From my SDA relative:

"But there is coming a time of trouble such as never was.... Daniel 12:1. Those who will be saved from this Earth will have to endure that time. From here I will speak from the perspective of a very committed Seventh day Adventist Christian. In Revelation 7:1-4 John depicted a special group of people who are SEALED with the SEAL of God. The Seal of God is His Holy Sabbath. I don't need to go into detail on this. You know what I'm speaking of. God's Last Day People will have His seal (Sabbath) in their foreheads (symbolically) and according to Revelation 14:1 they also have the Father's name in their foreheads. When I look at Mark 14:36 I find Jesus appealing to His Father "Abba" to take away the cup of sorrow from Him. Jesus addressed His Father by a name, which directly translated from Aramaic means Daddy. So, when I put the three scriptures together - Revelation 7:1-4, Revelation 14: 1 and Mark 14:36 I find something rather interesting. The redeemed from the last days will have the seal of God - SABBATH and the Fathers name - ABBA stamped on their brain (symbolically). Now look at this - SABBATH/ sABBAth. Can it be any plainer? My question is this, will I/we be ready to go through this terrible time and have that seal and name, or will I/we fall flat on our faces and loose out on everlasting life cause we were not totally committed to Jesus in our hearts and minds. It's very easy to speak the name of Jesus and confess how much we love Him. But are we totally rooted and grounded in the Faith of Jesus?"

I know, I know...typical SDA stuff we've all heard before. Except for the Sabbath/ABBA connection. I've never heard it before and I think it's pretty ridiculous, especially since we're dealing with two different languages. But I was just wondering if any of you have heard Adventist teach this connection before?

I've heard it before, sort of. Thought it was ridiculous.

Also had an SDA Pastor try to read "Lord of Sabaoth" in James 5:4 as "Lord of the Sabbath." And the sad thing was, he was an SDA seminary doctoral student. You'd think he would have picked up somewhere that Sabaoth does not mean the same as Sabbath. Sabaoth means "hosts" IIRC.

Typical SDA proof-text exegesis. One of my favorite ways to show how stupid it is to tie isolated Scriptures together regardless of context is:

"So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself." -- Matt. 27:5

"Jesus told him, 'Go and do likewise.'" -- Luke 10:37

Sometimes I think nothing could do more to destroy bad theology than to point out the original manuscripts didn't have chapter and verse notations.

Actually, it could be looked at a different way...

The Sabbath was kept before the cross.
Once Jesus fulfilled it by His death, HE became our Sabbath rest. He is Sabbath.

Abba is now found in the NT to describe our new relationship to God; as a daddy who loves us instead of a harsh judge who condemns us. JESUS made that possible. It's not about a DAY it's about JESUS!

ABBA has some fine songs, for sure.

I love the possibility of calling my God 'Abba'... 'Daddy'.

Isn't it just nice? It's like the calling from a little boy to his father... And that's what, I think, God simply want us: that we walk with Him in the way that a little boy can do, holding his daddy's hand and adoring him... Innocently, utterly sure that his daddy knows everything and is the strongest person in the universe.

Simply put, his daddy is his hero!

Now, the idea of the connection between 'abba' and 'sabbath' is simply ludicrous. Besides, as far as I know it only work in english: in spanish 'sabbath' is 'sabado'... So, there you go, one less 'b'... What do we do now with it?

When I pray in the morning I feel like I am running to my Daddy to tell Him what I would like to do that day and ask his advice. I like that-ABBA-Daddy. It works for me.
This sabbath/abba would not work in French either.

Mamma Mia! I opened this thread anticipating some revelation about the Sabbath being found in the song lyrics of ABBA! Tells you how far I've come away from Adventism! Their theology is becoming ancient history to me. Thank goodness!
In the words of ABBA here's to you SDA church:

So long, see you honey
You cant buy me with your money
Chasing, dazing, driving me crazy
But Ill never be your girl
So long, see you honey
You cant buy me with your money
You know its not worth trying
So long, so long, so long

Oh come on honey, back to our shack’
We’ll scare you to death, you’ll never go back!’

We’ll stuff you with Tofurky and get you perky’
You’ll be white as a sheet, if you never eat meat!’

Oh, come on now, was it all that bad?’
To see kinsman and neighbor, looking so sad?

We’ll fill your life, with uncertiantee’
We’ll even let you dangle, while others swim free’

We’ll give you three angels, the gospel we’ll strangle!
And with the evangels, you’ll surely tangle.

Oh, come back honey, said the Adventist Three’
Which would you rather have?
Jesus and freedom or ME!
