I was always taught that he could have. It's only been in the last week or 2 I've even heard anyone suggest He couldn't. I use to always wonder what would have happened to Enoch and Moses if the plan of Salvation had failed. | ||

This last Sunday at Bible Study class we studied about the transfiguration. My personal thought was, "How did Moses and ELijah bypass the Investigative Judgment?" Have their records been reviewed too -- since 1844? And what about those who rose from the grave and went about Jerusalem at the time the veil was rent and the earthquake took place? Gilbert | ||

Funny thing, I was reading the account of Jesus' temptation in Matthew 4 last Sunday. Odd thing is, I read it this time without the SDA blinders, and realized that, really, Jesus wasn't even close to falling for anything. Jesus went into the desert to be tempted, meaning Jesus went looking for a fight. This is not the action of someone who is concerned that He might sin. Then, the Devil doesn't even have the guts to come tempt Jesus until He has been weekend by spending 40 days without nourishment. This is an act of desparation on the part of the Devil. Then, Jesus says in verse 10, "For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" He is not simply saying, "I cannot worship you because it is a violation of the command to worship God." In fact, Jesus is completely turning the tables on Satan, saying, "You should be worshipping me!" Adventists can't see it this way because the Adventist Jesus is a small weakling who is not truly Divine in the way the Father is. | ||

Totally true, Baskillet!! Furthermore, the passage says Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted. This was never about testing Jesus' mettle. From the get-go his wilderness experience was a declaration of who He was and of the nature of Satan's true intentions. Another thing about those 40 days is that Jesus showed He WAS the perfect Israel. For 40 years they had wandered in the same Judean wilderness and had sinned abysmally. Jesus went into that wilderness—perhaps on the other side of the Jordan but the same wilderness nevertheless—and did not sin. In every way Israel failed, Jesus was Israel's substitute: He did not lose sight of Whom to worship; He did not get sidetracked by temptations about food but trusted God. Very true. To understand the Bible I try to notice not only what is in a passage, but also what isn't there. The Devil prefaces each of the first two temptations with "If you are the Son of God..." He doesn't do so with the third. The implication is that, by the third temptation, Jesus has so demonstrated Himself that the Devil concedes the point in that debate. Once Satan conceded who Jesus is, then Jesus replied with the logical conclusion: Satan should worship Him, not the other way around. | ||
