Leaving the Adventist Ministry - A Study of the Process of Exiting

http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=23317112#

This study of exiting from the Seventh-day Adventist ministry was written in situ,
and would not have been completed without the support of a great number of
people. The insights it contains, the experiences that shaped it, the provision for
everyday practicalities and motivation to endure, testify to the collaboration of
colleagues, friends and family. I am grateful to the forty-three expastors and twelve
wives for their willingness to open heart and soul and to share with a relative
stranger painful memories and intimate details. For the most part they did this not
with a spirit of malice toward the institution but in the hope that their combined
stories might effect both understanding and change.

Reading the available information in between the "subscription applications" indicates a very well researched current topic. Will keep persuing information in Australia. It will be interesting to learn when, as well as the extent, of the "Official Version" if released from that source.

Don't hold your breath.

Thanks Jorgfe for the breaking news tip.

Gilbert, interesting-looking book. I noticed it was published in 1999 and focussed mainly on the exits that occurred during the 80's, post Glacier View, in the South Pacific Division. I would love to read the whole thing--I noticed, in the very brief paragraphs available, that the study really focusses on a sociologic assessment of the exit of Adventist pastors. That in intself would be interesting because it seemed to examine the effects of church leadership, pastor isolation, and even personal profiles of the "leavers" as compared to the "stayers".

I would be interested in seeing how many of those studied left primarily because of pressure from the church--and perhaps it was most of them--in the wake of Glacier View, and how many actually ended up leaving not only the pastorate but also the church. The issue of spiritual conviction did not appear, in the brief visible paragraphs, to be a primary factor. Many pastors left over "theological reasons" during that time, but they still retained some sympahty for Adventism and some sustained a very liberal worldview. In other words, the crises that precipitated the carnage of the 80s did not, in all cases, result in people finding Jesus.

Actually, the reality of the church's deception and dishonesty even with its own teachers and preachers has yielded a huge fallout of people who were deeply wronged, many of whom do not know true freedom in Christ.

I had intended for this book to be a centerpiece of the Literature Review chapter of my Master's Thesis documenting the experience of former Seventh-day Adventists. I am getting concerned because I am unable to find it available from the usual retail outlets.

I am going to use my college's inter-library loan service, but if anyone here finds this book pleasePleasePLEASE email me at satchr8ed64@yahoo.com. Also, if anyone is interested in knowing the details of where I find it if I am able, please feel free to email me and I will be happy to loop you into any source I uncover.

I must find this book!

Colleen,

Thanks for your observations re the year (which has stretched out to the current time 2007+), the theological reasons, as well as the resulting carnage of that time, (which has currently extended to the present time and looks like extending for some time yet). It is amazing the total confusion within the organisation, let alone the doctrinal issues as a result. With all the regrouping and panic reorganising the "true Jesus of scripture" has been further obscured.

This is why the work of this website and associates is so important in placing before interested enquiring people an alternative accurate scriptural comparison.

Well summed up in your last sentence of this post.

Here is to lifting up and sharing the "true freedom in Jesus" with all who need him.

Freeatlast, can you obtain the book online? It was being offered through the website above as the current free online book if one is a member of that site. Or do you need it in hard copy?

I didn't want to sign up for the service just for one book. Besides, I definitely want this one to be a permanent part of my own library so I just bought a hardcopy of the book yesterday thanks to some links Jorgfe and Jeremy sent me (thanks guys!).

Would you like me to post the links to the booksellers here? I'd also be happy to share my copy of the book with others after I complete my research.

Here are the links I sent Freeatlast. He ordered 1 already.

It appears that there are two copies available right now at http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?&isbn=0275962296&nsa=1

http://www.worldretailstore.com/item/BE-0275962296.html claims this book is available now. Not sure how that can be, but I was able to go part way into the order process.

Here is the URL for libraries that have it in stock:
http://www.worldcatlibraries.org/wcpa/top3mset/39391213

Another poster provide the following:
It is also available from the publisher at http://www.bookshop.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/mub/search.cgi?START=0&STEXT=Leaving+the+Adventist+Ministry+&STYPE=TI&submit=Search

Well, my first two links were the same as Gilbert's first two links. :-)

Here are my three other links:

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?isbn=0275962296&st=xl&ac=qr&src=dir

http://www.allbookstores.com/book/compare/9780275962296

http://www.bookfinder4u.com/IsbnSearch.aspx?isbn=0275962296&mode=direct

It seems there are two different editions of the book--one of which is a 256-page Hardcover by Praeger Publishers in 1999. The other is 236 pages by Greenwood Pub Group in 1999.

You are an incredible researcher, Jeremy. I never cease to be amazed at what you come up with. What kind of work do you do?

I would like to give you second choices and tell you what kind of work I do Gilbert, but nobody has figured it out yet. It ain't eggzakly classified, it just has no classification.
Its like groom lake around my place, people gaze through field glasses to see if there is the lightest bit of activity, once somebody thought they saw movement though, but the local paper wouldn't take the report, they thought it wuz a practical joke.

River that is pretty funny!

Ever considered picking up soda cans for cash? Many years ago, as a college student, I picked soda cans out of ditches and garbages and netted $300 in around 2 weeks. I thought that was just spiffy!
