quote:

I Cor. 11:10 KJV
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

This verse is part of a section (verses 2-16) on the subject of "headship" when we are worshiping God.

Can anyone, using scripture, explain why angels are being mentioned in this verse.

Phil, I've got to give you credit for coming up with some real good ones! Were you like that in grade school? <grin>

I don't know where to even start with this one. Do you have any ideas?

(About now I wish some Mormon missionaries would come by so I could see their reaction.)

The explanation I heard while I was studying the Bible with a Charismatic church was that evil angels look for opportunities to oppress women who are not living under the authority of either their own husbands, fathers, and/or the pastors of their churches. If the woman is living a wanton life, in other words, she's fair game for evil angels.

I don't know if that's what Paul had in mind, but it's the only explanation I've ever heard on this verse. I'm interested to read responses from others on this forum.

Gilbert,
I lead an adult Sunday School class where, today, we covered I Cor. 11:2-16. I asked the same question in class I got no takers. So, I took them to I Peter 1:10-12 as a possible explanation and still no opinions expressed. For me, I consider the answer to still be an open issue.

P.S. Mostly, I was in SDA grade school, and I had a tendancy to ask the questions that you weren't expected to ask out loud. In the first grade, I set the trend by fighting all the other boys who were picking on the only black girl in the school. And, when it got to the principal, I demaded to know why if God loves all of us, why didn't we do the same. Pacific Union Conference officals, who didn't dare offend my grandmother, weighed in on my side, so my actions caused a major change of policy in the St Helena SDA School. The girl, Eva was her name, and I became friends all the way to high school graduation.

Hopefully, I am the side of what is uplifting, right, loving and true.

Phil, I'm gonna have to take Gilbert's stance on that one. I haven't the foggiest. But I gotta write that down to ask my Pastor tonight, I'm gonna get a kick out of seeing him scratch his head. Heh, Heh.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

Phil,

Here is a link to an explanation for the phrase
"because of the angels" in 1 Corinthians 11:10:

Thank you Dennis. That link does give what appears to be the best explanation and most likely is the correct one. What also makes me think it is right is that Paul refers to this whole section as "traditions" to be obeyed.

However, since I am looking for scripture, that does not seems to exist on this topic, I think I will file it under the category of "pending further input" questions.

From Tertullian (200 AD) "On Prayer";

quote:

For indeed it is "on account of the angels" that he saith women must be veiled, because on account of "the daughters of men" angels revolted from God.

Interesting. Tertullian isn't known to be orthodox in everything, but this statement of his does seem to reflect common ideas of his time.

LOL, wow, now doesn't that just connect it to that "Job & sons of God" thread!
