part of — The Highest Authority That God Has Upon Earth”. (http://www.adventistarchives.org/docs/MIN/MIN1976-06/index.djvu?djvuopts&page=7) I guess the Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Evangelicals and others are not part of the Body of Christ? And what about the great reformers and preachers of the past that we studied about in our Bible classes? A triumphalistic church and a triumphalistic leadership will not be quick to repent and to openly acknowledge mistakes. Unqualified admission that mistakes have been made are rare in Adventism. A thoughtful observer could not but see that this Rome-like ecclesiology springs from a soteriology of the same character. Well, I would imagine they failed to mention the GC quote Gilbert, and a few other things like investigative judgment, Jesus being an angle, no sex between married couples (animal passions), Gaseous trees, ankles, no Possum and sweat taters, no assurance, no WalMart on Saturdays, no joy no how and thats just the tip of the ice burg. Sigh. Big sigh again. The Presbyterian Church USA is, I believe, fairly liberal. The two churches should actually get along quite well since I don't believe either one believes in Scriptural inerrancy. In the atmosphere of the emergent movement moving through Christianity, the Adventists and the Presbyterians (USA) and other liberal denominations who have abandoned the reliability and absolute authority of Scripture will find it easy to have conversations together. Imagine—comparing their experiences of understanding the Bible with the influence of Ellen and John Calvin! The fact that Adventism grew out of an Arian root while the Presbyterians grew out of the true apostolic root will, at this point, likely seem like a trivial detail. Since the Adventists can morph their stated beliefs to look like anything they want people to think they are, and since the Presbyterians USA have abaonded the literal, historical, grammatical, inerrant reading of Scripture, what is there to alarm them? Yet somehow, if the real truth about Adventism were known, I suspect there are theologians and clergy among the Presbyterian USA church that would be alarmed if they knew the real truth. Colleen | ||
